Goel takes up cause of youth
New Delhi, April 5 Goel held a “Yuva Shakti Divas” rally in the Safdarjung Enclave area of his constituency today and alleged that UPA had rendered more than a crore youngsters jobless. “The UPA government is importing basic goods from other countries, which is taking a heavy toll on the indigenous workers and rendering crores of Indians unemployed,” said Goel. He said the NDA had alternative ways of generating jobs. “If we try to take information technology to the villages, it would automatically benefit the youth and also generate jobs. Similarly, lots of jobs could be generated out of tourism industry,” he said. BJP national leader Arun Jaitley said the UPA government has distorted the economic stability of the country. “When the Vajpayee government left, the Indian economy was booming and stable. Despite the Prime Minister being an economist himself and two other major economists in the central government, the UPA government destroyed the economic balance,” said Jaitley. He added, “Since the time the economic recession hit India, the UPA government has not taken a single step to minimise the damage.” Leader of opposition in Delhi VK Malhotra promised that if brought to power, the NDA would provide new houses to the poor. “Within five years, we would provide new houses in the JJ colonies and to the poor. Development of the country would itself generate employment,” said Malhotra. Delhi mayor Aarti Mehra also addressed the gathering. She asked the youth to elect Goel from New Delhi if they wanted Advani to become the prime minister of the country. “For a safer future, the political change is necessary. People should choose BJP to bring about that change,” she said. BJP leader Vijay Jolly also spoke on the occasion. |
Report Card: Meera Kawariya
(NW Delhi) Charu Singh Tribune News Service
New Delhi, April 5 Since this is a new constituency created after the delimitation, she as well as her opponent Krishna Tirath from the Congress are a little apprehensive. According to both of them, it takes a while to understand the constituency and the people. Meera has been a BJP national general secretary for the Mahila Morcha. She says, “Though I am fighting from the NW reserved constituency for the first time, I have been working here intensively for the development of the area over the past two years. This constituency comprises mostly unauthorised colonies, re-settlement colonies, villages and the posh locality of Rohini. I have been working on women’s empowerment and on spreading awareness in the areas of women’s education and health.” Kawariya has also been running a health awareness campaign. “Many women tend to ignore their own health concentrating only on family health, so we have been working on a ‘healthy woman, healthy family campaign.’” Sources inform that Kawariya’s NGOs have held health camps. She has also been working on ‘Balika Bruna Raksha’ campaign for the protection of the girl child. Kawariya claims, “I have been working in this constituency for two years and I am confident of wining.” Kawariya has been the BJP candidate from the Subhashnagar assembly constituency now in West Delhi. In Subhashnagar, she has worked towards primary school uplift. In her tenure as mayor she helped improve roads and basic amenities for the constituency. Currently she is the BJP’s Delhi Pradesh wing’s vice-president. Kawariya would like to work towards overall development in the constituency, she would like to focus specially on primary education and sports facilities in the constituency as she feels children in the constituency are particularly talented in sports. Kawariya informs that she would also like to help improve transport facilities and would like to legalisze unauthorised colonies. She also feels that colonies need a lot of work in getting simple basic amenities like better light, sewerage, water, education and health facilities. Caste is bound to play a decisive role in the coming polls in this reserved Jadav-dominated constituency. Krishna Tirath, the Congress candidate, could well give her some tough competition. |

RWAs back parents on fee hike
New Delhi April 5 “Private schools are already charging hefty school fee which includes administrative fee and establishment charges. I am paying about Rs 3,000 as monthly fee and Rs 1,000 as van fee. Big increase of Rs 800 per month will further hit my budget. These schools are supposed to run on no-profit basis, but they are levying exorbitant and unjustified fee,” said an agitated Varinder Arora, senate member, United Residents Joint Action (URJA), the apex body of RWAs in Delhi. Blaming the government for the problems that middle class parents are facing in educating their children, member of Vasant Kunj RWA, Amit Aggarwal said, “The Delhi government has totally failed in preventing the commercialization of education and exploitation of parents. The government seems to be unconcerned about the problems of a common man during these recessionary times.” “This matter will definitely make a dent in the Congress vote banks during the coming Lok Sabha elections,” he added. “The parents are already burdened with high inflation, job loss, recession and now the school fee hike. The Delhi government has allowed arbitrary school fee hike by issuing an official notification,” said Ram Vihar RWA member, V.N.Bali. Even the Delhi High Court has termed the fee hike “objectionable”, he added. Ritu Bhatia of Mahila Pargatisheel Association said, “We are deeply hurt by the school authorities who are openly violating the Delhi government set guidelines fleecing the parents, especially people from the lower middle class background.” She added, “Parents are being forced to buy uniforms, bags, geometry boxes and books from the stores which have links with the school management, which is unacceptable.” |

Childhood cancer linked to brain
New Delhi, April 5 And about 80% of childhood cancer is related to the brain. “The unacceptability factor that poses a hindrance in the growth of children suffering from cancer is a serious concern. The moment any school gets to know about the ailment of a particular child, it immediately puts many conditions on the child to continue studying in the school,” said Dr Rakesh
Jalali, neuro-oncologist from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, today here while launching the North chapter of Brain Tumor Foundation of India. To address the problem of cancer-affected children, a painting competition on the theme of “The Healing Touch: Developing Helping Hands” was organised in which 98 children participated, and the idea behind this was to inculcate the feeling of responsibility in young children, tomorrow’s citizens, towards lending a helping hand to the fellow children who are cancer-affected, informed Dr Mary Abraham, head of anaesthesia department of Fortis Hospital,
Noida. While emphasising attitudinal change to integrate patients suffering with neuro tumours back into society, Dr Rakesh underlined the recurring theme of prevention of cancer by early detection along with urging for sensitising people about the symptoms associated with the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system
tumours. Dr A. K. Banerjee, head of neuro surgery Apollo Hospital and formerly HoD of neuro surgery of
AIIMS, through his public awareness lecture on brain tumours, informed, “The symptoms of cerebral tumours are fits, vomiting, headache, memory loss, abnormal
behaviour, difficulty in walking etc. When diagnosed at early stages, both malignant and benign tumours can be cured. Of the total number of brain
tumours, 50 per cent can be cured and around 40 per cent of them have chances of reoccurring after a certain span of time, which in turn is dependent on the tumour characteristics and location.” Further, Dr Banerjee outlined that in case of malignant cancers, after surgery radiotherapy and chemotherapy might be required to eliminate the tumour from its root, whereas the benign tumours show good prognosis even after surgery. Generally, in our country cancers are detected at an advanced stage when treatment gets difficult so there is a need to disseminate the idea that ‘cancer is curable’ and on this line, a “Public Awareness
Programme” was flagged off along with a rendition of an animation film “Bust that
noma” and a skit “Brain Tumors are treatable” by children from
CanKids, which is an NGO dedicated towards helping children affected by cancer. |
