Religious Dispute
Phagwara/Rawalpindi, August 25 The protesters were up in arms against the inaction on the part of the police and administration over a religious dispute at Bhabhiana village, which took place on Sunday. The dispute arose when some villagers, including Nihangs, objected to holding of Akhand Path of Sukhmani Sahib on the premises of Baba Budh Das Smadh near a dera of Sant Nirmal Dass on Sunday. SHO City Amrik Singh Chahal and SHO Sadar Ravinder Singh said villager Rajinder Ghera, a Dalit, organised the path to commemorate the death anniversary of his mother. Few villagers attempted to stop the installation of Guru Granth Sahib on Smadh premises but the organiser remained adamant to continue the path, he added. The villagers exchanged heated arguments and even brandished naked swords at the venue. To bring the situation under control, the district police had to deploy additional security force in the village for over two days. It is learnt that they had informed the police about the incident. As no action was initiated even after the third day of the incident, Dalit activists were forced to block traffic. A delegation of the villagers today visited Phagwara SDM Amarjeet Paul demanding arrest of the suspects. Phagwara SDM Amarjeet Paul and SP Kamaljeet Singh Dhillon said a case under sections 295A, 511 and 506 of the IPC has been registered against three Bhabhiana villagers, identified as Buta Singh, Balbir Singh and Rana, and their six unidentified accomplices on the charges of hurting religious sentiments. Investigating officer Om Prakash said the suspects would be arrested only after investigating the issue properly. |
