Body of schoolboy found
New Delhi, February 27 Chander was resident of Nepali Jhuggi slums in R K Puram and his father works as a painter at a shop in Munirka. A missing complaint was lodged in R K Puram police station. Chander’s classmate Shabnam told the police that Chander had received a call on his mobile phone while they were coming back from school yesterday after which he immediately left for Malai Mandir in R K Puram. According to information, when Chander did not return, the anxious parents panicked and approached the police which registered a missing complaint. The R K Puram police station officials maintain that they could not trace the boy despite their best efforts. Even Chander’s mobile was found to be switched off. His parents were too shocked to react when they heard the news that the body of their son was found. Police suspect that an old enmity may be the reason behind the crime. “We have registered a case of murder and are investigating the matter. Preliminary investigations reveal it could be case of personal enmity,” said a police officer. Although the victim’s mobile phone was not found with the body, the police is trying to get details of the call received by him after which he went to Malai Mandir. “It is a matter of time before we apprehend the criminals,” added a police officer working on the case. |
Smile Pinki Oscar ‘a win for Indian docs’
New Delhi, February 27 Dr Singh said, “‘Smile Pinki’ (SP) is a harbinger of a happy life, it is a real life story and not a theatre-made film. It’s a tribute to the Indian medical expertise of surgeons who relentlessly do their duty with limited resources.” According to Satish Kalra, regional director (South Asia) of The Smile Train, an NGO that cures cleft lips and palates, Megan Mylan, director of SP, created a level-playing platform that mends the slip in the balance of nature, thereby transforming the outcast lives of patients living with clefts. Dr Singh said, “It was a great honour when Megan walked into our organisation in Varanasi to document the life-transforming process of curing clefts of lips and palates. He feels that this Oscar is not only a win for Megan, but also for the medical fraternity.” Satish Kalra outlined, “The Oscar is a testimonial to the genius of Indian surgeons.” Cleft lips and palates, an early congenital anomaly though not fatal are the reason for 4.7 million children of developing countries living an ostracised life. This is actually an economic problem, with a huge population living below the poverty line, both nationally and internationally. “Though the cost of this treatment is just Rs 12,000, today, 400 million patients around the world are unable to afford cleft surgeries, with two million in India alone,” he informed. Another reason for the prevalence of cleft is lack of awareness, hence Dr Singh recommended that the government and the society should take up the plight of cleft-hit children. Meanwhile, today in the morning, when the Oscar winning Smile team called upon Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, it received a warm welcome from the PM’s wife, Gursharan Kaur, who congratulated the team and gifted a wrist watch to the young

Hospitals strike enters 5th day
New Delhi, February 27 Lalit was trying to cover the body of his dead brother, waiting for the postmortem. He says, “Today, I feel how miserable it is to be poor. I cannot perform other formalities because the postmortem is yet to be done. It seems that the government is poking fun at our miseries.” This was a common scene outside every government hospital in the city today. Medical services in around 36 government hospitals in the national Capital were badly hit as the strike which involves around 75,000 group C and D employees and paramedical staff entered the fifth day today leaving several patients helpless. Protestors under the banner of All India Health Employees and Workers Confederation burnt the effigies of health minister Anmbumani Ramadoss here in the city, asking the government to fulfill their demands soon, confirms a hospital spokesperson. Sources in LNJP Hospital say that more than 350 bodies are waiting for postmortems in around 10 hospitals. The condition is terrible. The scene at every government hospital is becoming pathetic day by day. Almost all the OPDs and operation theatres have closed down causing a lot of hardship especially to those who cannot afford the bills of private hospitals. Moreover, with 750 employees striking work in around 80 dispensaries, the protest has gained momentum in the city. Besides, services in X-ray departments, wards, kitchens, laundry, blood banks, path labs, ultrasounds and mortuaries in the hospitals came to a halt which created a terrible scene outside the hospitals. “People are suffering badly and had to go back without treatment,” says a hospital guard. Sources confirm four deaths of patients in hospitals yesterday due to lack of care. The Delhi government has already imposed Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) on the paramedical staff and Group C and D employees. All India Health Employees Association coordinator Ramkishan said that their demands are genuine. He warned the government that if their demands are not heard, they will fill up the jails following the path of non-violence. A protestor said, “We know that many people are suffering because of the strike, but we are also helpless as the government is not paying heed to our problems.” |
