Jalandhar, October 10
The anti-Sikh riot affected families declared to start fast unto death outside Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s house in Chandigarh from Tuesday to protest against the state government’s failure to disburse Centre’s grant and allot flats and booths during the past two decades.

Danga Peerit Welfare Society president Surjit Singh alleged that they felt cheated at the hands of Badal after supporting the Akalis for more than 25 years.

The Akalis used the victims of anti-Sikh riots against the Congress at every political stage, promising them rehabilitation, but these promises were never fulfilled.

Police lathicharge on protesting families in Ludhiana had reminded them of the riots.

The chief of the women wing of the society said the fast would continue till the Ludhiana DC was transferred, action against erring police officials was taken and their other demands fulfilled.

They said Parkash Singh Badal and his son Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal would not be allowed to use them as a tool to garner votes during the coming elections.

The society president said Dr Manmohan Singh-led UPA government’s grant of Rs 2 lakh per victim was allowed to lapse in the case of the 10,000 victim families of anti-Sikh riots.

The Centre had sent a grant of Rs 440 crore in 2006 to disburse Rs 2 lakh to each victim family, but grants of Rs 200 crore were lapsed as the state government failed to prepare red cards for the victims within the stipulated time, they alleged.

Though the Centre had extended the last date for the disbursement of ex gratia on the Punjab government’s request, the state again missed the deadline, he alleged.

The families demanded that the process to prepare red cards should be expedited. “We are open to idea of approaching Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to get these issues redressed,” they added.

Cong govt sitting on Land Acquisition Bill: Grewal
Our Correspondent

Phagwara, October 10
National secretary of the BJP Kisan Morcha Sukhminderpal Singh Grewal stated that the Congress government was purposefully sitting over the Land Acquisition Bill, 2007, to help their aides and capitalists acquire land of farmers in the garb of the SEZ Act, 2005, and industrialisation.

In a press release issued here today, Grewal said the UPA government had notified 360 special economic zones in India to facilitate industrialists to set up their units and provide employment, but most of these industrial units had not seen the light of the day as the mere aim of the capitalists was to acquire land of farmers at throwaway prices and create land banks.

It is a known fact that farmers across India had resisted these forced acquisitions and once thrown out of their lands, these landless farmers had become soft targets of anti-India movements like Naxalism.

Since the Land Acquisition Act, 1894, was not well equipped to protect the interests of the farming community, the Land Acquisition Bill, 2007, would be tabled in the winter session of parliament to provide much-awaited relief to farmers.

Grewal said fertile land shall be conserved like forest land and only barren and un-irrigated land would be acquired for public and private projects on lease. Farmers shall get monthly compensation not less than the interest on the land price while the ownership rights would remain with farmers.

Grewal stated the BJP had decided to lend its voice to the farming community and would stage protests within and outside Parliament to ensure that the proposed Land Acquisition Bill was tabled in Parliament.

Grewal said the Kisan Morcha had called upon the farmers across the country to agitate against the anti-farmer policies of the UPA government on October 11 at the district and state headquarters. Kisan Morcha president O.P. Dhankar would stage a dharna at Khuda Ali Sher, Chandigarh, on October 11, and submit a memorandum to the President of India through the Governor of Punjab.

CBSE to bring sportspersons under gradation policy

Jalandhar, October 10
To give a fillip to sports activities in CBSE-run schools, the Central Government has decided to bring tournaments organised exclusively for CBSE schools under the ambit of its sports gradation policy.

With the decision of the Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Welfare regarding introduction of grading system in such tournaments, sportspersons of over 7,000 CBSE schools across the country would be eligible to avail benefits during admissions in various higher education courses and government jobs.

However, only position holders at the state and national levels will be eligible to avail the benefits.

Until now, the players of CBSE-run schools had to participate in tournaments organised by the sports wing of the education departments of respective states to avail any gradation facility.

In the absence of any such policy for the past one and a half decade, the positions won by them in sports activities conducted by the CBSE did not fetch them any such additional benefits.

Talking to The Tribune, Pushkar Vohra, Assistant Education Officer (Sports), CBSE, New Delhi, confirmed that the decision in this regard had recently been taken and conveyed to the CBSE by the Ministry of Youth Welfare and Sports.

“We have disseminated the information to our regional offices and also to the various zones of the country where the zonal-level tournaments are being organised shortly,” said Vohra.

The CBSE has availed the facility of the grading system after 14 years, since the beginning of the CBSE school games in 1996.
