Regularisation Delayed
BEd teachers to observe September 5 as black day
Our Correspondent

Tarn Taran, September 2
The BEd Teachers Front, Punjab, has declared to observe Teachers’ Day as black day owing to the delaying policy of the state government in regularising their services.

The front represents as many as 14,000 teachers and education service providers appointed by the government on a minor fixed salary about three years back.

District president Sukhdev Raj Patti and state committee member Gurbax Singh Harike, in a joint press statement issued here today, said the state government had declared to regularise their services from September 2011, whereas the three-and-a-half-year term of their service would be over in March 2011.

The leaders said in the advertisement issued on their recruitment, the regularisation of their service was supposed to take place after a three-and-a-half-year term, which fell due in March 2011, but the government was taking six more months, violating the terms of the advertisement.

The leaders said in case the government did not accept their demands, the organisation would be forced to observe September 5 as black day and organise a state-level protest in Amritsar.

Make paramilitary forces accountable, says Valley professor
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, September 2
The postgraduate department of Doaba College, Jalandhar, organised a panel discussion “Kashmir problem: Genesis and solution” on the college campus yesterday. Eminent journalists of the region, academicians and students of journalism and mass communication participated in the discussion.

Initiating the discussion, Chander Mohan, Editor, Vir Pratap, said before talking about issues like propagation of education, trade and commerce, and freedom of ideas, it was important to restore peace in Kashmir.

“It is an irony that on one side, separatist leaders mislead the local populace by forcing them not to send their children to schools and colleges, on the other hand, they seek help from the Indian government to send their children to Malaysia and the USA for higher education,” he said.

Highlighting the rampant corruption in the troubled state, former Editor of Dainik Tribune Ashok Sharma said though the Central Government released a grant of Rs 1,00,000 crore for Kashmir, due to the prevalent corruption in the system, the grant did not reach the people which eventually led to unemployment and compromised development. Irwin Khanna, Editor, Uttam Hindu, said it was important to strengthen the bonds of cordiality between different communities in the state.

Prof Javed Ahmed Khan, who hails from Kashmir, said the people of Kashmir did not want to sever ties with India. “People want that the Army and paramilitary forces should be made accountable and atrocities committed on the local population stopped,” said Javed. Youths, who threw stones, only want employment, he added. He said incompetent political leadership was ruling the state.

People up in arms against wall near level crossing
Our Correspondent

Batala, September 2
Raising a wall near the level crossing to stall vehicular traffic and pedestrians under the newly built ROB on Dera Baba Nanak Road here has become a contentious issue. People, living on both sides of the crossing, have been on a dharna for the last 26 days to demand demolition of the wall so that people could cross to the other side of the railway crossing.

The Poor Urban Tenants Union has joined the residents in their protest. But the Railways and state authorities have not lend an ear to their demand.

Talking to mediapersons here yesterday, chairman Madan Lal and president Raghubir Randhawa of the Sangharsh Committee spoke vehemently against the state and the Central Government.

Randhawa alleged that before erecting the bridge, the necessary requirements were not taken into consideration.

Now people living on the Fatehgarh Churian road had to first walk 1.5 km on Dera Baba Nanak Road to ascend the bridge.

He said the people residing on either side of the crossing in Maan Nagar, Shukarpura and Faizpura areas were left with no option but to take to the ROB for every other thing. Even schoolchildren would have to go through this ordeal daily.

He said they were not against the bridge or development but were just demanding some minor amendments which could give relief to the people.
