Toll order: Travelling becomes more expensive

Travelling from the city to Amritsar and Jammu via Phillaur could take a heavy toll on
your pocket as the National Highways Authority of India
(NHAI) has increased the toll rates by 5-8 per cent. Earlier, the cost of passing through the toll plaza at Phillaur was Rs 82 for car (one way) and Rs 123 (both ways). For heavy vehicles, it was Rs 146 (one way) and Rs 218 (both ways). Now, people travelling by car will have to shell out Rs 85 (one way) and Rs 128 (both ways) and the heavy vehicles will be charged Rs 149 and Rs 223.

Govt drags its feet as illegal colonies mushroom

Even after making a public announcement for the regularisation of illegal colonies carved out in different parts of the state up to 2007, the Punjab government is still to issue a notification for the same.

Kids attempting theft thrashed brutally
Remained unconscious for half-an-hour

Shopkeepers beat up two children mercilessly after they were allegedly caught committing a theft at a mobile phone store located in Simlapuri here today morning. The boys - both minors - were thrashed so badly that they fell down unconscious.

Heavy rush witnessed in temples

Janmashtami was celebrated with full religious enthusiasm and zeal by residents of the city today.
All temples in the city were decorated with lights, flowers and rangoli. The idols of Radha-Krishna were decked up beautifully and tableaus depicting various stages of Krishna’s life were also displayed in each temple.

Traffic chaos worsens on Janmashtami

Commuters have become inured to being stuck in interminable traffic jams on the city’s major intersections but the huge rush on the streets on a festival only compounds their ordeal.
Owing to the poor road infrastructure hundreds of commuters going to temples on ‘Janmashtami’ today were had to remain inside their vehicles for hours.
