Taiwanese papaya to grow in Majitha fields
Amritsar, October 11 The trial project was initiated in the land of progressive farmer Karamjit Singh, who agreed to the proposal of Pannu to take to papaya cultivation. Papaya is quick growing and starts bearing fruit within eight to 10 months of transplantation. Papaya is an ideal fruit for growing in kitchen garden as well as in orchard under protected conditions. It is a rich source of vitamins A and C, minerals and enzymes. However, the plant is prone to frost, therefore requires special care. Hence, use of polythene sheets has been advised to protest the crop. Although the PAU had recommended some varieties for cultivation in Punjab, yet its commercial cultivation has never happened because of various reasons. Pannu said he got the consumption pattern of papaya in Amritsar and found that about 2,000 MT of papaya fruit was sold in the fruit market of Amritsar every year and its consumption was growing annually by 10 per cent. The Deputy Commissioner involved the Horticulture Department and dispatched a horticulture development officer to visit Solapur to study planting material and its packages and practices thoroughly for its adoption in the district. He found that a Taiwanese variety called Red Lady is being grown on a large scale around Solapur district, Bijapur area of Karnataka and some areas of Tamil Nadu. This variety does not need plantation of 10 per cent male plants. An acre can have 900 plants. The plantation done in September-October starts bearing fruit in May and continues till December. After studying the traits of this variety, it has been decided to give a trial to it in the district on 11 acres of various progressive farmers. |
