Sirsa, August 18
Officials of the CBI today served a notice on Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh at his “gufa” here, directing him to appear before the CBI Special Court, Ambala, in three cases. The cases pertain to the murder of Ranjeet Singh and journalist Ram Chander Chhatrapati and alleged rape of dera sadhvis on August 31.

The CBI team, comprising six officials from New Delhi and Chandigarh, had to wait for about an hour discussing the legal formalities with the dera management regarding serving the notice in person to the dera chief. The management was of the view that the notice be handed over to it and it would get the paper work done.

However, the management relented and took the CBI officials into the “gufa”.

The team, comprising K.S. Negi, Ram Singh and J.P. Singh from New Delhi and Rajesh Khajuria, Vijay Malhotra and Sukhwinder Singh from Chandigarh, reached here at about 11 am. It met SP Vikas Arora at his office who sent CIA inspector Varinder Singh and SHO of the Sadar police station Mauji Ram along with the team to execute the notice. The team left the dera after about 2 pm.

The notice was issued by the Ambala court acting on the three charge sheets filed by the CBI. The investigating agency has accused the dera chief of hatching a criminal conspiracy, along with his confidants, to eliminate Ranjeet Singh and Chhatrapati and for committing rape on sadhvis.

Elopement case eliciting ‘edict’
Woman takes U-turn
Our Correspondent

Fatehabad, August 18
The issue involving an alleged edict of a panchayat of Samain village in this district to “eliminate” a woman and her paramour took a new turn today with the woman backtracking on her earlier statement and accusing her paramour and two others of having kidnapped her at pistol point and raped her repeatedly.

The police has booked the youth Bholu, his brother Chain Singh and a woman Batheri under Sections 365, 376, 343, 506 and 34 of the IPC and sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.

The woman moved an application with an affidavit to the SDM Tohana in this regard.

She has alleged that Bhatheri took her to a place near the village on some pretext, where Bholu and his brother Chain Singh were waiting for them. They took her to Barwala and to New Delhi later at pistol point.

She further alleges that she was raped by the duo many times. She gave them the slip when they were under the influence of liquor.

While she was returning to her village, the police arrested her.

Earlier, the woman had alleged that she had eloped with Bholu on her own as her husband used to beat her up. She had alleged that the village panchayat had given a “fatwa” to eliminate them.

Prominent persons of the village, who attended the panchayat, had denied that any edict had been issued at the panchayat. The panchayat had ordered the excommunication of the Dalit family. However, Bholu and his brother had refused to leave the village.

Yuvraj Case
Complainant held for contempt

Gurgaon, August 18
Neelam Mahajan, who had filed an assault case against cricketer Yuvraj Singh and his mother, was today arrested for contempt of court after she charged the magistrate with “bias and improper handling” of the case.

Judicial magistrate Ranjana Agrawal ordered the police to take her into custody as she passed “contemptuous remarks” against the court’s order of adjourning the matter for November 20.

Mahajan was reportedly annoyed over the repeated adjournments in the case. She alleged the magistrate of taking sides with the cricketer.

She had even told the magistrate that she would be taking the issue with the Punjab and Haryana High Court against this “attitude” of the court.

She was, however, taken to the civil hospital as she complained of chest pain.

The counsel for Mahajan said they would be moving the court for her bail tomorrow.

Mahajan, who had filed a complaint on December 15, last year, alleged that Yuvraj Singh and his mother Shabnam Singh misbehaved with them and assaulted her son Yuvraj Siddharth when they went to attend the cricketer’s birthday party at his house here on December 12 last year. — PTI

‘Maya formula has no relevance in state’
Our Correspondent

Rewari, August 18
Newly appointed HPCC chief Phool Chand Mullana said today that the social engineering formula successfully pursued by BSP supremo Mayawati in Uttar Pradesh had no consequential significance in Haryana.

Addressing a press conference here, he said things were totally different in Haryana from what they were in Uttar Pradesh. The talk about the Dalit-Brahmin combination was something preposterous in Haryana where the Dalits were already an integral part of the Congress, which had always been working in harmonious rapport with people of all communities.

He blamed the previous governments for the shortage of power and said no power plants were set for the generation of additional power while its consumption and demand increased rapidly.

The present government was working on several power projects, the completion of which would mitigate the problem, he added.

Regarding a specific query about the activities of Bhajan Lal and his MP son Kuldeep Bishnoi which were in gross violation of party discipline, Mullana said while the HPCC was not empowered for it, the AICC was the competent authority to initiate action against such violations.

Later, Mullana and HPCC working president Kuldeep Sharma were given a rousing reception by party activists at a special  function.
