Liquor baron raided:
Sleuths from the income tax department raided the business premises of a liquor baron in Faridkot, Ferozepur and Delhi on Thursday. The raids were also being conducted at the residence of the staff of the company and continued till late.

World Statistics Day observed
: The regional office of the National Sample Survey Office, located at Jaswant Nagar, observed the World Statistics Day yesterday. The event was marked by organising seminars and debates on socio-economic surveys undertaken by the survey office for the past 10 years.

Councillor Anita Dhir passes away: BJP councillor Anita Dhir (53) from Ward 19 passed away today following a prolonged illness. Suffering from cancer, she had been admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital, New Delhi, since past one month where she died today. Her body would be brought back home tomorrow morning. Anita was the first-time councillor. She is survived by her husband Satish Dhir, sons Nitin and Varun and daughter Pooja.

Two bodies found: Body of an unidentified man was found dumped in a gunny bag along railway crossing adjacent to DAV College this morning. Passersby noticed the body as stench emitting from it filled the air. The police said the assailants had dumped the body in the gunny bag after killing the man. Meanwhile, the Railway police has also found a body of an unidentified person from a railway line crossing at Nagra village. The Railway police has sent the body to the morgue at local Civil Hospital and initiated further investigations.

Buses collide, 2 injured:
Two persons were injured when a bus on its way to Delhi from Katra and a Haryana Roadways bus coming from the opposite direction collided head on near Toki village, 18 km from here, on the Pathankot-Jalandhar road on Wednesday. The injured, Sanjay Kumar and Sunder Singh, have been admitted to a nearby hospital.

Power shutdown
: Power supply to Chaheru, Madhopur, Khajurala, Ranipur, Barna, Palahi, Hoshiarpur Road, Palahi Road, Vishawkarma Nagar, Bhulari Road, Khurampur, Khatti, Chack Prema and Sangatpur would remain suspended on October 24 from 9.30 am to 4 pm, according to an official press release issued here today.

Guest faculty to get more
: The government has enhanced the remuneration of the teachers engaged on guest-faculty basis with effect from July 1, 2010. A spokesperson for the Director, School Education said the remuneration of JBT and drawing teachers had been increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000 per month and that of masters and language teachers (Hindi/Punjabi and Sanskrit) from Rs 11,000 to Rs 13,200. The remuneration of lecturers had been increased from Rs 13,500 to Rs 16,200.

Woman killed in mishap:
A 75-year-old woman was killed in a road mishap, as a Sumo hit her in Kanachak area today, the police said. Shanti Devi, a resident of Gurah Pattan village, was crossing the road, when the vehicle allegedly hit her. The police said the injured was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital where she died. Meanwhile, Sohan Lal, 20, who had consumed some poisonous substance at his house in the Domana area here yesterday, died in hospital here today.
