New Delhi, March 20
A large number of Parvesh Verma’s supporters today demonstrated outside the residence of BJP’s prime ministerial candidate L.K. Advani. They were protesting as Parvesh Verma, son of former Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma, has been denied Lok Sabha ticket from West Delhi.

They alleged the party had cheated him. Senior party leaders had assured he would be given a ticket from West Delhi. His name was even put before the central election committee. But his candidature has been rejected in the last moment due to the pressure of anti-Jat lobby, they said.

The saffron party has deceived Parvesh, they roared. His father has done a lot of work for the party and in return Parvesh had been given nothing.

Talking to The Tribune Parvesh said, “During the assembly elections the party had promised me a ticket from West Delhi. But I have been deceived.” Now he feels totally isolated.

When asked the reason for being denied a ticket by the party in which his father is a senior leader, Parvesh said it would have been done under some pressure.

When asked if he would support Jagdish Mukhi who has succeeded in getting ticket from West Delhi, he said, “All depends on my supporters. It is very difficult to convince them.”

On contesting the general elections as an independent candidate, Parvesh said, “Nothing of that sort has been planned yet.”

DUTA opposes VC on semester system
Agitating teachers disrupt Academic Council meeting
Charu Singh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 20
Members of DUTA sat on dharna in front of a key meeting of the Academic Council today. The DUTA was opposing the “unilateral and unacademic move” of the vice-chancellor to impose the semester system of examinations at the UG level. Further, DUTA has issued directive to all the members of the Academic Council to oppose this autocratic move “tooth and nail.”

Agitated teacher members stormed the well of the house on Friday when the VC refused to hear the objections raised by them against the semester system. The meeting was not allowed to continue because of the members’ persistent demand to withdraw the agenda on introduction of semester system at UG level, the teacher members further condemned the VC for the “arbitrary closure” of the AC meeting without taking any agenda listed for today.

Teachers are describing the VC’s behaviour to be “draconian” and his measure for imposing the semester system has been opposed by the teachers of Delhi University. DUTA informs that, “It is apparent that the VC instead of strengthening the existing annual examination system is hell-bent to destroy the already decaying exam system.”

University teachers are against major systemic changes that are being introduced into the university through the semester system proposed by the vice-chancellor.

Aditya Narayan Misra, president DUTA informs, “We have taken serious note of the move made by the vice-chancellor to introduce a major systemic change through the semester system at the under-graduate level without taking into confidence the teaching community at large.”

He adds, “this move is not to be taken lightly, it is an issue with far reaching implications for the entire university involving changes in the evaluation system, course structures and their contents, pedagogy, and the academic calendar including vacations. It is remarkable that the proposed change is being attempted to be introduced without even a semblance of framework for it.”

Misra comments, “The proposal has come from outside the university in the context of globalization of higher education and the vice-chancellor is facilitating its mindless application.”

The DUTA has described this decision as an “arbitrary decision of the VC,” and called upon the Academic Council members to stop this proposed imposition.

The DUTA warned the VC that if the examination is to be conducted by the university in the proposed fashion, it would be totally chaotic given the university’s inability to declare results even of a single annual examination on time; results are never ready before the reopening of the university after the summer break. If the examination is to be conducted by the colleges themselves, the system would be replete with dangerous consequences for the evaluation system and the consequent gradation of colleges.

DUTA further informs this would undermine uniformity in the evaluation system and thereby introduce variation in the value of degrees so obtained by students.

Gurgaon Seat
Fight mainly between Cong, BSP
Sonika Bhatia
Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, March 20
With the Lok Sabha elections in entire Haryana to be held on May 7, the political temperature in the millennium city is on the rise. Gurgaon has become a parliamentary seat after the inclusion of Mewat regions and a part of Ahirwal as Rewari region.

The Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) was the first to announce its candidate Rao Narbir Singh, which was followed in April 2008 by the BSP nominating Chaudhary of Mewat Zakir Hussain, son of stalwart Late Chaudhary Tayyab Hussain, as its candidate. Hussain is the only person in the country to have been minister from three different states.

The BJP nominated Sudha Yadav, who has won only once a decade back in 1999, taking advantage of the Kargil wave.

As far as the Congress is concerned, the party hardly has options, as its prime leader and current MP Rao Inderjeet Singh, who is the son of another stalwart Rao Birender Singh, has conveyed his decision to the party high command to contest from the Gurgaon seat. The Congress does not have any other leader of his stature, as all other aspirants, barring Capt Ajay Yadav, are either non-active and have been continuously losing elections for a decade and a half or are inexperienced. Gurgaon is a prestigious seat and the Congress would not like to take risk by fielding a new face.

However, major surprise this time is the weight behind the BSP in terms of its nominee Zakir Hussain, who has twice won the assembly elections and in 2005 lost by only a few hundred votes. His family is in active politics for the last three generations and his father and grandfather have been MP and MLA several times. Also, with the death of his father late last year, he is likely to get majority of the Meo votes and the claim appears to be strong if one goes by the strength of the crowd that turned up for his father’s cremation. More than two lakh Meos from various states gathered for his cremation showing their faith in Tayyab Hussain, who was Chaudhary of all communities of Mewat.

