Abohar
Janmashtami celebrated in Polytechnic College
: Recitation of poems, singing of devotional songs and dances marked the Janmashtami celebrations at the Abohar Polytechnic College here on Wednesday. Chairman Sanjeev Midha was the chief guest while cashier Suresh Grover presided over the function. Principal OP Bhadoo, Nitin Thathai, Amandeep Kaur, Kewal Krishan and Pankaj Gupta spoke on the occasion.

Bishnoi Sabha chief elected: Ram Kumar Delu has been re-elected state president of the Akhil Bharatiya Jeev Raksha Bishnoi Sabha, informed Ramesh Bishnoi, national president of the organisation. Speaking at a meeting at the Bishnoi Mandir today, he said Rajinder Poonia and Sandeep Bishnoi will function as the vice-president and press secretary, respectively. Lokesh Godara will be the district president. Environmentalist Anil Dharnia who had recently been honoured by the Rajasthan government was also felicitated. 

Minor crushed to death: A Nursery student was crushed by a jeep as he fell down from it while returning home from Assumption Convent School here on Tuesday. School remained closed today to mourn the sad demise.

Tackling swine flu
: Under the school health programme, school teachers will be given training to check the menace of swine flu in the district. The training will be given under the Humanitarian Pandemic Preparedness Project of the Indian Red Cross Society. State coordinator of the project RP Verma said here on Wednesday that anganwari workers would also be trained and asked to report the suspected swine flu case to the district health authorities. Verma was here in connection with a programme “District simulation exercise and action plan on H1N1” organised by the state unit of the Indian Red Cross Society. The methodology of the treatment of A, B and C categories of swine flu was discussed at the programme.

Specially-abled kids: The Chaanan Association for Mentally Retarded Children, Jalandhar, and National Federation of Parents Association, Bangalore, are holding the first parents’ awareness meet of specially-abled children on September 8 at the Red Cross Deaf and Dumb School at 10.30 am. 

LIC foundation day: Celebrating its 54th foundation day, the Life Insurance Corporation of India, Bathinda, organised a function at its main office on the Bibiwala Road here on Wednesday. Senior branch manager SC Sharma said Rs 2.14 crore was deposited as premium on single day (August 31), which was a new record for the branch. An Insurance Week would be observed from September 1-7, he added.

21 GPS vehicles for police
: Three state-of-the-art police control rooms in Mohali, Ludhiana and Jalandhar will be fully operational soon. This was stated by state DGP PS Gill after flagging off 21 PCR Tavera SUVs, seven each for Mohali, Bathinda and Patiala. The DGP said the new PCR vehicles given to the districts aimed at upgrading the communication infrastructure of the Punjab Police to the world-class level. He said that these vehicles were fully equipped with the global positioning system and other emergency tools.

New deadline for Domoria ROB
: After December 2010, the new deadline for Domoria railway over bridge is April 2011. Officials of the Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar, and the Railways visited the site today. They discussed the issue of placing the pre-fabricated structures for joining the two spans of the bridge. Kulwinder Singh, Superintending Engineer (B&R), MC, and Balbir Singh, Deputy Chief Engineer, Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station, were among those who met in this regard. While announcing that the bridge could come to use by April next year, they said the girders would be placed in the next three to four months and the slab work would begin a month later.

New DCP: Arun Pal Singh took over as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) here today. The post had been lying vacant for the past over two months after P.K. Rai went to the Centre on deputation

Electrocuted
: Bihari migrant labourer Rakesh Kumar was electrocuted at Ghurrka village, near Goraya, yesterday. He was going to the fields on a bicycle and came in contact with live wires lying on the road. He was married only six months back. The body was sent to the Phillaur Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination. — OC

Suicide: A teenaged girl Shammi (name changed), a Class XI student, reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself with the ceiling in her house in Barapind, near Goraya, yesterday. Mental stress was said to be the cause of suicide, the police said. 

Teacher attacked: Three armed assailants attacked and wounded schoolteacher Raj Kumar near Cheema Kalan village in Phillaur subdivision last night. The injured was admitted in the local Civil Hospital in serious condition. The police has registered a case.

Swine flu toll 3 in Gurgaon
:Swine flu has claimed three lives in Gurgaon during the past one month. Sources in the Health Department today confirmed that Dharampal (41), a resident of Manesar, and Adesh Kumar (62) of Bareilly in Uttar Pradesh had died due to swine flu at a private hospital here.
Dharampal died at Artemis Hospital on August 24, while Adesh Kumar died at the same hospital on August 29. Earlier, another person of Kadarpur village in the district had died due to swine flu.
