Chennai, October 25 Gambhir and Ishant, who had to sit out of the second and final Test against Australia at Bangalore because of injury, have recovered sufficiently to be named in the squad, which has no new faces. While upcoming batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has been retained, two other youngsters Abhinav Mukund and Jaidev Unadkat have been left out of the team announced by the BCCI after a meeting of the selection committee here. Out-of-form Yuvraj Singh again failed to find favour in the Test squad, with the selectors opting for Suresh Raina and Pujara as the middle-order batsmen, both of whom have done reasonably well when provided with the opportunity. The team, to be captained by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, has three fast bowlers in Zaheer Khan, S Sreesanth and Ishant and three specialist spinners comprising Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra and Pragyan Ojha. The Indian batting order looks formidable as it has stars like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman and Virender Sehwag, who have all been in fine nick in recent times. The return of Gambhir, who was laid low by a knee injury, means that opener Murali Vijay will have to sit out of the series commencing November 4 in Ahmadabad. "The team has performed extremely well against the Australians in both the Tests and One day series, particularly the Bangalore Test. Our junior players have gelled well in the middle-order with the seniors. Our bowlers have done a remarkable job. "Going by this, we have picked the team for all the three tests. I am confident that our players will continue their victory march," BCCI chief selector Kris Srikkanth told reporters here. — PTI |
Tendulkar in all-time Test World XI
Jack Hobbs, Len Hutton, Don Bradman, Sachin Tendulkar, Viv Richards, Garry Sobers, Adam Gilchrist, Malcolm Marshall, Shane Warne, Wasim Akram, Dennis Lillee. Second XI: Sunil Gavaskar, Barry Richards, George Headley, Brian Lara, Wally Hammond, Imran Khan, Alan Knott, Bill O'Reilly, Fred Trueman, Muralitharan, SF Barnes Readers’ XI: Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag, Don Bradman, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Garry Sobers, Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne, Wasim Akram, Muttiah Muralitharan, G McGrath.
New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar was the only current cricketer named in ESPNcricinfo's all-time Test World XI which did not include Australian captain Ricky Ponting and the likes of Brian Lara, Glenn McGrath, Sunil
Gavaskar.
Tendulkar has been chosen at number four batting position along with legends like Don Bradman, Vivian Richards, Garry Sobers and Shane Warne. Others in the World XI, dominated by Australians and West Indians, were Jack Hobbs, Len Hutton, Adam Gilchrist, Malcolm Marshall, Wasim Akram and Dennis Lillee. Gavaskar and Lara found themselves in the second World XI along with Barry Richards, George Headley, Wally Hammond, Imran Khan, Alan Knott, Bill O'Reilly, Fred Trueman, Muttiah Muralitharan and SF Barnes. Ponting was not in any of the two teams, the same as McGrath and India's world Cup winning captain Kapil Dev. The jury comprised one former captain from each of the top Test-playing teams -- Ian Chappell, Clive Lloyd, Tony Greig, Duleep Mendis, Ali Bacher, Intikhab Alam, John Wright, Ajit Wadekar -- and four cricket historians and writers. Warne, Gilchrist and Akram were the other players from the last two decades to make it to the XI, which featured seven players who made their debuts after 1970. Four Australians, three West Indians, two Englishmen, an Indian and a Pakistani make up the XI. Three players were unanimous choices, figuring in the first XIs of each of the 12 members of the jury (each juror was asked to pick a first XI and a second) -- Don Bradman, Garry Sobers and Shane Warne, each of whom got the maximum points possible in the exercise, 60. Tendulkar followed with 51 points. The biggest surprise the XI threw up was the gap between Warne and Muralitharan, the two leading wicket-takers in cricket history. Muralitharan made it to the World Second XI, tallying 34 points fewer than Warne. The closest battles were for one of the opening spots and for number five. Gavaskar lost out to Hobbs by one point and Headley by two to Richards. Hutton (47 points) partners Hobbs at the top. They are followed by Bradman, Tendulkar, Richards and Sobers. While there was no competition to Sobers for the all-rounder's spot, Imran (19) narrowly edged out Keith Miller to make it to the Second XI.

