Bikers shoot traders, snatch Rs 15 lakh
New Delhi, March 6 The shocking incident took place around 9 pm when Satnam (30) and Ram Ashrey Tewari (50), both working for a plastic trader, were going on scooter with about Rs 15 lakh. Satnam died on the spot, while Ram Ashray succumbed to his injuries later. According to the police, the victims were on their way to Haiderpur in Shalimar Bagh to deliver the money when they were suddenly overtaken by motorcycle-borne assailants who tried to snatch the money bag. “The miscreants tried to snatch the briefcase containing Rs 15 lakh from the traders, who put up stiff resistance. On this, the robbers shot at them with a pistol,” said a senior police official. The bullet hit Satnam in his throat, while Rameshwar was injured in the abdomen. Both were rushed to Bara Hindu Rao Hospital. The robbers managed to flee with the bag of money. Although there is no clarity on the number of assailants, according to preliminary investigations, the victims were chased by four youths on two bikes, who intercepted the scooter near the gate of Roshanara Bagh after chasing them for few kilometers. The police has managed to speak to some eyewitnesses. Sagarpreet Hooda, DCP (North Delhi) reached the crime scene along with other senior police officials of the area. The police believes that the robbers had done a recee and were aware of the movement of the traders beforehand. atnam and Ram Ashray worked for plastic trader Shyam Sunder and worked in his factory which manufactured plastic granules in Azad Market. The two had reportedly struck an important business deal for their company and were carrying the cash from Azadpur Market to Haiderpur. |
After firing at cop, man dies in mishap
New Delhi, March 6 The victim, Ravi Shankar, also suffered a bullet wound besides accident injuries, giving rise to speculation that the gun carried by the pillion rider went off accidentally and hit him. As a result of bullet injury, Ravi Shankar lost balance of the motor cycle and dashed against the trees on the road. The pillion rider who could not be identified fled the spot. Constable Kailash, working with the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Delhi police, said he was standing at the Ghoga bus stand in the morning to board a bus when the duo came on a motor cycle and fired at him. Kailash, who drives the official car of DCP I.D. Shukla, was not injured in the incident. He, however, does not recognise the two and said he had no enmity with them. The police has recovered two countrymade pistols from the accident site. The driving license found in the pockets of Ravi Shankar gave his address in Trilokpuri area and a police team had reached his house to gather further information besides the identity of the pillion driver. According to police officials ,Ravi Shankar was hit in the backbone, indicating firing by the pillion driver. “We are investigating the matter and will arrest the absconding criminal,” said the police official. |

Shift badminton court from Sirifort, Correa tells SC
New Delhi, March 6 The Supreme Court’s Forest Bench headed by the Chief Justice KG Balakrishnan had appointed the former chairman of Delhi Urban Art’s Commission (DUAC) to examine all options, including moving the badminton and squash courts, under construction for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, from the dense forest area near Sirifort. The project had run into rough weather after 891 trees were cut to construct the stadium. The report blamed the DDA of “procrastination” in reconsidering the location of the stadium to an alternate site two years ago when there was ample time to do so. However, admitting to the paucity of time, Correa said going ahead with the construction of a court at the current site should be subject to design modifications suggested by him. The town planner said the penalty of Rs 5 crore as suggested by the court-appointed Central Empowered Committee (CEC) was too little and a “much larger penalty needed to be imposed on the DDA.” He said the officials involved in the decision to set up the court in the present site should be identified and held responsible. Correa said the proposal to set up a monitoring committee to oversee the re-forestation of the area should be implemented immediately. |
DU protests against improper action in harassment cases
New Delhi, March 6 Members of the Centre for Struggling Women along with democratic and progressive teachers and students had organised the protest. Maya John, a student and member of the Centre said, “The Apex Complaints Committee is the chief regulating body of the university as regards to cases of sexual harassment. Unfortunately, many cases are still pending with the Committee. These reflect that many victims are being denied justice.” The protesters also pointed out the Committee’s failure in solving cases within the stipulated time frame. “This shows the Committee’s insensitivity,” rued John. Protestors who met the chairperson of the Committee highlighted “instances of insensitive handling of victims” during inquiry. In many cases, victims were uncomfortable with certain questions posed to them while their statements were being recorded. Many felt “harassed by the high-handedness and the bureaucratic functioning of the Committee.” For instance, even after repeated appeals for the Committee’s intervention in certain cases, the appeals have been sent back to local committees (college or department). As in a case at Kamla Nehru College where a staff had complained against a colleague who had been assassinating her character. She had lodged the complaint in the college early in 2008. The rumour has been sexual in nature and the work environment has become hostile for her. The accused’s wife had even assaulted her physically on the college premises. Initially, a three-member committee was set up in the college to look into the matter. It ruled the victim’s experience was one of sexual harassment and had asked the accused to apologise to her. But the accused did not obey. Both the victim and the accused were later asked to vacate the college staff quarters. Stating that the victim was sexually harassed, the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has asked the college to take appropriate action. Later when she approached the Apex Committee, it ruled that her experience did not even qualify as one of sexual harassment. It upheld the college’s decision to deny her a housing quarter. Further, it asked the accused to apologise to the college and not to the victim. It reflects how the Committee is refusing to even grant prima facie in such cases. While in another case at the university’s Hindi department, it took the victim, an M.Phil researcher in the department, months to convince the Apex Committee to intervene. As she has complained against department professors (Ajay Tiwari, Ramesh Gautam and HOD Sudhish Pichori), her case has been sabotaged at the local committee i.e. the Faculty of Arts committee at North Campus. Matters were so hostile at the committee that it had to be removed. Meanwhile, the Centre has demanded sensitive submission of some audit by the Apex Committee to the university community, handling of victims during inquiry, a break-up of the number of cases received in the last five years, number of cases registered and rate of convictions. |
BJP says ‘Haar ho’ for Cong’s ‘Jai ho’
New Delhi, March 6 According to sources, the BJP is preparing a “Haar ho” jingle to jostle Congress’ “Jai ho.” Earlier, the saffron party had found it too trivial to even respond. According to some party workers, the BJP has already approached big music companies to compose the lyrics that would be in contrast to the opposition’s song. Besides, the party has launched 70 cassettes. “The songs are catchy,” said a BJP leader. He said the cassettes would be played in all 70 assembly constituencies of the national capital. “The cassettes will be played during all campaigns and party functions,” he affirmed. Meanwhile, the Congress has rewritten the lyrics of the “Jai ho” song. The video has also been shot. “The music video will definitely appeal to voters. It traces the legacy of the Congress and has been filmed in such a manner that it will strike a chord with the youths, who are yearning for some action in politics,” said a Congress leader. It may be recalled that the Congress had recently bought the copyright of the Slumdog Millionaire signature song from T-series for the election campaign. However, if one peeps into the past it is found that experimenting with film songs during election campaigns have not really worked for both the BJP and the Congress. Shahrukh Khan’s “Chak De!” was not good enough in Gujarat for the grand old party. Jagjit Singh failed to set the vote box jingling in 2004 for the BJP. Both the parties are now hoping that “Jai ho” will favour them. |
