Gurdaspur, October 20
The issue of locking the Singh Sabha Gurdwara at Kanhuwan on Sunday (when Manpreet Badal was allegedly not allowed to enter it) took a new turn when the Gurdwara Management Committee members claimed that it was a daily ritual to bolt the main gate from inside to prevent vehicle owners from using the gurdwara premises as a parking space.

This clarification comes after some Sikh organisations threatened to petition the SGPC over the matter which has snowballed into a major controversy in SAD circles.

Gurdial Singh, president of the Singh Sabha Management Committee, claimed that it was a daily ritual to close the gurdwara main gate from inside after 8 am.

He claimed that since the gurdwara was located in the main market, residents parked their vehicles on the premises of the gurdwara.

Gurdial Singh claimed that on Sunday morning, Manpreet Badal came totally unannounced. Had his supporters informed the committee members about his arrival, they would have made arrangements for him to pay obeisance at the gurdwara, he said.

He also claimed that in the first place there was no Sukhmani Sahib path being conducted in the gurdwara as was being claimed by Manpreet and his supporters. Manpreet Badal, as per his own assertions, wanted to take part in the path and later claimed that he was duly stopped from doing so.

“However, instead of making entry through the side door, Manpreet Badal chose to stand outside the gurdwara and it was from there that he called mediapersons to express his displeasure about the locking of the gurdwara.”

The Kanhuwan Assembly segment is represented by Public Relations Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan. Manpreet had claimed that it was on the insistence of Sekhwan that the committee members had prevented him from entering the gurdwara complex. Sekhwan was quick to counter Manpreet’s assertions by calling a press conference on Sunday in which he claimed that he had no role to play in Manpreet’s visit to Kanhuwan. In a statement here today, Sekhwan said, “An educated minister like Manpreet Badal should not have taken the people of the state for a ride.”

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and PPCC spokesperson Fatehjung Singh Bajwa demanded an inquiry into the incident and said the state government and SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar should tender an apology for “disallowing a devout Sikh from paying obeisance at the Sikh shrine.”

Irks contractors yet again
Tender issue: CE opens technical bid on Oct 18

Hoshiarpur, October 20
Resentment prevails among members of the Government Contractors Union (Irrigation), Hoshiarpur, against Chief Engineer of the Kandi canal Husan Lal Sura as he backed out from the promise regarding cancellation of a single tender meant for the cleaning and re-strengthening of the bed of the canal of stage I for an 18-km-long portion.

Union president Jhilmal Singh and general secretary Karnail Singh alleged here today that the CE called a single tender of Rs 8.70 crore for the work, for which a technical bid was due on October 18 and a financial bid on October 26, 2010, to favour a single contractor.

This adversely hit more than four dozens approved contractors of the department. On account of the terms and conditions of the tender, none of them was eligible to offer a bid. On October 16, all the contractors gheraoed the Chief Engineer on his arrival at the local Canal Rest House. After listening to them, the CE assured the contractors that tenders would be cancelled and fresh tenders would be floated later. Contractors demanded calling of fresh tenders for the entire work in slices as per past practice.

They alleged that despite postponement of the tenders till further orders, the CE opened the technical bid of the same on October 18, contrary to his orders.

They warned the CE asking him to call fresh tenders in slices so that marginal contractors could also compete and the work could be completed at the earliest so that the farmers of the Kandi area could get irrigation facility well in time.

Amritsar, October 20
A 20-year-old youth today attempted to immolate himself allegedly after going under depression due to threat calls made by some persons who forced him to vacate the land over which he built his house.

The victim, who has been identified as Ravi, a resident of an area located on the Batala road, received over 70 per cent of burn injuries.

The doctors attending on him at Guru Nanak Dev Hospital (GNDH) said his condition was critical.

The victim, a waiter by profession, in his statement before the Judicial Magistrate, stated that some politically influential people reportedly wanted to grab his house and he resorted to this extreme step after getting threat calls constantly from them.

Dr R.P.S. Boparai, Medical Superintendent, GNDH, said his condition was grave as the burn effects were in a large area of his body. “When the burns are on the prominent area of the body, survival chances get bleak.”

No case had been registered till the filing of this report. A-Division Ram Bagh police SHO Inspector Gurmej Singh said the investigation in the case was on. “We would be ascertaining the facts as stated by the victim who claimed that around 15 years back, the original owner had transferred the ownership rights of this 500 sq yard plot located on Batala road. We are investigating the matter and a case would be registered thereafter,” he said.
