Widow shot dead
Noida, September 21 The wounded mother and daughter were rushed to the Yoshada hospital in Ghaziabad where mother was declared brought dead. Rajbala was living in the village Dabra under Dadri Kotwali police station with her two sons, Rahit, 13 and Sonu, 10, and daughter Nikki, 8. Her husband Verinder had died some eight years ago due to electrocution. After Verinder’s death, his brothers took possession of Rajbala’s land, forcibly. Rajbala had appealed to the district authorities against this and demanded compensation for the land. Rajbala’s name had been then entered in the revenue records as inheritor of Verinder’s land. On September 19, 2007, the ADM had held his court in the village itself and handed over a cheque for Rs 12 lakh to Rajbala as compensation for Verinder’s land. It had angered her brothers-in-law no end. Equipped with firearms, Partap, Shakti, the elder brothers-in-law and younger brothers-in-law, Rampal, Sunder, Yoginder and Partap’s son Billu attacked Rajbala’s house at midnight, 1.30 am on Thursday. Rajbala and her eight-year-old daughter Nikki were critically wounded in the hail of bullets fired on them while sons Rohit and Sonu fled away to save themselves. Villagers rushed the mother and daughter to the Dadri hospital from where they were referred to Yoshada hospital in Ghaziabad. Rajbala had breathed her last here while little Nikki is struggling for her life. On a written complaint filed by Rohit, Dadri Kotwali police have registered a murder case against Verider’s brothers, four of whom have been arrested while Yoginder and Partap’s son Billu are absconding. |

3 FIRs registered: Police to HC
New Delhi, September 21 Filing the status report before the bench of Chief Justice M K Sharma and justice Sanjeev Khanna, Delhi Police counsel Mukta Gupta said that the FIRs pertaining to the three separate incidents near DU between September 15-19 were registered with Mukherjee Nagar, Civil Lines and Maurice Nagar police stations. However, the bench transferred the matter to another court, after the counsel informed that the FIR registered with the Mukherjee Nagar police station related to a function that was oganised by the North East students on September 15. Incidentally, the Chief Justice, before whom the matter was listed for hearing, hails from Assam. The PIL is fixed for September 24 before a different bench. According to the report, police delayed to register the FIRs, as in the first incident of eve teasing, the complainant had declined to reveal her name. In the second incident on September 16, the warden of IP College had requested for the deployment of more force in the area to maintain law and order in view of the examination for police constables, but refused to reveal the incident, the counsel added. Denying any previous instance of eve teasing by any aspirant police constable, she said that in last two years 43,000 candidates had appeared for the examination, but no previous incident of molestation had been recorded so far. — PTI |

Uphaar case: HC rejects Ansal brothers’ plea
New Delhi, September 21 “I find no error and infirmity in the judgement of the trial court,” justice S N Dhingra said. There is no force in the petition, justice Dhingra further said, while dismissing the petition of Ansal brothers. Five accused, including Sushil and Gopal Ansal, had moved the High Court on September 17, seeking quashing of the trial court’s order of September 5, which had dismissed their plea to file written submissions before the pronouncement of the judgement in the 10-year-old case. Besides Ansals, three managers of Uphaar cinema hall Ajit Chaudhary, Nirmal Singh Chopra and R.K. Sharma, in a joint petition, alleged that the trial court, from time to time, had raised certain queries and sought a few clarifications during the course of final arguments... However, it did not hear petitioners’ counsel on those clarifications and fixed the next date of hearing. The trial court, on August 22, did not accept their written arguments on the ground that the prosecutor was not present and disposed of their application without hearing them, they had alleged. The trial court is likely to fix on October 22 the date for pronouncement of its verdict in the case of June 13, 1997 fire tragedy, which had claimed 59 lives including children and women during the screening of a Hindi film. A total of 12 accused, including south Delhi-based Uphaar theatre owners—Sushil and Gopal Ansal, have been charged with causing death by negligent act. |

