India aim to go one up
Visakhapatnam, October 19 Known for their fighting spirit, Australia have won every one-day series in India since 1998 and the pressure will clearly be on Michael Clarke who had a lean Test series that added fuel to criticism against him. Clarke will lead a side light on experience after regular skipper Ricky Ponting, all-rounder Shane Watson and pacer Mitchell Johnson were rested from the series, while the fast bowling stocks were further thinned by injuries to Shaun Tait, Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle among others. For Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men, it is all about carrying on the momentum on a ground where India have won all the two matches they have played.
It was at the same venue that Dhoni had announced his arrival on the big stage with a 123-ball 148 against Pakistan in what was his fifth ODI on April 5, 2005. Playing hard and true, unlike typical Indian wickets, the Vizag strip saw a total of 654 runs scored with India winning comfortably. India followed it with a win over Sri Lanka in the second ODI that the stadium hosted on February 17, 2007. Dhoni did not get a chance to bat then as Yuvraj Singh guided the team home and the Team India skipper would look for another big knock when the match is played here tomorrow for the first time under lights. Bright and sunny weather here means that the cricket starved crowd of the coastal city in Andhra Pradesh will witness an international match after about four years. The team has been bolstered by the return Yuvraj Singh, who was dropped for the Asia Cup. The stylish Punjab batsman will look to find his rhythm at the same venue where he had scored an unbeaten 95 in India's win over Sri Lanka. In the absence of regular openers, the in-form Murali Vijay will start the proceedings with Shikhar Dhawan looking to don Team India colours as well. The line-up may also mark the debut of explosive rookie batsman Saurabh Tiwary who played for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. — PTI |

The Punjab Sports Department which claims to honour its outstanding players ignored archer Gagandeep Kaur today who won bronze medal in CWG during the festival today. Gagandeep Kaur who was invited to be honoured during the function was asked to get up from the sofa and was not even provided a suitable seat. Though Gagandeep Kaur refused to comment stating that the issue should not be given much hype, the disrespect shown to the archer was uncalled for. Also, the prize money announced by the state to various sportspersons earlier has been pending for a very long time. The government should give timely aid to sportspersons so that players get motivated to play and should also provide them with jobs. |
‘Crowd during CWG was abusive’
Karachi, October 19 }The Pakistan Hockey Federation and national captain Zeeshan Ashraf feel one reason for the team's poor Commonwealth Games performance was the crowd behaviour in Delhi which has become "abusive" after the Mumbai terror attacks. PHF secretary Asif Bajwa said the feedback he had got from the team was that the players were subjected to more abuse and insults then they were used to facing by Indian spectators before the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008. "It is now more difficult for our players when they play in India and there is more pressure on them because of the treatment they get from the spectators," he said. Bajwa was manager of the Pakistan team that finished 12th in the World Cup held in New Delhi earlier this year and was removed from the manager's post as a result of the poor show. In the Commonwealth Games, Pakistan finished sixth in the hockey event. Bajwa said players had told him about the pressures they faced in the Commonwealth Games because of the crowd behaviour. "It is disappointing for this to happen. I am not making excuses for our team losing to India but there is greater pressure on them now," he added. Ashraf said the players came in for some "strong insults and at times even abusive language when they played in the Commonwealth Games." "It was a bit too much for the players the way the spectators kept away at us and reminding us we were Pakistanis," he said. "Certainly it seems after the Mumbai incident the spectators try to make life difficult for us whenever we play in India. It happened to us throughout the Commonwealth Games which is unfortunate because sports is sports," Ashraf said. Pakistan were beaten by India in both the World Cup and Commonwealth Games. Ashraf, however, maintained that his team didn't play badly in the Games. "We fought hard against champions Australia losing by just one goal and if you see India lost to them by eight goals. I am sure in the Asian Games our players will give a much more improved performance," he said. Next Year's Champions Trophy hockey is also planned in India with the FIH agreeing to give wild card entries to Pakistan and India for the competition. — PTI |
Manchester, October 19 "I had a meeting with him. He intimated to me in his own way that he wanted to leave," Ferguson said at a dramatic press conference ahead of United's Champions League tie with Turkish side Bursaspor tomorrow. Speculation about Rooney's future had raged for days after Ferguson dropped the 24-year-old England international for last Saturday's Premier League clash with West Bromwich Albion. It came after Rooney publicly contradicted Ferguson's claims that he was suffering from an ankle injury by telling reporters he was fully fit. Ferguson finally broke his silence on the saga at an extraordinary press briefing here today, confirming that Rooney had requested to leave Old Trafford but denying any argument with the player. A clearly shellshocked Ferguson said he had first been made aware of Rooney's desire to leave before the start of the new season, when informed by United chief executive David Gill. "It was a shock. I couldn't believe it," said Ferguson. "In early discussions - in March I think - we had discussions with him, he intimated he wanted to stay, that he wanted a life contract with the club, that he was at the best club in the world. "It was terribly disappointing to get the news. We couldn't understand it." "We have to keep the door open because he is such a good player," Ferguson said, admitting he was baffled by the stance of