Another biker falls to death
New Delhi, March 16 Srikant, a photographer, and his friend Mohit were on their way to Dwarka when their motorcycle skidded off the overbridge around 3 a.m. today. When they reached the sharp curve on the flyover, Srikant lost balance and hit a side verge. They fell on the concrete slab 18 metres down. According to the police, the two were taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital, where Srikant was declared brought dead, while Mohit has been admitted to the ICU with multiple fractures. Srikant is a resident of Rajapur in Dabri. Mohit assisted him in work. Meanwhile, the traffic police has appealed to motorcyclists to drive slow on the stretch to avoid accidents. “We are holding talks with the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to place speed breakers and increase the height of side wall on the flyover. Signboards showing speed limits should be installed,” said Rupinder Singh, DCP Traffic (southern range). Eight deaths have been reported from the flyover in just a week. The sharp curve on the Palam-Dwarka flyover has become a virtual deathtrap for two-wheelers in particular. It might be recalled that a 22-year-old man had died on March 14 when his motorcycle crashed into the side verge on the stretch and fell off the flyover. While on March 11, four members of a family were killed when they fell off the same flyover. Deepak (27), his wife Renu (25), son Bishav (6) and daughter Niru (3) died on the spot. On the same day, Jagmohan (20) was killed when his motorcycle skidded. He was on his way to the airport when the accident took place. On March 8, Bala Krishnan (32) died, while his pillion-rider, Mala Palli sustained critical injuries after their motorcycle crashed into a road divider. |

Anand Jon’s family seeks justice from Obama
New Delhi, March 16 “I hope President Obama understands the racial discrimination that we are going through, and appeal to him as well as the Indian government to intervene so that my brother gets justice,” said Jon’s sister Sanjana. “I just want to urge President Obama to look into the matter. My brother deserves a fresh and unbiased trial. If my brother does not get justice, I will fast until death,” she said. Sanjana recounted the details of the case as she was flanked by her mother Shashi Ebraham and a US-based model, Lauren Boylar, who said she is a witness in Jon’s case. The family is in India to gather support for Jon before an “important” April 1 hearing at a Los Angeles court on arguments that the 34-year-old designer deserves a retrial. They plan to lead a protest march to the American embassy here on Wednesday. “We are specifically here now because on April 1 we have a very important hearing and we want the people here and the Indian media to be aware of it so as to give an unbiased report unlike the American media which only publishes the prosecutor’s version,” Sanjana said. Jon, who dressed celebrities like Janet Jackson and Paris Hilton, was convicted by the Los Angeles Superior Court in November of 16 criminal counts, including sexually assaulting some budding models. Jon was arrested in the US March 6, 2007, on charges of rape and sexual harassment of more than a dozen models. He has been in jail for the last 24 months. — IANS |

