Cops assault women trying to save couple
The couple from different religions had eloped from Jammu
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 26
Over five to six women activists were injured in a fracas today morning when they tried to stop some J&K policemen from arresting a couple who had eloped from Jammu a few days ago. The injured include the chairperson of a women organisation.

The girl and the boy had eloped to the capital three days ago and are from different religions. They are staying under the protection of women organisations as they fear threat to their lives. The two claim to be adults and were married yesterday.

But when the J&K police came to know that the couple had been staying in the Qutub Enclave area of South Delhi, it reached there to arrest the couple.

When the women activists refused to hand over the couple, a fracas ensued and some of them were injured.

Mary John, member of a women organisation, said the police wanted to take custody of the couple and arrest the boy for eloping with a minor girl.

“However, the girl says she is 19 years old and the fact can be checked. They were married yesterday. But the police was not ready for any arguments and assaulted us. Many of us have been injured,” she said.

She added the police did not have any paper to prove that the girl is a minor.

It was only when the Delhi policemen reached the spot the matter was sorted.

Meanwhile, the Delhi police has assured the activists of full protection to the couple who would remain with them.

“The couple is in care of women organisations. No case has been filed against anyone,” said a Delhi police official.

DCW intervenes in rape case
Akhila Singh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 26
To save rape laws from dilution, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has intervened in a three-year-old rape case asking the local court not to provide bail to the accused on any ground.

The accused Momin had allegedly called Sunita (name changed), whom he considered his sister, to his house in Chilla Gaon and raped her.

However, two days ago, the victim supported the accused in his plea to get bail and decided to marry him.

“The victim had filed a rape case against the accused in Tandav Nagar and the case was heard in Karkardooma Court under Section 376 of the IPC. The DCW stood by the victim all the while and after identification, the accused was in jail for three years,” said Sunil Negi, DCW spokesperson.

The DCW claimed Sunita had decided to marry the accused under pressure.

“When DCW lawyer went to the court on March 24, we learnt that the victim had decided to marry to the accused and the accused had even applied for bail. Sunia had also converted into a Muslim,” said Negi.

The DCW decided not to support the victim.

“This could set a wrong precedent. The rape laws are stringent and they should remain like that. If the accused is dealt with leniency because he has decided to marry the victim, the law would become pointless. The DCW filed a petition against the grant of bail to the accused and the court upheld that in today’s judgement,” he said.

Goel woos morning walkers
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 26
Kickstarting his campaign for the Lok Sabha elections, BJP candidate from New Delhi Vijay Goel has been touring parks in his constituency.

Reflecting on the concerns of morning walkers in parks, he said voters wanted development. “Electricity, water and parking are the major problems in New Delhi. Most government colonies are plagued with such problems. I will develop New Delhi,” said Goel.

At a meeting of traders, Goel said, “I am against high conversion charges for commercial use of industrial areas. The Rs 8,000 per meter charge on the covered area is crushing traders during recession. If the centre continues with its policies, traders will be forced to reconsider options.”

Goel pointed out a trader pays huge amount to buy a shop and then is forced to pay conversion charges. “This reduces his status to that of a tenant of the government. The fee for trade license too has been raised from Rs 250 per year to Rs 5,000 per year.”

He said, “The BJP will ensure reduction in conversion charges in resettlement colonies. These colonies will be declared ‘special areas’. The market areas are facing parking problems despite having paid for parking area development. We will develop parking facilities near marketplaces.”

Report Card Sajjan Kumar (South Delhi)
Gave sewerage to villages, but ignored slum
Syed Ali Ahmed
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 26
Sajjan Kumar, the Jat leader of the Congress party in Delhi, has had to face various challenges in the Lok Sabha elections but has always managed to romp home victorious.

Sajjan Kumar said though he faced strong challenges, they would not affect him much as he had done a lot of work for the constituency. About 94 per cent of the total South Delhi constituency is from erstwhile Outer Delhi from where he has been MP several times.

