Manpreet didn’t understand how elected govts were run, says Sukhbir
Kanhuwan Chamb (Gurdaspur), October 23 He was accompanied by a dozen of his cabinet colleagues and members of the SGPC, including its chief Avtar Singh Makkar. Sukhbir for a major part of the speech remembered the sacrifices of the martyrs, before he went off in a tangent during the fag end of his discourse and resorted to Manpreet Badal bashing. Interestingly, every time he castigating the former Finance Minister, Sukhbir was careful to address him as “mera chotta veer”. He said Manpreet’s contention was that subsidies should be withdrawn and added that “how the poor and marginal farmers could survive without the state government giving them subsidies, including free power?” Making a sarcastic reference to his “mera chotta veer”, Sukhbir said, “The SAD is a 90-year-old party run on some principals. It is not the fiefdom of any particular individual and anybody who tries to belittle the party’s sanctity will have to leave it lock, stock and barrel. Manpreet is paying the price for being naïve and there was no place in any political party for individuals who were not well versed with the running of elected governments.” Earlier, Sukhbir Badal laid the foundation stone of a state-of-the-art monument to be built in memory of the martyrs of the Chotta Ghallughara (lesser holocaust). Nearly 10,000 Sikh warriors were slew on the orders of Mughal Cheftain Lakhpat Rai in 1746 after trapping them in a swampy forest near the present day
Kanhuwan Chamb. The function was held at , 2 kms away from where the Deputy Chief Minister laid the foundation stone of the monument. The memorial will come up in an area of 10 acres and will be constructed at a cost of Rs 10 crore by construction giant Larsen and Toubro (L&T). The original venue had to be shifted to the gurdwara hall as yesterday evening’s high velocity hailstorm flattened the makeshift pandal set up by the district administration. Local Bodies Minister Manoranjan Kalia, after paying tributes to the Ghallughara martyrs, indulged in Congress bashing. “It is only the SAD-BJP combine that has come out with plans to construct monuments in memory of Sikh martyrs. The Congress remained in power for so long but it never thought it prudent to remember Sikh martyrs. History will not forget what the Congress has done.” |

Poll in Bihar, labour pangs in Punjab
Jalandhar, October 23 Potato sowing season is on in the state but due to labour shortage, the sowing of potato has been hit in most parts of the Doaba and Malwa regions. Doaba is the largest producer of potato. Farmers in the Malwa region, especially in the Rampura phul belt, also
sow potato. “In the absence of adequate labour, we had to buy three potato planting machines, which cost us about Rs 2 lakh, ” said Harvinder Singh Hundal. He said these planting machines would be used only for 10 days and then these would remain out of use. He said three Bihari contractors had been working for his family for the past many years to arrange labour. “But this year only one contractor turned up with 10-12 labourers, whereas our demand was of 45 labourers daily to sow potatoes on 360 acres by this month-end, which is considered as the best period to sow potatoes,” he said. The labour has also jacked up its rates. “Earlier, they used to take Rs 450 to sow one acre but now they have increased the amount to Rs 600 per acre,” said Sukhjit Singh Bhatti, a potato grower. A group of 15 labourers can sow four-five acres in a day. “Owing to labour shortage, both sowing as well as the harvesting of potato is affected”, said Bhatti. The industry is also suffering because of labour shortage. “Our production has been severely hit due to labour crisis,” said a local exporter. |
