Ministerial staff strike
Gurdaspur, October 6 The strike has had such an impact that government employees, including Deputy Commissioner (DC) Pirthi Chand, have not been paid their salaries for the month of September as the clerical staff is on strike and are not clearing any official files. Hundreds of striking employees pitched a tent outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office today and went on a chain hunger strike against the government indecisiveness in meeting their long-standing demands, which include an increase in salary and change of designation from clerk to office assistant and from senior assistant to assistant branch officer. There seems to be no respite for the common man tomorrow as the striking employees will be proceeding on mass casual leave. People visiting the offices of the Deputy Commissioner, Civil Surgeon, Excise and Taxation, Food and Civil Supply, Cooperative Department, District Education Office (Primary and Secondary), Punjab Roadways and the District Treasury Office had to come back empty handed as their were no clerical staff to deal with their problems. However, official work at the District Transport Office was not hit as the clerical staff there refused to strike work. Kanchan Kundal, a Project Manager at a local college, who went to the Civil Surgeon’s office to get some documents signed, returned empty handed. “This strike is due to dispute between the employees and bureaucracy, but the common man is being affected the most.” A defiant Ashok Sharma, press secretary of the union, claimed, “We will not end the strike till our demands are met. The government should understand that all our demands are genuine. We met the Chief Minister and top bureaucrats last December and we were assured that our salaries will be increased after six months. However, nine months down the line we have yet to hear from the government.” |