The HJC’s nominee Rao Narbir Singh last won an assembly election in 1996 and since then he has been changing parties and losing elections. Narbir though may get a section of Yadav votes as well as some personal votes.

On the other hand, Sudha Yadav, the BJP nominee, has won just once riding the strong Kargil wave and after that she has lost all election (assembly or parliamentary) by a considerable margin.

The Congress, by fielding Rao Inderjeet, hopes that it will get majority of the votes from the Ahirwal region, thus giving a strong fight to the BSP. This means that in all terms the fight for the prestigious Gurgaon seat is likely between the BSP and the Congress.

Schoolgirl dies in auto-bus crash

Ghaziabad, March 20
An 18-year-old girl was killed and four of her classmates were injured when the autorickshaw they were riding in was hit by a private bus coming from the opposite direction on Friday, the police said.

The girls were on their way to Adhyatmik Nagar to appear in their Class 12 board exam.

“Six girls were on way to their school in an autorickshaw. As they reached the Hapur intersection about 6.30 am, a private bus coming from ALT Centre hit their auto from the opposite direction,” a police officer said.

He said Lakshmi died on the spot while Kanchan and Preeti were rushed to Sarvodaya Hospital in Kavi Nagar. A boy who boarded the same auto was also brought to the hospital in a serious condition.

However, three other girls - Monika, Sonia and Nisha - managed to go to the school with injuries and appeared in their exam.

“We were going for our exam. It was our fifth paper today that was to start at 7.30 am. Since we all came from the same area, we took an auto and started early from house so that we could revise the syllabus once. As our auto reached Hapur chungi, a bus coming from opposite side rammed into us,” said Kanchan.

“My whole year has gone. I missed an exam for which I was well prepared. I have also lost my friend Lakshmi,” she added.

“We have seized the bus and the auto, and are trying to nab the drivers. We are looking for them,” the police officer said. — IANS

Students allege cheating by Noida college
College says they damaged property

Noida, March 20
Students of a private management institute here on Thursday complained to the police about their college cheating them by making false promises of assured placements but instead found themselves booked for damaging college property. The institute termed the incident a “conspiracy”.

A group of students of Gayatri International Institute of Planning & Management (GIIPM) in this satellite township adjoining New Delhi claimed that the college had given them false assurances of a university degree and placements with leading firms after charging a fee of Rs 2,50,000 per annum.

“The college promised that it would provide a regular MBA degree. But when we enquired from Guru Jambeshwar University, to which the college was affiliated, they told us that no college outside Haryana was entitled to give us a regular degree. They told us that the institute was only entitled to provide us a correspondence degree, which was not laid down under the college’s admission agreements,” said Sarvesh Mishra, a fourth semester MBA student of GIIPM.

“Further, the college promised us excellent placements at a good package. Only a few days are left for our MBA course (to finish), and there are no placements in sight. We paid the full fees at the start of the course and many of us are studying here on education loans. But the college has been cheating us,” he said.

“When we approached the media and the police, a college official asked us why we went there and beat up one of us. Some students then retaliated and broke some window panes of the institute,” Mishra said.

The police, till evening, did not register any case against the college management, but booked two students for damaging college property.

“We are looking into the matter. A formal enquiry has been launched. The students damaged property and our first job was to book those responsible for the violence,” said Parmesh Shukla, station house officer of the Sector 20 police station.

The institute described the incident as a “conspiracy” hatched by a former teacher who had been sacked.

“The college had removed a teacher, Rajesh Gupta, some six month back. Today, he conspired with some students who went to the police after damaging our property. The students had not finished their course and intended to disrupt our expansion process,” said Shishu Pal Shankar, dean (administration) of GIIPM. — IANS

Tribune News Service

Gurgaon, March 20
Ex-deputy speaker of the Haryana assembly Gopi Chand Gahlot has said that he and his supporters will take strict action if the administration does not do justice to Mahender Singh, a resident of village Sukhrali, whose building near Iffco Chowk has been destroyed in the midnight claiming it to be an illegal construction.

While talking to the media here today, Gahlot mentioned that he had met the deputy commissioner who told him that strict action will be taken if anyone was found guilty.

It is to be mentioned that the additional deputy commissioner (ADC), yesterday night came with five JCB machines to remove the building consisting of eight shops, two hotels and liquor vend. Significantly, the structure comes under the HUDA administration, but none of its officials were present on the spot.

The ADC said that the construction of the building and liqour vend in the area was illegal as it fell under green belt, and so it was an encroachment, which they needed to remove. He mentioned that he had taken the step after studying all the papers.

Mahender Singh said that he had constructed the building years back and if it was illegal, the administration should have removed it earlier. He said that he had a stay order on the demolition of the building from the court and no one could destroy it.

Singh had claimed that the when they had told the ADC that he could not remove the construction and that too without any notice and showed him the stay order, he torn the papers said that he did not know about any orders and that he was there to remove the building which he will do.

Singh also alleged that the ADC had told them that he was not afraid of anyone and will do what he wanted to do.