Cycle park at Metro stations soon
New Delhi, Sept 21 As per DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal, out of 59 stations, 42 have parking sites. “Forty-two Metro stations have facilities where bicycles can be parked. But what we are planning is to have earmarked iron stands at all stations so that bicycles can be parked comfortably. These stands will be similar to the ones used at other bicycle stands,” he said. Meanwhile, parking contractors have been instructed to earmark the area for cycle parking. “The DMRC is negotiating with parking contractors for installation of these cycle stands. If required, we will get these stands fitted at selected parking sites. The bottom line is bicycle users will not be denied parking in Metro parking sites,” he said. To begin with seven stations—Shahdara, Seelampur, Janakpuri (West), Dwarka Mor, Tis Hazari, Rithala and Uttam Nagar (East) stationss—will have iron bicycle stands, largely on the basis of the number of bicycles parked usually. “For example at Seelampur, about 550-600 bicycles are parked in a day so the stand will have the capacity for about 600 bicycles,” he said. As far as fares are concerned, for smart card holders the bicycle parking will be for free while others will have to pay Re 1 for the slot of eight to 10 hours. The monthly pass will be for Rs 20. Contractors have also been asked to display rates for bicycle parking at parking sites and earmark space for cycle parking However, night parking will not be allowed. As per parking norms, parking is permissible one hour before the arrival of first revenue train and one hour after the last revenue train. The necessary arrangements of making parking stands will be completed within the next two months. At present, parking is available at all Metro stations on Line I. The stations where parking is not there include Vidhan Sabha, Civil Lines, Chandani chowk, Chawari Bazar, New Delhi, Rajiv Chowk (2 Stations), CTST (DMRC own parking) on Line 2. On Line 3, Mandi House, Barakhamba, Jhandewalan, Karol Bagh, Rajendra Place, Ramesh Nagar, Kirti Nagar, Patel Nagar and Dwarka Sector13 do not have parking facilities. Stations that have maximum parking are Shahdara, Welcome, Seelampur, Vishwavidalaya, Janakpuri West, Uttam Nagar (East) and Dwarka Mor. |

Three women found dead
New Delhi, September 21 Former nurse Darshana, 45, was found dead at her residence in Baljeet Nagar yesterday. Her neighbours found her with head injuries at her residence and took her to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, a senior police official said. This is the fourth incident in the area, where women were attacked on the head with a blunt object, in one month. Out of the four women attacked, three have lost their lives. Two women were found dead with head injuries on August 8 and 10. Residents said that last year there were similar attacks on women and they feared that a psychopath killer might be on the prowl. The official said that in some cases, the victims refused to register complaints. There was no evidence to suggest that a psychopath was targeting women in the area, he added. Chandrakant Jha, who created a terror by allegedly going on a killing spree claiming five lives and dumping the dead bodies in front of the Tihar Jail, was arrested in May, this year. |

No uplink for Malayalam TV channel
New Delhi, September 21 The decision was taken after the home ministry did not give security clearance to the channel, promoted by the Catholic Church of Kerala. “The channel had made a fresh application to conform to the revised guidelines, but failed to get security clearance,” the information and broadcasting ministry said here today. The ministry said that all DTH service providers and cable operators had been instructed not to carry the channel on their DTH/cable network. The channel had applied for uplinking permission in 2002 under the guidelines prevalent at that time. However, after the government promulgated separate guidelines for news and current affairs channels in November 2005, Jeevan Telecasting Corporation Ltd was asked to apply for a fresh permission, as it was also carrying news and current affairs programmes. When the government promulgated separate uplinking guidelines for news and current affairs, all existing channels carrying news and current affairs in their programme content were asked to conform to those guidelines. Jeevan TV became the fifth Malayalam news channel in the country, when it was granted the permission to uplink from India. Others included the regional Doordarshan Kendra, Asianet, Surya and Kairali. The channel was launched in August 2002 and was operating from a studio and uplinking centre located in Kerala’s commercial capital, Kochi. Jeevan TV started broadcasting family entertainment programmes and claimed to have blended them with moral lessons. But soon news and education shows became the staple fare of the Malayalam channel.

NCW asks police chief to cancel exam
New Delhi, September 21 NCW chairperson Girija Vyas sent this communication to the Delhi Police chief in the afternoon today after a group of students, student leaders and faculty members of almost all colleges of Delhi University called on her unannounced. Pressing for exemplary action, the group said that in the absence of identification of the accused, it makes sense to cancel the examination in which 40,000 students appeared on Sunday morning. Their contention was that an examinationis cancelled even when a paper is leaked andtherefore no leniency should be shown when the matter pertains to charges of molestation. They also demanded changing the venue of the examination centre to an area away from the women colleges. Taking suo motu cognizance of the matter, the commission had on Thursday held an emergency meeting with the city Police Commissioner, Delhi University vice-chancellor and a representative of the University Grants Commission representative. |

Noida, September 21 Bhomisa Mehra, had gone to sector 18 to deposit Rs 1.10 lakh in a bank. But due to some reason the amount could not be deposited and she was returning to her residence in sector 37 when the incident happened. She was walking back to her car from the bank when two persons on a bike snatched the purse from her and sped away. Her main grievance was that the police officers did not care to register a genuine complaint against the robbers who had allegedly looted her in broad daylight. “How could you expect such policemen to catch the criminals and gain people’s confidence”, she asked. |