Rooney, who he signed as a teenager from Everton in 2004. "We have done nothing but help him since he came to this club, that is why this is such a mystery to us. We've helped him with his private life and other matters," Ferguson said. "So we're as bemused as anyone can be because we can't understand why he would want to leave a club that is successful as we are in British football." Media reports had said Rooney and Ferguson had fallen out after the publication of lurid tabloid reports about the player's private life, with Rooney complaining about a perceived lack of support from Ferguson. With Rooney having only 18 months left on his existing contract, United will now likely be forced to sell their prized asset, valued at 50 million pounds, in order to recoup as high a price as possible for the player. Manchester United's cross-town rivals Manchester City have emerged as the favourite to land Rooney, with the player's wife reportedly reluctant to entertain a move overseas. The Guardian said any move by Rooney to Eastlands would represent the "most rancorous and staggering transfer of modern times." The newspaper reported City would do everything they could to land the player, noting that City's administrator Brian Marwood has a long-standing association with Rooney's agent, Paul Stretford. "We hadn't discussed signing Rooney until the last week because we never thought he would be available, just like we have never discussed signing Lionel Messi from Barcelona," a senior Manchester City figure told the paper. A move to Manchester City would likely see Rooney become the highest paid player in English football, more than doubling his current salary of 90,000 pounds per week to as much as 250,000 pounds per week. — AFP |
London, October 19 "And also if Rooney is on the market, not only Chelsea would be interested, but a lot of other teams as well," he added. According to reports, Rooney has told his employers that he will not sign a new contract and would prefer them to let him leave when the transfer window reopens in January. The troubled striker is believed to have complained that his relationship with Ferguson has completely disintegrated. The problems between coach and player had begun after lurid details of Rooney's marital infidelities with prostitutes went public. The scandal has had a negative effect on the 24 year-old, who has scored just one goal this season and has been getting less and less playing time. Rooney was left out of the starting eleven against Valencia and Sunderland, and was also omitted from Saturday's 2-2 against West Brom. Rooney has 18 months left on his contract, and the club may have to sell or risk losing him for nothing. — ANI But all in Wayne?
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has reportedly told his team-mates that he will consider a move to Manchester City. Rooney is considering his options after informing bosses at Old Trafford that he would not be extending his current contract. According to the Daily Mail, Rooney has become so fed up with life at United that he has told team-mates that he would not baulk at a move to City. It is also believed that the striker is keen to force the issue before the January transfer window. The former Everton player, whose current deal expires in June 2012, is understood to be angling for a pay hike to 200,000 pounds a week. The amount would make him the highest paid player in the Premier League. Meanwhile, United's players believe that Rooney's row is purely about money not about the breakdown of his relationship with manager Sir Alex Ferguson. — ANI |
Not an attack on Ponting: Warne
Melbourne, October 19 "I find it staggering, but not surprising, how much factually incorrect rubbish I've read since I was quietly sitting on my couch last week talking out loud to the TV and answering my followers on twitter. I don't know why so many people feel the need to exaggerate and sensationalise one sentence. Please, just report the facts," Warne wrote on his website. "My tweet about Ricky's fields for Nathan Hauritz for 2 overs has been portrayed as a rift between myself and the Australian captain and Journo's have tried to start a slanging match between us; what rubbish," he said. — PTI |
Force India look for points at Korean circuit
Yeongam, October 19 "We were disappointed by the Japanese event. We didn't make the most of qualifying and we had a double retirement in the race. We've got some work to do to maintain our advantage in the constructors' championship," said chairman and team principal Mallya. "We've put a lot of effort into Korean Grand Prix. We've got some changes to front wing and a small mechanical update that we didn't use in Suzuka because of the weather. We are also looking at introducing some new aero tweaks to strengthen performance, but of course we want to make sure any effort is targeted and will give a genuine improvement," he said. "It's a new track ... a big challenge. We've tried to gather us much information on both the facility and the area in advance to make it as smooth as possible. Both drivers have been in the simulator to learn the layout and the team will fly out earlier than usual to get used to the area, the track," he added. Sutil said, "I drove the Yeongam circuit on the simulator earlier this week to get a head start. It looks as though it is a good circuit with plenty of interesting corners and sections that could provide some overtaking opportunities. I would say, overall it's a medium speed circuit," he said. "We've got to do better in qualifying this race and then of course finish. It was a disappointment not to get to the end (in Japan) as the car has been reliable this year, but it just makes me more determined to get points this time out, both for myself and for the team," said Sutil. Liuzzi is looking ahead for a finish at the new circuit after two very short races in Singapore and Japan. "I now can't wait to get out there in Korea to get a proper race. There was nothing I could do about the outcome of my Japanese Grand Prix. I had had a really good start and I was already past five or six cars as I went into the first corner, but then suddenly I saw Massa coming across the circuit at me like a rocket. The real shame is that at that point I was in a brilliant position for the race and we could have scored some very good points," he said. — PTI |
