Man, machines and the
mammoth Himalayas
Shimla, October 9 Addressing a press conference here today, Manjeev Bhalla from the Himalayan Motorsports Association (HMA) said the rally would span across six days covering 2,000 km through some of the most gruelling stretches and undulating terrains in western Himalayas. SK Sehgal, chief general manager, SBI and Amit Saurabh, manager, Motorsports, Maruti India, were also present. The SBI and Maruti are the sponsors. “This time we have the highest participation with 166 teams, 275 competitors, 11 women participants, teams from the Army and the Air Force also,” Bhalla said. The event will conclude in Manali on October 16 after having traversed through some of the most inhospitable terrains like Kaza (3600 m), Tabo (3,050 m), Patseo (4,830 m) and Sarchu (4,551 m). “Even though foreign participation is restricted to only Austria, that too, only in the two-wheeler category but we are confident that there will be more global participants as motor sports have become a rage, especially among youngsters,” Bhalla said. There are three categories i.e. X-treme, Adventure Trail and Bikes X-treme. Last year’s champion Major Amarinder Brar in his Maruti Suzuki Gypsy will compete again with Suresh Rana, a veteran of five events, and Ashish Moudghil, a regular since 2006. He, however, regretted that besides Maruti, no other companies had evinced an interest in making their vehicles enter the event. Bhalla said all safety measures had been put in place with nine ambulances, of which four equipped with life-saving equipment. |

People fight ruling party to save tree
Shimla, October 9 However, it was sensitivity and vigilance exhibited by residents of Strawberry Hill which saved a massive deodar tree from being cut this morning. Interestingly, the permission for felling of the tree was obtained from Additional Chief Secretary (Forest) through a letter dated July 23, 2010, which stated that the tree was dangerous and could be felled after a payment of Rs 6,000 as sanction and plantation fee. Notwithstanding a complete ban on felling of green trees in Shimla, the incident clearly reflects that if you are well connected, it is easy to bend the laws. Timely alarm raised by Atul Jhingan, a lawyer, saved the tree as he brought the matter to the notice of the Chief Justice of the High Court as well as the Principal Chief Conservator, Forest. “I was shocked when I saw people cutting a healthy deodar tree on a plot close to my flat. To my utter disbelief, they had the valid permission which is truly baffling,” he said. He intends filing a petition in court on the issue of misuse of power by the Tree Authority Committee. The plot is in the name of Anjula Khajuria, wife of Ajay Jangi, a local BJP leader. When contacted, Ajay maintained that he had proper permission from the committee as the said tree was slightly tilted which could have posed a threat to adjoining houses. Even though it was just one deodar tree but since it had branched off into three trunks right from the base, it appeared as if there were three trees. By the time the locals got together, one of the trunks was already pulled down. |
