Commando shoots self accidentally
New Delhi, March 29 According to information, Anil Kumar (25) was hit by three bullets when his AK 47 machine-gun went off accidentally around 8 am. “It was around 8 in the morning when Anil thought of checking his machine gun before handing it over to the commando who was to take charge from him near Vasant Continental Hotel. However, it seems the gun went off after some mishandling and hit Anil,” said a police official from the Vasant Vihar police station. He was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre but was declared brought dead. Anil received two bullets in the stomach which punctured his kidneys while the third hit him in his hand. Ruling out any foul play in the incident, a senior police official said that there were many eyewitnesses to the incident. “It is a case of mishandling of the gun. An enquiry is being done and no foul play has come to light so far. Besides, we have several eyewitnesses who told us what had happened,” said a police official. Anil was with ‘Vajra’, Delhi police’s anti-riot control vehicle for the last six months. His family lives in Rewari district of Haryana and has been informed about the incident. |
Man injured by neighbour
Gurgaon, March 29 Ram received stitches on his forehead after his neighbour had beaten him up on March 15. He had claimed that when he visited the Rajinder Park police station, his complaint was not registered and they had to run after the police again and again. “It has been almost two weeks now and still no action has been taken yet,” Ram clarified. His son Raj Kumar affirmed that their neighbours are in the habit of abusing after drinking and a case in this regard has already been pending in the court. He said that this time when three of them were loitering around their house, his father tried to stop them as all the women were sitting in verandah. However, they started abusing him. The verbal fight became serious. Raj said, “When we went to lodge the complaint, the police did not respond and even asked to get the medical done of our own. We got it done but still have not received the copy of the same as the hospital administration said that they would give the same to the police only.” While talking to The Tribune, the SHO Raj Pal Singh said that they have not registered any complaint as it was just a small fight. He said that the details of any stitch marks had not been provided by the hospital and if he had been told about it, he would have definitely registered the complaint and taken action. The police claims that no one was injured during the fight but one could easily see the fresh marks of stitches on the left side of Gheesa Ram’s forehead. |
Part-time govt workers clamour for demands
Gurgaon, March 29 Asha workers and mid-day meal employees, besides those serving in different government departments on part-time, daily wages, ad hoc or contractual basis raised slogans against the state authorities. The employees had come from Faridabad, Palwal, Mewat, Rewari, Mahendergarh and Gurgaon districts to participate in the protest. It was the third such commissionorate-level demonstration after Hisar and Rohtak; and the next would be staged at Ambala on April 5. Employee leaders Virender Dangwal and Raj Kumar presided over the programme, while sangh’s state convenor Dharmbir Phougat and CITU leader Satbir Singh were the main speakers. Subhash Lamba conducted the proceedings. Addressing the protesters, the employee leaders asserted that even the state government, which was supposed to be the custodians of employees’ rights, was exploiting them by not following the labour laws and rules framed by itself. “Cleanliness workers posted in villages are getting just Rs 2,000 per month, whereas the state government has announced that all workers would get at least Rs 3,510 as minimum wages,” they alleged, adding that if the government itself was not abiding by the rules and norms meant for employees’ welfare, the plight and exploitation of those serving in the private sector could well be imagined. Pointing out the acute problem of housing facilities for the employees posted in cities like Gurgaon, the employees’ leaders demanded that colonies for workers be established at the earliest. They further alleged that many workers like those engaged in preparing mid-day meals were not getting the benefit of provident fund scheme and other basic facilities. The protesters submitted a 14-point charter of their demands to the Gurgaon divisional commissioner D.P.S.Nagal, for being forwarded to the state Chief Minister. Later, talking to newsmen, the employees’ leaders maintained that they would approach all political parties who were fielding their candidates from the state in the ensuing Lok Sabha elections with their demands. Members of state power corporations, PWD, public health, municipal bodies, Class IV and several other employees’ unions participated in the demonstration. |

Virtual ban on
recruitments: Assocham
