Direct Karunanidhi to withdraw comments,
BJP to President

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, September 27
BJP president Raj Nath Singh has said that the President, Prime Minister and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi should compel the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to withdraw his comments about Lord Ram and Ramsetu and express regrets. Otherwise the President should dismiss him from the post of Chief Minister.

Speaking at a dharna at Rajghat organised by the Delhi Pradesh BJP, Raj Nath Singh said that Lord Ram had influenced the entire world. “In many Muslim countries people worship Lord Ram and Hanuman”. Ramleelas are organised in many countries of the world. He has asked if Lord Ram did not exist, why Mahatama Gandhi Ji used to sing ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram - Patit Pawan Sita Ram’. Even after being shot the last words uttered by Gandhiji were ‘He Ram’.

“The anti-religious Central government is hatching a conspiracy to deny the existence of Maryada Purshottam Lord Ram,” he said.

Senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj said that the hair of Prophet Mohammad is still preserved in Hazratbal, Kashmir. The faith of crores of Muslims is connected with the sacred hair. Crores of Muslims are following the path of the prophet. Jesus Christ was born from the womb of Virgin Mary. The entire Christian community of the world believes in it. The followers of all the religions trust their faith. The entire world recognises the existence of God. All religions believe in God although their methods of worships and religious rites may be different.

Prof. Vijay Kumar Malhotra said that Lord Ram and Ramsetu have been described in the Kamban Ramayana of South India. One will find Kamban Ramayana in every family of South India. There was a detailed description about Lord Ram and incidents of his life and Ram-Ravana war in this Ramayana. A Chief Minister can not deny the invaluable book of belief by telling that Ram and Ramsetu were only myths. The human history is only 5500 years old whereas Lord Ram was born nine lakh years ago. Even children know and believe in such long history. In India the day starts with speaking Ram-Ram.

“The ruler intoxicated with power may try to deny the existence of our ideal Lord Ram, but Lord Ram lives in the soul of India”, he said.

BJP Delhi Pradesh president Harsh Vardhan said that the Central government and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi should not take the patience of Hindus as cowardice. The BJP was being patient in the interest of the country. Karunanidhi should withdraw the insulting words about Lord Ram.

“I have travelled more than two dozen countries. I have seen the temples of Lord Ram in Washington, Brazil, Indonesia, Mauritius. In Rio-De-Jeneiro of Brazil there is a grand statue of Mahatama Gandhi on which the last words of Gandhi ji ‘He Ram’ are written. In foreign countries the Ramcharitmanas and Ramleelas are staged with zeal. Now the modern management scientists are researching that how Bharat conducted the state affairs for 14 years by placing Ram’s wooden sandals on the thrown”, Harsh vardhan said.

Besides, M. Venkaiah Naidu, Vijay Goel, Om Prakash Kohli, Jagdish Mukhi, Ram Bhaj, S.S. Bajwa, Abdul Rasheed, Ramesh Bidhuri, Pawan Sharma, Shyam Lal Garg, Satya Joshi, Sahab Singh Chauhan, Surya Bhan Pandey, Subhash Arya, Vijender Gupta and many legislators, councillors and senior workers participated in the dharna today.

Why overlook Tehelka’s sting op: Jaya Jaitley

New Delhi, September 27
Close on the heels of government taking stern action against a television channel for its fake sting operation, Former Samata Party president Jaya Jaitley today demanded action against Tehelka , the media firm that started using sting operations in a major way against politicians and beaurocrats.

“Tehelka, like the ‘Live India’ incident, was based on pretension and fabrication. If the government can act against one sting operation then why not against the other which started it all,” she said at a press conference here today.

Jaitley was caught on Tehelka camera talking to reporters posing as defence dealers in 2001 in which she purportedly mentioned some money to be given to a party functionary.

“What I had been always warning about the implications of sting operations has come true. Government is forced to act. But why only in one case when both the sting operations were based on pretensions and fabrications,” she said.

The information and broadcasting ministry had last week ordered ‘live india’ channel to go off air for a month for the telecast of a fabricated sting operation implicating a Delhi teacher.–PTI

Jains approach HC to quash FERA charges

New Delhi, September 27
The Jain hawala scam, involving top politicians and bureaucrats has been long over but the alleged ‘hawala’ transaction amount of 2,26,000 dollars case is still pending in the court.

The Jain brothers, who have been discharged in all the hawala cases, have sought quashing of the FERA cases against them, maintaining that they have not violated any of the provisions of the foreign exchange regulation act.The final arguments in the cases are slated to come up in the Delhi High Court on September 27.

All 42 politicians, including LK Advani and VC Shukla, have also been discharged in the light of the Delhi High Court ruling that dairy entries were not admissible in court unless there is any corroboratory evidence.

Making their submissions through their counsel, the Jains and their employee, JK Jain argued before justice Ravinder Bhatt at the last hearing that the cases filed against them had no substance and should be quashed at the outset.