He claimed that during his tenure he had worked for development of villages. When he was member of the Rural Development Board, he got passed a scheme for laying a sewer line in all villages of South Delhi.

Sajjan Kumar, three-time MP from Outer Delhi, claimed that out of total Rs 10 crore MP fund, he had spent Rs 9 crore for development work.

Besides, during finalisation of the Master Plan of Delhi, he intervened and got approved third and fourth floors. Earlier, there were no proper drainage system and street lights in rural areas, but he got these works done.

Sajjan Kumar started his political career in 1977 as councilor. He claimed that he played a major role in providing certificates to unauthorised colonies. Thereafter, concrete streets and drains were constructed.

In 1980, he contested the Lok Sabha byelection from Outer Delhi and defeated Chaudhary Brajam Prakash who was first Chief Minister of Delhi.

In 1985 he was not given ticket by the party because his name figured in the list of suspects of 1984 anti-Sikh riots. That time BJP candidate Sahib Singh Verma emerged victorious.

Sajjan Kumar contested the Lok Sabha elections in 1991 from Outer Delhi and defeated Sahib Singh Verma. In 2004 Sajjan Kumar again defeated the BJP candidate from Outer Delhi.

However, his counterpart BJP candidate, Ramesh Bidhuri, said works of construction of roads, drains, sewerage and electrification were done by the Municipal Corporation and the Delhi government and not him. Even a lay man knows this. Sajjan Kumar could not fool the electorate.

Giving details of weaknesses of the Congress candidate, Bidhuri said that South Delhi had no stadium where the youth could play.

He also said that for the last 40 years, the government had not constructed any big government hospital. Poor people cannot afford private hospitals. They had to go Safdarjung Hospital. Similarly, no new college had come up in the last few years to take care of the growing populace of youngsters.

Raghubir Singh, a voter, said Sangam Vihar was the largest slum in Asia but Sajjan Kumar had done nothing for development of the colony. There is a scheme of the government to make all streets concrete but in Sangam Vihar majority of the streets are still undeveloped. There was no drainage or sewer system. Lakhs of people reside in the colony but it has no government senior secondary school.

Arvinder Singh, a resident of Deoli, said that with the efforts of Sajjan Kumar and other Congress leaders the government has constructed BRT corridor which had benefited the poor people who travel in buses.

BJP ready with poll film
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 26
The BJP has produced a film on its slogan “Mazboot Neta, Nirnayak Sarkar” for the upcoming elections. The film will be telecast across India. Meanwhile, sources said the film has been submitted to the central election committee of the party to get its nod to make it public.

The film will be an alternate to posters and hoardings that have been banned by the Election Commission under the Defacement Act.

It shows the BJP is the only party fit to rule the country.

A senior Delhi BJP leader informed L.K. Advani has been projected as the party’s PM candidate. The film points out the follies of the Congress-led UPA government. It shows the achievement of the BJP-led NDA government, sources said.

Manifesto likely in early April

Though the BJP has started preparation for the Lok Sabha elections far earlier than other political parties, the party’s manifesto will have to wait till the first week of April, as it is still considering various issues.

A BJP leader said the party is mulling over a theme around which its poll promises can be weaved. The major issues may include price rise, agricultural crisis, farmers’ distress, internal security, terrorism and the core Hindutva agenda.

“Our manifesto will be different from other parties. It will focus on issues with which people identify the BJP like building the Ram temple, Article 370 and Uniform Civil Code,” he said.

The BJP is also expected to reiterate its principled opposition to religion-based quota being advocated by the Congress-led UPA.

Congress’ stand on terrorism is also expected to come in for a severe rap in the BJP manifesto, said sources. The principle ruling party at the centre, the BJP maintains, has skirted the nub of cross-border terrorism and has also remained silent on infiltration from across Pakistani and Bangladeshi borders.

