Cong fields Bhadana from Faridabad
Ravi S. Singh
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, April 4
The suspense over Congress’ candidate from Faridabad is over as the party has re-nominated sitting MP Avtar Singh Bhadana.

The other political parties had already waded into electioneering but their candidates could not focus on campaigns, as the Congress had not yet announced its candidate.

It must be mentioned that MLA and minister in Haryana government A.C. Chaudhary was also seeking ticket from Faridabad.

Meanwhile, Bhadana has expressed confidence that he would again be victorious.

He said his party had a strong cushion in the “progressive and gentle” image of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. The Congress government has carried out a lot of development works in Faridabad.

Senior leader of the youth wing of Haryana Congress Rakhi Sethi said youths and women in the state believed in Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. She added development would be the main election issue.

Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) which has declared former cricketer Chetan Sharma as its candidate from the area has intensified its campaign preparations.

BSP supremo and UP Chief Minister Mayawati will address a public meeting at Palwal on April 6. Haryana BSP general secretary Surajpal Ammu said the party’s campaigns would be in full swing after Mayawati’s public meeting.

However, Ammu informed Chetan Sharma had covered most villages and urban centres in Faridabad parliamentary constituency. With the Congress nominee now clear, the party would focus better, he added.

The BSP’s strategy in Faridabad is to project Mayawati as next Prime Minister. The party aimed at raising issues related to Faridabad only. The party will also highlight the way Congress and particularly Avtar Singh Bhadana neglected of Faridabad, he added.

The Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) (BL) has also started campaigning for its candidate Chander Bhatia. Party supremo Kuldip Bishnoi has addressed a series of public meetings.

With all major parties in form, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with the INLD has launched a mass mobilisation programme.

A senior BJP leader claimed it was easy for Ram Chander Bainda, party candidate from Faridabad, as the Congress had re-nominated Avtar Singh Bhadana.

Report Card: Vijender Gupta (Chandni Chowk)
First-time player, Gupta banks on local development
Himani Chandel
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 4
The BJP’s first time player for the Lok Sabha elections and MCD standing committee chairman, Vijender Gupta, is counting on his local developments in Chandni Chowk to get an edge over the Congress sitting MP from the constituency, Kapil Sibal.

The municipal representative’s election motto says ‘performance vs non-performance’ as he feels the area has been the most neglected in the Capital for the past five years. “It seems as if the area does not have any leader. The residents have to face so many problems, including poor sewerage and bad roads,” said Gupta.

He claimed that a majority of the works being showcased in the list of developments of the union minister for science and technology and Congress candidate from Chandni Chowk, Sibal, were actually the achievements of the corporation.

He said the much-hyped project of Jama Masjid Redevelopment Plan, the credit for which is being claimed by Sibal, is the brainwork of the MCD. “We have been pursuing the project for the past so many months, including efforts from the point of devising the plan to its sanctioning. Everybody knows the fact, especially the people,” he said. “It is a weird thing why such a big minister wants to grab the credit,” said Gupta.

However, the issues in the agenda of BJP’s first-time contender in the Lok Sabha polls are no different from the problems prevailing in the constituency for decades. Neither any politician nor the corporation has yet been able to address these issues.

Improvement of roads, improper sewerage, water shortage, water contamination, power cuts etc are the major things that residents have been struggling to fight with, in the absence of any political support.

“The 60 years of Independence have not seen any development in this area. It hardly matters who wins the seat, we know nothing is going to change as far the development is concerned,” said Imitiaz Khan, a trader and resident of the area. “Chandni Chowk is not only the commercial hub of Delhi but also a great tourist place. Despite that it has been ignored in terms of development and providing facilities to people,” said Mazhar Ali, a shopkeeper in Ballimaran.

The haphazardly entangled electric cables running along every street in the market have made this area prone to dangerous mishaps. The Delhi government had also released funds to make the cables underground but no action has been taken so far.

Wannabe MPs seek out feng shui for luck

New Delhi, April 4
“Do you have something for political luck? Something to help me get a ticket to contest?” That’s the oft-heard question these days as politicians and wannabe MPs, agonising over electoral prospects, throng feng shui shops hoping to woo lady luck.