Arti claims to be most popular in New Delhi
New Delhi, March 16 “Having served as the Mayor of Delhi for two consecutive years, I am a familiar figure among people. I have tried to do a lot for them and therefore people know me well,” said Mehra. She said as this particular constituency is Punjabi-dominated, she would have a good hold here. If she manages to get the party’s nod, Mehra will be fighting it out with union minister Ajay Maken, who won the seat in 2004 by defeating former union minister Jagmohan. The second probable candidate in fray, Vijay Goel, will have no option than to shift to Chandni Chowk, where he’ll be crossing swords with another union minister Kapil Sibal. The other contender for the seat is MCD standing committee chairman Vijender Gupta. Bollywood actress Hema Malini has already turned down the offer of New Delhi constituency, saying she would like to concentrate on soliciting votes for the party all across the city. Former union minister Sahib Singh Verma’s son Pravesh has surged past Janakpuri MLA and former leader of the opposition in Delhi assembly, Jagdish Mukhi, to emerge as the most powerful claimant for the newly carved constituency of West Delhi. Pravesh Verma’s name is also doing rounds from the South Delhi constituency where he faces stiff challenge from Tughlaqabad MLA Ramesh Bidhuri. Former Mayor Meera Kawariya is seen as the most formidable claimant for the North-West Delhi (reserved) constituency. If she gets the go-ahead, she will face Krishna Tirath, the sitting MP from Karol Bagh (reserved) constituency. Former Test cricket opener Chetan Chauhan has raced past former Delhi BJP chief Harsh Vardhan to emerge as the top contender for the East Delhi constituency. Former East Delhi MP B.L. Sharma Prem has sought to stage a comeback in electoral politics by expressing his desire to enter the fray from the newly created North-East Delhi. |
Fake voter cards aplenty in Gurgaon
Gurgaon, March 16 Regarding the irregularities in voter list and collusion of election office with ex-councillors, an NGO named Adhikaar-The Rights Path has written to the district electoral officer-cum-deputy commissioner to check the anomalies here today. Rakesh Yadav, general secretary of Adhikaar told The Tribune, “We had made a complaint to the deputy commissioner regarding the inclusion of names in voter list, of relatives and friends of ex-councillors who are residing in different districts and states.” He added that elections of municipal corporation are due and likely to take place immediately after the Lok Sabha polls. While citing an example of booth No 63 of Gurgaon assembly in which a voter has got the name twice in the same booth as voter No 756 and 757 and repeated again as 1576 and 1575 by just changing the surnames, age and address, he said, “The voter list of Gurgaon village and Sukhrali village contains several fake voters like this.” Yadav feels that the scenario is the same in Prem Nagar and village Budheda as he affirms, “Names of poor people too have been deleted from the list. They have their voter I card, but their names are missing from the current voter list.” He alleged that at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Gurgaon, in which the duty officer was handed over more than 1,000 forms, the officer rejected the forms of poor people and minorities and as a result, names of more then 700 people from those booths were not included in electoral rolls. The NGO has demanded an investigation into the nexus of election office and ex-councillors. |
Restore Lotika’s property, demand friends
New Delhi, March 16 Taking note of media reports about the 86-year-old professor’s property in Hauz Khas being “fraudulently” taken away from her, her friends including academicians, lawyers, journalists and activists endorsed a petition here today. They said an IPS officer Nirmal Dhoundial and his family assumed duties to take care of Sarkar after her journalist husband Chanchal Sarkar passed away, with eyes on her property. “It is sad to know that people she kept in her house in good faith took advantage of her old age and transferred her property, which is her life’s saving, in the name of Priti Dhoundial (Nirmal’s wife) through a gift deed,” said George Varghese, Lotika’s friend. Varghese said, “Though the signature on the gift deed and video-tape at the time when she was signing the deed show that it’s Lotika who signed the document, we do not know under what circumstances she has signed it.” The friends said they were septic about the Dhoundial family’s conduct as the family did not allow Lotika’s friends to meet her. “We did not have easy access to her. The Dhoundial family always tried to keep her away from meeting her friends. She was practically arrested in her own house,” said Kumud Sharma from Centre for Women’s Development Studies. Calling Lotika the “mother of the feminist jurisprudence in India”, Mohan Rao, professor at JNU said it was inconceivable that she would gift her own house and render herself homeless at this age. “We have copies of the letter that Lotika wrote to Nirmal in which she has mentioned that Nirmal took advantage of her weakened condition and manipulated a transfer of her property in his wife’s name,” said Mohan Rao. “This case is merely indicative of the so-called developed societies in Delhi. The civil society should take up this issue and fight for the safety of elderly women living alone in the city till the time any law is put in place,” said Kapila Vatsyayan, renowned scholar and member of Parliament. The friends decided to send the petition to different offices in the government, including the ministry of home affairs, demanding that Sarkar’s property be transferred back to her and assurance that she would not be harmed in any way. |

The trial court had in June 2008 awarded life imprisonment to both Vijay Pal and Vinod, based on circumstantial evidence. Pal’s complicity with the henchman was proved by the prosecution with the help of his mobile call records, which gave details of his being in constant touch with Vinod before and after the killing. A division bench comprising justices Pradeep Nandrajyog and Aruna Suresh upheld the trial court order of life imprisonment and dismissed the appeal of both the convicts.