Nithari Redux?
80 Gzd kids go missing in 5 months

Ghaziabad, March 26
Tied with a rope, four-year-old Rohit was being carried in a gunny bag on a cycle-rickshaw by his kidnapper. The child regained consciousness and the abductor panicked and fled the scene. Rohit was rescued. But over 80 other children missing from Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh since October have not been so lucky.

In a grim reminder of the Nithari case in Noida where 19 children and young women went missing and were later found raped and murdered, as many as 80 children have been missing in Ghaziabad in the last five months from October 1, 2008, to March 10, 2009.

At least 20 missing children complaints have been filed with the Indirapuram police station followed by 14 in Modi Nagar, 11 each in Pilkhuwa and Niwari, nine children were reported missing from Sahibabad, seven from Sihani Gate, six from Loni, two from Murad Nagar, and one case each was reported from Vijay Nagar, Dhaulana, Masuri and Hapur.

The residents of Ghaziabad allege an apathetic attitude on the part of the police.

“Being a border village of Delhi, the locality is facing a terrible problem of child abduction. When children are found missing, we have to search for them on our own. When we approach the police, they tell us why we produce children if we cannot protect them,” said Ram Kumar, a resident of Bhovapur, told IANS.

Last week villagers in Bhovapur, under the jurisdiction of the Indirapuram police station, recovered Rohit from a gunny bag after the child regained consciousness and the cycle-rickshaw driver became suspicious. Rohit’s kidnapper panicked and left the gunny bag in the cycle-rickshaw and fled.

Among those missing is a four-year-old girl from the same village who has not been traced for the last 15 days.

Rajdev, 13, and Raj Kishore, 11, have been missing from the Bhoor Bharat Nagar area covered by the Vijay Nagar police station for the last two weeks. The father of the two children accused the police of a lack of effort in tracing the missing children.

“They (police) have done nothing to recover the children,” said Babloo, the father of Rajdev and Kishore.

On March 17, six-year-old Karan was abducted from Shaheed Nagar under the Sahibabad police station.

Karan’s father Vijay lodged a complaint with the police but claimed that it was through his own efforts that he was able to trace his son from Buxar in Bihar.

Superintendent of police Akhil Kumar said, “Although at this time the police is engaged in election preparations, I have instructed police officials to be more sensitive on such issues, where children and women are concerned.” — IANS

Female security guard alleges sexual harassment

Noida, March 26
A 30-year-old woman guard with a security agency here has alleged sexual harassment by a senior officer in the company. But the police says it is the firm that has slapped a case against her.

The woman told IANS that the deputy director of the firm had repeatedly sought sexual favours from her. She said she was not given work after she refused to submit to him and eventually asked to quit last week.

“I have two little daughters and was working with the company for 14 years for Rs 3,000 a month. For several months I was tolerating (his behaviour). But the situation kept on worsening,” the woman said.

“Tired, I approached the police. But the police said the company had lodged a complaint against me saying I was trying to disturb peace. How can a single woman harm such a big company?” she asked.

“This happened not only to me but to several other women who are silently suffering sexual harassment,” she added.

Several attempts by IANS to reach the deputy director of the company failed because he did not take the call.

A police officer said, “We have not received any complaint from the lady. Instead, we have a complaint from the company against the woman.”

Noida gets online CNG station
Our Correspondent

Noida, March 26
The first online CNG station started on Wednesday evening near Gijod village in Sector-53 here. The station has a daily capacity of 30,000 kg gas. Managing director of Indraprastha Gas Ltd Rajesh Vedvyas said the station can serve 300 buses and 3,500 cars daily.

The station can serve two buses and two cars simultaneously. The price of gas will be the same as in Noida and Delhi, Vedvyas informed. But due to difference in tax component, people in Delhi pay Rs 18.90 for per kg gas, while in Noida they will have to pay Rs 22.10 per kg.

Earlier on February 12, an online gas station was opened opposite Noida Bus Depot but this mainly catered to the needs of DTC buses.
