DU girls protest police inaction in molestation cases
New Delhi, September 20 A student (name withheld) was travelling with her mother in a rickshaw near the Civil Lines police station when the candidates pulled down the girl from the rickshaw and tore her clothes. Though the victim's mother lodged a complaint with the cops, they got no help. In another incident, a student from IP was surrounded by around 15-20 men and was molested. The students claim that there were more such shocking incidents of sexual assaults against the university students. Recently, a girl from Hansraj College was dragged into the elevator at the Vishwavidyalaya metro station and was allegedly molested by a gang of 15-20 men. According to the students, many such incidents were left unreported since the victims do not file any complaints due to psychological trauma. The DU girls insist that the police have refused so far to file any complaints. The students are demanding that the Police Entrance Examination should be declared null and void and also that all the culprits should be given suitable punishment. They also demand that no police examination should be conducted near Delhi University colleges in the future. They have also called upon the DU vice-chancellor to take suo motu action and ask the police commissioner to intervene in this matter at the earliest. |

French teller of Indian stories
New Delhi, September 19 Her recital not only attracted children, but also kept adults clinging on to their chairs. Muriel said, "As adults, we are children." All her stories have a moral. Her passion for stories arise out of her desire to know more about the world. "People call me a story thief. I steal stories from all over the world. They are an integral part of anyone's culture," said Muriel. "I knew about India before I arrived here, through the folk tales." Indian stories are her favourite. "India has that mysterious and oriental feel. Stories from this land never fail to amuse me," she added. Besides reciting stories, Muriel talked about art. When asked whether stories had to be true always, she said, "Stories are always true. Truth and lie is a dialectical process in storytelling." Often children ask after a story whether it actually happened. "A folk tale is always a piece of imagination, but it has a moral. There is a strong tradition of lying in storytelling." After the success of the Harry Potter series, there has been a proliferation in authors writing for children in the international scenario. But the phenomenon needs to arrive in India. The NBT is trying to give a positive push to writers here. |