“With feng shui, one can improve chances of getting more from life. You can arrange the environment in such a way that the balance falls in your favour. Many politicians are showing an interest in this and have come to me seeking advice,” said feng shui master Mohandeep.

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese system of aesthetics. It believes in using laws of astronomy (heaven’s luck) and the earth luck to improve life by charging positive qi, or physical energy.

It is conceptually similar to the Indian system of vaastu shastra. In India, there are many people who have studied feng shui and vaastu shastra. Now, politicians are turning to them for guidance.

Mohandeep’s clients include a host of big and small politicians.

“Many people from the Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) come to me. There are two or three people from the Congress also,” he said, adding that Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam, known for his stint on reality TV, is also among his regular clients.

“I look at their date of birth, floor plans of residence and office. Then give them advice so that their environment can be made positive — like how to position their table and chair or ensure they sit against a wall,” Mohandeep said.

Sitting with the back to an entrance or exit point could spell trouble for the person in his office or internal party conflicts, Mohandeep said.

At feng shui shops across the country, like the Kriti Collections at Khan Market in New Delhi, totems and artefacts for enhancing luck are flying off the racks.

“Since the elections were announced, we have had a lot of customers coming in and asking for ‘something’ to enhance their political luck or help them get a ticket to contest elections,” said Sharad Goyal, the owner of the shop.

Totems like the Ruyi stick for power and authority or the chesty-looking Quang-kong king statuettes, painted in bright red, gold and green colours and even the dragon-headed tortoise for fortune, power and support are a big hit, Goyal said.

Measures like placing a set of three, eight or nine miniature horses in the south corner or a crystal lotus to overcome obstacles or even an auspicious six-rod wind chime could do the trick, the experts said.

At many shops, a few customers skitter in inconspicuously, whisper to the patron in hushed voices. A few nods later, the customer is on his way with a brown bag tucked away under his arm.

“Often we have concerned family members or a politician’s aides who come to us seeking advice. This is because the person does not want to be seen in public...We tell them which article to get and tell them where they should keep it in their homes,” Goyal said.

“Keeping the objects in offices is also out of the question for those who want to be discreet. So, many use very small mobile charms that can be attached on to your phone or kept in your pocket or wear bands,” Goyal added.

These items are charged with Reki energy by a trained master and when placed in the right positions they work “with you” to facilitate your aspirations, he added.

Goyal claims to have given advice to many political aspirants.

“Many have achieved success and they come back to try again. It is all about harnessing the 33 per cent of what we call earth luck. The remaining is heaven’s luck and mankind luck, which are beyond the control of your immediate environment,” Goyal averred.

For those seeking further guidance, the experts can even advise them on what colour to wear or adopt in your campaign to make it successful with the masses or even which is the auspicious time to launch a campaign or rally.

While feng shui does not guarantee 100 per cent success, “it can improve the chances of getting more from life,” said Mohandeep. — IANS

New Delhi, April 4
Asserting its stand with the party candidate Varun Gandhi and his mother Maneka Gandhi, the Delhi BJP today staged a protest at Jantar Mantar on the issue of NSA being invoked against the young BJP leader.

BJP state secretary Ashish Sood said that the charges against Varun are unfair and he should be freed immediately otherwise the party may take up the protest on a national level.

“The detention of Varun is absolutely illegal. His mother is not allowed either to meet him. This is a political conspiracy against our party,” said Sood.

BJP leader Maneka Gandhi was on Friday not allowed to meet Varun Gandhi, the party’s Lok Sabha candidate from Pilibhit. Varun is in Etah jail facing charges under the National Security Act (NSA) following his alleged derogatory speeches against Muslims last month.

A senior BJP leader said that the Uttar Pradesh government must stop playing politics. “In the entire history of the state, such a step has never yielded any political success. The slapping of NSA on Varun and the attempt to murder charges are simply vindictive. If the charges are not withdrawn, the UP government will have to pay a heavy price,” he said.