New Delhi, March 29 Around 90 per cent of over 150 human resource (HR) officials, participating in an internal seminar organised by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) said there was a “virtual ban on fresh recruitments in private sector as attrition rate has subsided in almost all sectors”. They said the HR departments were under severe pressure to come up with new strategies to cut costs as Indian corporates are now trying to avoid lay-offs and restructure operations with a “human face”. “In order to compensate against lay-offs, the management in majority of the cases is being advised by HR professionals to curtail to a legitimate extent of 10-15 per cent wage cuts in total emoluments at middle and senior middle level and that of 25-35 per cent at senior levels,” said Assocham president Sajjan Jindal. Only 5-7 per cent wage cuts are being recommended for lower level employees as the focus is more on cutting administrative costs, he said. Over 100 HR professionals said employees’ unions in the corporate world have stopped demanding wage revision and are now cooperating with cost-cutting measures on condition that lay-offs should be avoided. Nearly 20 per cent of HR professionals, however, said some corporate houses were still following the HR policies of the past and their employees enjoyed all benefits. Banking, finance and business outsourcing sectors continue to recruit fresh people as demand is now picking up in these segments, they said. Jindal added that the economic activity would pick up after the elections as several stalled projects would resume and fresh budgetary allocations would further boost the economy. “The economy will start bouncing back by May 2010,” he added. —IANS |
Report Card: Jagdish Tytler (North-East) Ananya Panda Tribune News Service
New Delhi, March 29 He takes the credit of the setting up of National Highway Authority of India and toll paid expressways in addition to amending the Citizenship Act that granted great relief to the NRIs and POI. Tytler claims that the redevelopment of the old refugee camps and slums of Kingway Camp was due to his efforts. “I have instituted the Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar by renovating the neglected areas of Kingsway Camp, namely Hudson and Outram Lines. His outlined list of accomplishments further entails—setting up of dams, night shelters, traffic training centres and community parks in his constituency in addition to ensuring the provision of roads, drinking water, electricity and sulabh toilets in all the slum clusters of the area. Further, the inauguration of flyover from Rani Jhansi Road to Tees Hazari Road about a few months back, which the MP proclaims to be due to his effort, is the step taken by the NDMC and the initiation of over bridge project from Azad Market to Krishnaganj is carried by MCD, which is under the BJP’s authority. No development has been done by the MP,” outlines an MCD councillor from the DS segment, on conditions of anonymity. On the other hand, the Tytler’s camp says, “He has spearheaded the work of open air theatres and community centres in Kabir Basti and Nehru Kutiya, besides the installation of high-voltage electric grid in Shahzada Bagh.” As per government records, out of the total Rs 25.84 crore allocated to him under the MPLADS, he has spent Rs 19.05 crore on developmental projects. But across-section of DS constituency maintains that though the constituency has seen some changes in terms of DDA flats in Nehru Vihar in the past, widening of roads in Shastri Nagar and Nehru Vihar, nothing significant has been done. Again, the promises that were made in the manifestoes, like covering of drains from Shakti Nagar to Najafgarh, renovating of Rosanara Garden appear to be poll gimmicks to many others. |
’84 riot case
New Delhi, March 29 The party said that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has turned into ‘Congress Bureau of Investigation’. “The CBI has furthered Congress’s political agenda by giving a clean-chit to Jagdish Tytler. We have not seen such a misuse of CBI till date,” said BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar. “They had earlier given clean-chits to Mayawati and Mulayam Singh Yadav and now to Jagdish Tytler also. We reject CBI’s clean-chit and now it is for the people to decide,” said Javadekar. The CBI on Saturday submitted its report in a city court on its investigation into Tytler’s alleged role in a case of inciting a mob to attack a group of Sikhs. Javadekar said giving clean-chit to Tytler was like rubbing salt on the wounds of riot victims. The CBI had earlier told the court that it had examined California-based witness Jasbir Singh in the case. |

Leaflets against Maya in Noida create a flutter
Noida, March 29 The anti-Mayawati and BSP leaflets have praised Samajwadi Party sky high. The administration staff is busy collecting as many pamphlets as possible. The pamphlets and leaflets do not mention the name of the printer or the printing press which has printed them. A case under Section 127-A of the People’s Representation Act has been registered with Sector-20 police station by Amit Kumar, in-charge of the Jhandpura police post. The district administration suspects that Samajwadi Party leaders may have got the leaflets printed and distributed. The police is trying to find out the printer and distributors of the leaflets. Even the local intelligence unit staff has been alerted about the matter. A large number of pamphlets and leaflets have been distributed in the jhuggis in the area. Two cases of gang rapes, Ghori Vachhera incident, in which five farmers were killed in police firing, have been prominently highlighted in the leaflets and the BSP government has been strongly criticised and condemned. The pamphlet also questions the Mayawati government on the issue of payment of land compensation to farmers. The BSP appears to have exerted tremendous pressure on the administrative and police authorities to nab the people behind the leaflets. Since G.B. Nagar is Mayawati’s home district, the chief minister is reported to be trying her best to ensure the victory of BSP candidate Surinder Nagar from here in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Meanwhile, the jhuggi dwellers hear fear that the police might harass them by accusing them of distributing the leaflets. However, the police says distribution of such leaflets is quite common during election days. |
