High drama at airport
New Delhi, March 31 Even before the Kolkata-bound an Air India flight could take off from Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) this morning, it was diverted to the starting point after a passenger on board suspected the behaviour of three fellow passengers and took them to be ‘unlawful elements’. The flight was delayed by two hours and could only take off only at 9 am. The Air India’s flight IC-401, with 104 passengers and cabin crew, was scheduled to take off for Kolkata at around 7 am. According to Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officials, the suspect passengers turned out to be employees of a security agency and were allowed to go on the flight after checking their credentials. “The plane had almost reached the take-off point, when a female passenger, an off-duty airhostess, become suspicious over the behaviour of her three fellow co-passengers and informed the cabin crew about it,” said a senior airlines official. According to information they were talking about terror situation in north-east India and the use of words like ‘guns’, ‘bombs’ & ‘killings’ which were overheard by the woman passenger . The airhostess informed the pilot, who decided to abort the take-off and asked the Air Traffic Control to allow him return to the parking bay from the take-off point. According to sources, the security forces on the ground were alerted. They surrounded the A-320 aircraft as soon as it reached the parking bay. “The CISF personnel and commandos boarded the air craft and took the three passengers for questioning. The surprised passengers showed their identity card which was cross checked by the officials and found that the three were clean. They were in fact security officials and were on their way to Imphal from a connecting flight they would catch from Kolkata,” confirmed a CISF official stationed at the airport. |
DDA scam: Goel questions Maken’s role
New Delhi, March 31 Calling Maken’s role suspicious in the scam, Goel accused the DDA of deviating from its main purpose of providing affordable houses to the people and alleged that the department fleeced people of Rs 800 crore. “Under the able guidance of the urban development minister, the DDA has become a big commercial builder. It is selling MIG flats for Rs 60 lakh and auctioning schools and residential plots,” said Goel. He added, “The move is beneficial only to the land mafias. DDA’s current policies have made the common man’s dream of owning a house or a shop almost impossible.” Goel also appealed to the 6,00,000 applicants of last year’s DDA flat scheme to write to the President of India to intervene on their behalf and help them get interest on their deposits. “The role of the union minister is suspicious. He is allowing the DDA to work in the interest of the mall lobby and the land mafias.” “Working in collusion with the Congress and the land mafias, the DDA is denying the general public a roof over its head. The DDA is claiming to have conducted an internal inquiry, but has not announced the findings of the inquiry. The Delhi police too had conducted an inquiry in this scam, however, somebody is sitting over the report, even the police officers involved in the inquiry were transferred,” he said. Goel also accused Maken of cheating the slum-dwellers. “On one hand, the Delhi government returned Rs 400 crore to the central government saying it has run out of land to construct houses for poor, but on the other hand, Maken inaugurated a plan to allot flats to jhuggi residents.” Welcoming the Delhi High court verdict that called the DDA officers “property dealers”, Goel demanded stringent action against the “corruption- ridden” agency. Moving on to the Congress government in Delhi, Goel, while talking to his supporters in Pusa Road recently, ridiculed the new traffic rules introduced by it. “If allowed to continue its current working style, the government will make sure that the average citizen of Delhi will live only to pay fines,” he said. He said that without acknowledging the ground reality that there were no parking spaces around the city, the government was planning to raise the fine for wrong parking to Rs 1,500. “Similarly, fixing the speed limit of 50 kilometer per hour within the city limits is illogical. If the new laws are implemented, private car drivers will have to shell out Rs 1,000 and commercial drivers Rs 2,000 for crossing the speed limit,” said Goel. |
Rs 77-lakh fraud by farmer
