Batala
One held with 1 kg narcotics powder:
The Batala police has arrested one person and seized 1 kg of narcotics powder from his possession. SSP Gurdeep Singh said the Civil Lines police arrested Tarun Malhotra of Chakri Bazaar and seized 1 kg of narcotics powder from him and registered a case under sections 22, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act.

FATEHGARH SAHIB
No paddy harvesting at night: DC Yashvir Mahajan has ordered to register cases against farmers using machines to harvest paddy between 6 pm and 10 am. According to sources, the paddy harvested at night contained high moisture content and farmers failed to sell it in the market. The order came after a meeting with district managers of procuring agencies, secretaries of market committee, millers’ associations and arhtiya’s of the district.

Shortage of PhD seats:
The UGC guidelines directing only eight students to be enrolled under one guide as compared to the previous 10 has led to shortage of seats for PhD programmes. Dr Chandan Singh, Dean, Research, said, “The authorities are interested in accommodating maximum number of research scholars, but the current focus is to finalise the syllabus. The number of vacant seats will be ascertained once the admission process is over.”

Demand to allow Bar exam in Punjabi: The Sikh Students Federation (SSF) has demanded that law graduates should be allowed to take the All-India Bar Examination in Punjabi. The test is scheduled for December 5. SSF president Paramjit Singh Gazi said, “The work in lower courts and state offices is conducted in Punjabi. Moreover, Punjabi University is imparting legal education in Punjabi since 1960s. Hence, the decision to allow Bar test only in English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali, Oriya, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada needs to be reviewed.”

SSP bereaved:
Sanjeevan Kaur Aulakh, former Chief Commissioner (North Zone), and mother of Chandigarh SSP Naunihal Singh, passed away following a cardiac arrest this evening. Sanjeevan Kaur (65) was admitted in the emergency ward of the PGI after she had complained of chest pain. She is survived by two sons, SSP Naunihal Singh and Roopwant Singh, IAS, Gujarat Cadre.The cremation will take place at 4 pm at cremation ground, Sector 25, tomorrow.

Prisoner escapes from police custody:
A prisoner, undergoing 10-year sentence, escaped from the Civil Hospital, where he was brought for check-up here on Saturday. Taslim, who was convicted in a robbery case, was taken to the hospital along with 13 other prisoners. He was escorted by ASI Sushil Kumar, but he managed to escape. Taslim was arrested from JJ Colony in Delhi for looting cash and valuables from the house of Jasbir Singh Gulathi, Director-cum-Principal, Harkishan Public Schools, in 2008.
