Recovery of pistol in jail busts cops’ iron rod hoax
Amritsar, October 15 How the pistol came in the jail is a matter that will have to be investigated by a probe team to be led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Amritsar. Yesterday, inmate Navtej Singh, an accused in the murder case of Nihang chief Ajit Singh Poohla, claimed that he was shot at by a miscreant on the jail premises at about 6 pm when he was exercising in the open area. He claimed that a person from the check post side, with his face covered, fired a shot at him with a pistol which struck his shoulder. On the other hand, the jail authorities maintained that Navtej himself had used an iron rod to injure his left shoulder and no such firing incident took place. Navtej Singh has been admitted in the Civil Hospital and doctors attending on him confirmed that the gunshot had pierced through the upper most part of his shoulder, yet he was stated to be out of danger. However, on the basis of the statement made by Navtej, the cantonment police has registered a case against unidentified persons under section 302 of the IPC. Another startling fact which came to light today was that Deputy Superintendent of Jail Balbir Singh claimed that he had a threat from the jail inmate in question as he had old enmity with him which dated back to his preliminary trial in the Poohla case. Superintendent of Jail G.S. Sandhu, while confirming this, said he had even approached the Director-General of Police about it and he was transferred to Jalandhar jail, but when he was shifted here back, we had again brought the matter to the notice of the DGP, but in vain. Investigating officer Vikram Singh said every minute detail of the incident would be scrutinised. “But due to his critical condition in the hospital, the investigation did not make any progress.” The Khalsa Action Committee and Dal Khalsa today met Navtej Singh in the hospital and sought a judicial inquiry into the incident. |