Greater Noida, March 31 According to Deepak Agrawal, district magistrate of Gautam Budh Nagar, when the administration realised the fraud, the farmer’s bank account was frozen and Rs 60 lakh was seized. However, by that time, the farmer, Harwant, had already withdrawn Rs 17 lakh from the account. The administration has issued a notice to the farmer for the recovery of Rs 17 lakh. The DM said that Harwant’s land in Tughalakpur is disputed. The Greater Noida Authority had acquired the land in 1997. The case pertaining to the ownership right of the land has been heard by SDM, district magistrate and even the commissioner of the zone. And they all had stayed the payment of compensation for this land to any of the claimants. However, it is being alleged that some people managed to replace the real file of the land from the ADM’s office record with a fake file, having names of new heirs. On March 3, the additional district magistrate, without knowing of the fraud, signed the duplicate file, issuing a compensation of Rs 77 lakh to one Sada Singh. When some farmers informed the ADM about the fraud, he in turn reported the matter to the district magistrate. The DM then immediately ordered freezing of the farmer’s bank account. Sada Singh has also been asked to deposit Rs 17 lakh in the government treasury at the earliest. |
Three toll plazas set up for revised fee
Gurgaon, March 31 For this purpose, three toll plazas have been erected on the project highway, one at the Delhi-Haryana border (24 km), second at the end of the project reach, i.e. at 42 km and one more toll plaza at the intersection of a loop leading to Indira Gandhi International Airport (International Terminal). A company spokesman while talking to The Tribune said that the passes for local commercial and personal traffic would be issued on monthly basis. The discounted rates for local personal traffic would be 50 per cent of the applicable fees for the specified category of vehicles and for local commercial traffic, it would be 66 per cent. The present volume of tollable vehicles on the stretch (three toll plazas) is close to 2,00,000 vehicles of which almost 40% are using the Smart Tag facility. “Today it’s commendable to state that through these series of initiatives, the waiting time at the toll plazas has been significantly reduced to less than five minutes in cash lanes,” he said and added, “We urge motorists to follow lane driving and adhere to the desired speed limits while driving on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway.” |

AIIMS pulled up for negligence in treating child
New Delhi, March 31 A bench headed by Chief Justice Ajit Prakash Shah expressed concern over patients not being treated properly due to ego clashes among different groups of doctors in the institute. The court’s observation came after it took cognizance of a letter from a mother of a month-old child, accusing AIIMS doctors of callousness in treating her child. In the letter, Rekha told the court that her baby was suffering from heart ailment and was admitted to the AIIMS under the supervision of A.K. Bisoi, a cardio-thoracic surgeon. However, the baby was neglected after Bisoi was suspended by the health minister on March 9, she alleged. “We are interested in saving the child. Tell us how you are going to do it. We are not concerned about internal disputes in the hospital,” the court said, adding, “patients are suffering because of internal fighting.” “Nobody should be victimised because of ego clashes,” it said while directing the hospital to file an affidavit and listed the matter on Wednesday.

45-year-old GK-I club bids adieu
New Delhi, March 31 The club stood on an MCD land and was leased to Lal Chand Public Charitable Trust. The land was further sub-leased to the club in 1965. The lease was to expire in 2015, but due to a lapse in the payment of the lease to the trust, the club has been closed. The members even protested against the closing down of the club on Monday. However, the trust claims it had approached the High Court on the issue and had won the case. The lease was terminated, but the members maintain they were not informed. “The management did not tell us anything about the issue. It was a bolt from the blue when we got to know the condition just a month ago. We do not know why the management failed to pay the quarterly rent. We had enough funds since each member paid Rs 75,000 as the membership fee and there are around 1,500 members. This is probably the outcome of the management’s irresponsible behaviour,’’ said an irritated member. Another member was quick to add, “We plan to file a special leave petition in the Supreme Court. We cannot allow this club to be shut down.” Meanwhile, a managing committee representative has denied the allegations. “AGM meetings were conducted and everything is on record. In fact, we cleared all dues of the lease. We plan to approach the Supreme Court on Tuesday,’’ said Naveen Bhandari, who was the general secretary but resigned recently. The building firm has refused to comment. The members who lived their life by participating in the activities of the club are agitated, the new members too feel cheated. Savitri from GK-I said, “I became a member of the club the previous year and now the club has been shut down. I feel cheated after paying a hefty membership fee.” Kishori Kapoor, who calls this club her maternal home, said, “Today is the last day. I remember the way I use to play rummy here everyday. This is hurting me.” |
