Haryana Power Dept defends agreement
Chandigarh, May 27 Mr Sampat Singh, INLD leader and former Haryana Finance Minister, had questioned the deal struck by the state government. The government statement today did not name Mr Sampat Singh, even though it was obvious that it was in response to his allegations. The Power Department spokesman said the demand in the state had been growing by up to 15 per cent annually. The past governments did not anticipate this demand increase. This resulted in power shortage in the crop seasons and summer. Due to shortfall in the grid, substantial overdrawing from the latter was also not possible. Last year Haryana had purchased power by even paying Rs 5.90 per unit, he said. The figures given in a section of the Press (by Mr Sampat Singh), quoting lower rates for power received by the state from various sources were incorrect, the spokesman said. He added that the proposal would have to be approved by the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC). |

Political Adviser has a dig at INLD
Chandigarh, May 27 Addressing a press conference here today, Mr Varinder said the INLD protest against the CBI investigation into Mr Om Prakash Chautala’s wealth was tantamount to saying that there was nothing wrong in the corruption indulged into by Mr Chautala and his family. He said the INLD’s stance appeared to be that a law should be enacted to allow graft money as legitimate income. “ Let the INLD propose the law and see how people react to it,” he added. Mr Varinder, who was accompanied by the Chief Minister’s Media Adviser, Mr Sundarpal Singh, said the INLD was resorting to protests only on matters having a bearing on the Chautala family. The protest against the CBI investigation was preceded by a protest against the state government’s decision to restore the old name of Panipat thermal plant by removing late Mr Devi Lal’s name from it. On the criticism by the INLD against land acquisition for the Reliance Group for setting up a SEZ, Mr Varinder said the amount paid by the previous government for compensating land owners was much less. |
