Virat show by Kohli
Visakhapatnam, October 20 Chasing a stiff target of 290, the young Kohli made full use of the opportunity to notch up his third ODI century, while Suresh Raina (71 n.o. off 47 balls) provided the finishing spark as the hosts romped home with seven balls to spare and took an unassailable 1-0 lead in the three-match series. First match of the series was washed out without a single ball being bowled in Kochi. The Australians were well served by their captain Michael Clarke, who signalled his return to form with an unbeaten 111, while Cameron White (89 n.o.) and Michael Hussey (69) were the other notable performers for the depleted visitors. But their efforts turned out to be for a lost cause as the Indians capitalised on a good batting track at ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium to clinch the game and marked Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 50th match as captain. Both the teams now travel to Margao for the third and final match on October 24. Replying to the target, India had a wobbly start when both the openers were dismissed early by Clint McKay. Debutant Shikhar Dhawan had a forgettable outing as the southpaw was dismissed for a duck in the very second ball he faced. In-form Murali Vijay (15) looked good before edging one to the wicketkeeper Paine to leave India reeling for 35 for two with McKay taking both the wickets. But Yuvraj Singh (58 off 87 balls) and Kohli (11X4, 1x6) kept India's hopes alive as the duo repaired the damage in a style similar to that of Clarke and Hussey for the Aussies. Yuvraj, who made a return to the side after being overlooked for the Test series, also looked good as he helped Kohli in setting the tone. The stylish Punjab batsman survived some anxious moments but went on to score his half-century and appeared to be a relieved man. Kohli developed cramps but the Delhi youngster maintained his run flow aided by Shikhar Dhawan as his runner. Yuvraj, meanwhile, departed for after being deceived by a McKay slower as the third wicket stand yielded 137. Raina, who cracked nine fours and a six, played a crucial knock after Yuvraj's departure as he took the pressure off Kohli with some big hits all over the ground. The duo added 84 runs for the fourth wicket to take India closer home before Kohli departed for his best one-day score. There was a little drama in store after Kohli's dismissal with skipper Dhoni (0) departing in quick succession but Raina ensured that India did not falter. Raina, along with another debutant Saurabh Tiwary (12 n.o.), clinched the issue to keep an all-win record intact from three ODIs at the scenic venue in the coastal city. — PTI Cameron White's innings was unbelievable, I thought 290 was enough but India chased well. John Hastings did a fantastic job, Starc has a bright future for Australia. We'll try to rebuild. Disappointed with the result. We'll try to do better in the first 15 overs in the second game — Michael Clarke Yuvraj and Kohli got us back in the game and Raina supported well in the end. We wanted to see how much dew was around, I thought the spinners would get more turn but it turned out to be much flatter. — MS Dhoni Cameron White's innings was unbelievable, I thought 290 was enough but India chased well. Man for rough times!
Chandigarh, October 20 For Kalka boy Ashish Moudghil, winning at the Raid de Himalaya has become just that… a habit that he is adamant not to let go off! Ashish won the biker’s category of the event for the 5 th time in the last six years. Ashish spoke to The Tribune about the challenge of the terrain, foreign participants, his own Yamaha WR 450 bike and future plans! Q: This is your fifth win in six years. It really looks like you now own the bike category at the raid? A: This year’s Raid de Himalaya saw a drastic and record breaking increment in the number of participants a total of 54 bikers and 44 four-wheelers. The best thing to see was that last year there were only 2 foreign bikes whereas this year 13 foreign bikes participated. In the history of Raid de Himalaya this was the first time that anybody won the overall prize in the extreme biker’s category for the fourth time in a row. This year my lead over the KTM 450 was 1hour 49 min 18 secs; the highest ever recorded. This year for the first time a biker made faster time than a 4x4 Gypsy and claimed the first flag-off in the Raid de Himalaya. I was 9 min 47sec faster than the 4x4 Gypsy. Q: But what is the reason behind your unrelenting success here? A: Well, I can’t think of a better reason than the backing by right people. I was trained by Red Rooster Racing, Bangalore. They provided me a new bike - Yamaha WR 450 - which is the most powerful bike I have come across producing 60 BHP. I have to thank MD of Red Rooster Racing Mr Dinesh. He was the only one to believe that I could perform on bikes, which can produce more than 60BHP. Q: With increased foreign participation this year, you must have faced a different set of problems. Can you elaborate? A: The Indian bikes had to struggle the hardest, to make it to the overall podium due to the high number of foreign bikes as prize money is only for the overall positions. With presence of foreign bikes it was next to impossible that an Indian bike gets an overall position and win the prize money, as there is no comparison. Q: What are your plans ahead? You really would be thinking about bigger things and events now? A: My plan for the near future is to train and prepare for the foreign events, the targeted events are Australasian Safari (3000km), Baja500 (800km), Baja1000 (1600km), Redbullromaniacs and finally DAKAR (13000km). |