J K Jain has been charged for abetting the Jains for acquiring foreign exchange, and not surrendering it to the authorities and for selling the same illegally without obtaining permission from the RBI in violations of the provisions of sections 8(1), 8(2) and 14 of FERA, 1973.

Mohammed Ameer Deen Habib and SSO Arif have been charged for purchasing foreign exchange and for failing to surrender the same.

The initial investigations carried out by the CBI had revealed that JK Jain had been receiving money from various sources including Arif who was staying in Mumbai. The money was being received on behalf of the Jain brothers.

The CBI revealed that the money was being received from one M/S gem traders in which Mohd Ameer Deen Habib alias Ameer Bhai and SSO Arif were partners.

Ameer and Arif had left the country and were later arrested by the agency from Dubai. The CBI had identified the diaries seized from the office of JK Jain, which revealed the names of many politicians and bureaucrats in coded forms. The entries in the diaries from 1-26 relate to the FERA charges and the directorate of enforcement has filed the cases of foreign exchange violations against the four Jains, Ameer and SSO Arif.

The entries in the diaries showed the name of the countries from where the transactions amounting to 2,26,50,000 dollars were carried out.

The Jains have appealed to the Delhi High Court to quash the cases against them, as they have committed no violation of foreign exchange. Earlier they had approached the lower court for quashing the pending FERA cases against them, but the court had dismissed their petition.–UNI

Eco-nationalism driving force behind freedom
struggle: Habib

New Delhi, September 27
Noted historian Irfan Habib today said economic nationalism was the driving force behind the Independence struggle.

Inaugurating the ‘ Freedom Week’ at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library here, the leftist historian said,’’ we have forgotten the ideas of national movement, we forgot 1857, this is the right time for us to think that are we loyal to the legacy of national movement?’’

On the occasion of revolutionary Bhagat Singh’s birth centenary and Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary, the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library is celebrating ‘Freedom Week’ from September 26 to October 3 in the Capital.

Prof Habib, who had spent his early 15 years under the British rule, recalled that economic nationalism which was propounded by the grand old man of India Dadabhai Naoroji’ was the major driving force behind the national movement.

“Britain through the policy of trade destroyed India, particularly the textile industry which was the backbone of the country’s economy at that time,” he said, adding that poverty in India was the creation of the British rule.

Prof Habib told a gathering of scholars, journalists and students that after the arrival of Mahatma Gandhi in India the scenario of the national movement totally changed. While other national movement leaders had only spoken about uplifting poor, Gandhi translated this idea into action. Incidentally, the first two movements of Mahatma Gandhi, ‘Champaran agitation’ and ‘Kheda satyagraha’, were against the economic atrocities of the British rulers.

“It was Gandhi who said that poor had a say in how India should be governed,” he said.

Prof habib said that against the general perception that Gandhi and Bhagat Singh had major differences they have lot more in common. Although Bhagat Singh was called terrorist because of his association with revolutionary terrorist movement in India, he was a socialist by heart.

“Bhagat Singh had initiated the idea that poor can only be served if there is socialism,” Prof Habib added.

According to Prof Habib, Mahatma Gandhi was a devout Hindu and Bhagat Singh was an atheist, still both the leaders emphasised that a nation in order to be a notion must be secular.

Summing up the lecture , Prof Habib pointed out that in the process of reinventing ‘’ourselves as a nation, we should not deviate from the ideas and concepts of our freedom legacy.’’ —UNI

Judgement copies to be delivered on
sentencing: Supreme Court

New Delhi, September 27
The Supreme Court today strongly deprecated the tendency of delivering judgement without supplying the copy of the judgement to the convicted person.

The observation came during the hearing, when one of the petitioners sought his release on bail on the ground that Bombay High Court had not delivered a reasoned judgement though his appeal was dismissed two months ago. He also said that his right to appeal against the High Court judgement had been taken away and the court had already granted interim bail to bollywood star Sanjay Dutt and other convicts in 1993 bomb blast case on the same ground.

A bench comprising justices BN Agarwal, PP Naolekar and DK Jain cautioned Bombay High Court against such practice and observed “Bombay High Court is following the footsteps of Allahabad High Court which also took a long time to supply a copy of the judgement after pronouncing the judgement.’’

As per law the convict is entitled to get a copy of judgement of conviction and sentence immediately after the judgement is pronounced to enable him to challenge his conviction and sentence in a higher court.

According to the Supreme Court ruling in state of Punjab vs Jagdev Singh Talwandi the detention of a person without giving him a copy of the judgement was not justified and his or her liberty cannot be curtailed till a copy of the judgement was supplied to the convicted person.

The Supreme Court had already granted interim bail to over a dozen convicts including Sanjay Dutt, as the TADA court had not given them a copy of the judgement. The condition of bail was that all the convicts would have to surrender immediately after getting the copy of the detailed judgement.–UNI
