Jalandhar, October 21
The 135th Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan will be held from December 24 to 26 this year. This was announced at the general body meeting of the Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Mahasabha held here on Wednesday.

Unlike last year, the Harivallabh Sangeet pratiyogita this year would precede the festival being held from December 22 to 24.

Artistes like Pt Jasraj, Pt Rajan and Sajan Mishra, Pt Budhaditya Mukherjee, Pt Vishwanath Rao Ringe, Ahmed Abbas Khan, Yogesh Samsi, Kalpini Komkali and others would be part of the sammelan this year.

Talking to The Tribune, mahasabha general secretary Purninma Beri said, “We plan to give the festival a more global appeal.” She talked about the addition of artistes like Canada-based Ramneek Singh as a case in point.

The presence of duos like Sudhir Pande and Amrita Pande (tabla), cousins Salil Bhatt and Ankit Mohan (sitar and guitar) and Kaushiki Chakrobarty and her husband Partha Desikan (vocalists) would also be worth watching, she said.

Joint secretary Jyoti Mittu said, “The sammelan would start at 3 pm (first day), 4 pm (second day) and 2 pm (third day) so that late night schedules did not play a spoilsport for music lovers who can’t stay till late.”

About the much-delayed Harivallabh Institute, Beri said this year’s music competitions would positively be held at the institute.

Blaming the delay on lack of funds, she said Rs 87 lakh had been spent on the institute and work on the completion of the rest was on.

“The institute would have eight classes, one auditorium, one archive, a yoga room and a gallery,” she added.

Amritsar, October 21
Ravi Saini, who immolated himself allegedly after threat calls by some persons to vacate a prime property, today succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital where he was shifted late last evening.

Meanwhile, the police has booked former Mayor Sunil Datti and three others for abetting Ravi to commit suicide. A case under sections 306, 511 and 109 of the IPC has been registered against them at Rambagh police station on the statement of the deceased who had recorded his statement before the Duty Magistrate.

However, no arrest has been made so far.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Rahul S. said the family of the deceased had failed to produce evidence before the police.

He said the victim had claimed that around 15 years back, original owner Kirpala Singh had transferred the ownership rights of this 500 sq yard plot, located on Batala Road, to his father. He said the deceased had stated that the original documents of the disputed land were at their native place at Gorakhpur.

He said a police party, along with the family members, would be sent to bring those documents, after which further action would be initiated.