‘Won’t take Kiwis lightly’
Kolkata, October 25 "We should not think that we can beat New Zealand easily just because they have lost 0-4 to Bangladesh (in the recent ODI series). We have to stay focused," Harbhajan said on the sideline of a promotional event here. Harbhajan also said that now they were a confident bunch after their the Test and ODI series wins over Australia. "We are very high on confidence. We have done very well against the Aussies. We are really looking forward to the New Zealanders' challenge. If we play to our potential we can win the (three-Test and
five-ODI) series against New Zealand also," he said. Terming the result of Bangladesh-New Zealand series "shocking", Harbhajan said the country has improved their performance over the last couple of years. Dhoni, Bhajji bat for Raina
New Delhi, October 25 "I think it is baseless," was Dhoni's curt reply to reporters when they sought his reaction on the story published by a British daily which said that Raina was seen in Sri Lanka with a woman, who is a close associate of a known bookmaker. No new IBF contract for doctor
Patiala October 25 He has been replaced by Dr Sanyogita, who was attached with the women’s team despite the fact is that there are only three female boxers taking part in this championship whereas the number of male players is 10. It is pertinent to mention here that Dr Karanjeet joined Indian Boxing Federation in 2000 as member of medical commission. He is the one who had been targeted by few Indian pugilists before the Commonwealth Games stating that he was the one responsible for the non-recovery of their injuries. In fact, Arun had gone to the extent of stating that Karanjeet’s incompetence and negligence had cost him his career. For the last two years, since 2008, he remained with the Indian boxers as team consultant and his contract was supposed to end on October 31, 2010. Sources informed that despite the fact that he consented to continue with the team, his contract has not been renewed while the contracts of physiotherapist Hari Shankar has been extended. Even the visa for coach BI Fernandez has been extended. Dr Karanjeet when contacted in this regard chose to keep silent on the issue. He said it was association’s decision and he did not want to comment on this. But sources informed that the decision has been taken following a pressure from few influential players who were not at good terms with the doctor. He said, “It is much more than a professional problem now. Things have been bad since long. So much so that the internal conflicts have already been highlighted in all papers and both the parties are not ready to compromise.” |
AKC looks to speed up karting revolution
Chandigarh, October 25 And that karting is the basis of that ground work for Formula One, is probably so well known the world over that it almost classifies as a cliché. With this in mind, Amaron Karting Challenge is all set to launch its third season…bigger better and more comprehensive. Speaking about their plans for helping the sport find its feet in India, Mackinlay Barreto, head of Motor Sport, Amaron Pro Racing, feels the time is right, the spirit is good and the opportunity to pioneer a revolution is up for grabs! “There is a story about Lewis Hamilton that how he was accidentally discovered while playing with a remote controlled car, and a scout found his reactions very quick. If that can be the case, just imagine, what karting, which involves you getting in sync with the machine at a very early stage, do to hone a kid’s talent. It is almost like karting is the KG of Formula One’s school,” says Barreto, who is in the city to promote his company’s expanded karting challenge. Ask him if he thinks it will be an easy task, and with a smile he admits, “Well, not really. When you try to start something new, it always means that you have to put in that extra effort. But we are ready, with a plan and an execution model as well.” The AKC, which enters its third season this year, plans to target around a lakh school kids from over 300 schools, and this time they are all set to focus on northern India in a big way. |
‘Rooney decision massive boost to Man U’s chances’
London, October 25 "I think Wayne staying will boost them and make it harder for us. On the back of what has happened United will probably go and spend in January and at the end of the season," the Sun quoted Terry, as saying. Terry also thinks that Rooney's decision will make life difficult for the reigning Premier League champions "The fact that clubs haven't been buying because of what's happened financially in the world has maybe helped Chelsea in the last few years. Wazza staying is massive for them," Terry said. Rooney, who was previously on 90,000 pounds per week, is now understood to be earning a basic salary in excess of 150,000 pounds per week. The 25-year-old is now the highest-paid player at United, overtaking defender Rio Ferdinand. Wayne Rooney, Coleen fly to Dubai to celebrate £60m contract
London: Wayne Rooney has been advised by his Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to toast his 60 million pounds contract with wife Coleen away from the spotlight. The striker, 25, has been ordered to repair his marriage after the hooker claims, "recharge his batteries" and return mentally ready to win the Premier League title. Ferguson thinks it is the perfect tonic to get his talisman back on winning form. "Wayne and Coleen were planning a birthday party at home but Sir Alex suggested it might be good to get away," the Daily Star quoted a club source as saying. "The boss wants him to put all the drama of the past few weeks behind him, and come back and show us he's the best in the world," the source added. Fergie, 68, packed him off to the 1,200 pounds-a-night, seven star, Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai. He knew feelings are still running high after Roo doubled his weekly salary to nearly 200,000 pounds by threatening to walk out. The boss hopes the 20,000 pounds, four-day trip will protect his star from the death threats he received in the wake of his threat. The couple checked into a two-storey suite at the hotel complete with a butler and the use of a Rolls Royce limo. The complex is on its own island connected to the mainland by a private road. It has two of the world's finest restaurants, its own beach and a mall of boutiques.
