Jalandhar, September 1
The city today witnessed 11 positive cases of dengue, besides eight other cases which have been declared positive by the authorities during last week.

With these cases, total 19 cases in Jalandhar have been confirmed by the health authorities. As per sources, the office of the Civil Surgeon today received intimation in this regard from the state authorities of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP).

It has been intimated in the letter that 18 patients in the city and peripheral localities who were found positive for the disease were undergoing treatment (17 at DMC, Ludhiana, and one at the PGI, Chandigarh). Another positive case is under observation at the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar.

Talking to The Tribune, District Health Officer Dr R.L. Bassan confirmed the cases.

Answering a query, Civil Surgeon Dr S.K. Gupta said as such cases were referred to these institutes directly by the local private hospitals, the district health authorities only got the report after confirmatory tests on these patients were conducted at the PGI and the DMC.

Sources also confirmed that, besides these cases, another 19 suspected cases were also undergoing treatment in various private hospitals in the city. With a large number of suspected cases, it is likely that the number of confirmed patients might increase in the coming days, said a health officer.

Jalandhar, September 1
Hope shines for Gagandeep, a daughter of a peon, as a charitable trust has come up for sponsoring all the expenses that would be incurred during her entire engineering course.

R.S. Gill of the Gilco Charitable Trust promised that the entire college expenses on her studies would be paid by the trust till she completes her engineering degree. He said he would also ensure that she got a suitable job after the completion of her course.

Gill also promised that he would provide her with a laptop or a desktop, according to her need, to ensure that she was able to do well in her studies.

“Our trust has sponsored the studies of quite a few poor, bright students earlier as well,” he added.

The story regarding the plight of the girl from a very humble background was published in Jalandhar Plus on September 1.

Gagandeep had taken admission in Rayat Bahra College, Hoshiarpur, believing that she would get a complete fee waiver under a scheme of the Punjab Government but the scheme has been a non-starter.

Her father is no more and her mother works as a peon in a factory at a paltry sum of Rs 2,000 per month.

Meanwhile, Gurpreet Singh of GTB Computer Education, Chhoti Baradari, said he was ready to offer all computer courses to Gagandeep free of cost at his centre.

The news regarding financial aid has come as a great respite for Gagandeep. “I was not able to concentrate. I think this would also alleviate pressure from the mind of my mother,” she gleamed.
