Quota row: private doctors strike work
Panipat, May 20 Private medical professionals suspended their work and protested against the caste-based reservation. Under the banner of Panipat chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the medicos gathered at the Skylark rest house on the GT Road and held a meeting for the future action. Talking to this correspondent, the president of the Panipat chapter of the IMA, Dr S.N. Gupta, claimed that the token strike was successful. He said the private doctors in the town suspended all emergency and OPD services. Dr Gupta said the political parties were playing with the sentiments of public. He stressed the need to develop a national level thought to end the problem of caste-based reservation. He further added that a delegation of doctors submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner. Enquiries by The Tribune revealed that at numerous private clinics, the doctors had displayed notices on the main entrance about the closure of the clinic and urged the patients to approach the Civil Hospital. IMA sources claimed that only OPDs were closed and the doctors treated the patients admitted to various private nursing homes. Talking to The Tribune, sources in the local Civil Hospital admitted that the hospital had failed to meet the sudden increase in the rush of patients. They said the strike by the private doctors on the weekend was strategic as it was considered a lean day in routine by the government medical hospital. There were only two women Medical Officers and a SMO on duty at the Civil Hospital. Rohtak: Students of the local PGIMS protested against the reservation proposal here today and formed a human chain of 4.5 km from the Medical Morh to the Railway Road. Students of many local schools and colleges joined them. The protesters began forming the chain around 7.30 am. Once the chain was completed they started moving towards the Ambedkar Chowk in the centre of the town from both ends of the chain. Traffic was disrupted for sometime as they staged a demonstration at the chowk. Later, the Deputy Commissioner sent the Additional Deputy Commissioner to collect their memorandum, but the students refused to hand it over to him. Later, the Deputy Commissioner himself collected it and the protesters dispersed. Meanwhile, a group of 20 students continued their chain hunger strike. |

Satellite phones for top police officers
Chandigarh, May 20 The Haryana State Telephone Board, under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary, Mr Prem Prashant, yesterday approved a proposal of the Home Department to purchase eight satellite phones for senior officers of the Police Department. The official version for purchasing the phones is that natural calamities like earthquakes, storms and floods and manmade disasters such as wars disrupt the telephone lines. Senior police officers needed to have satellite phones to coordinate the activities of the police force in such situations. The phones, which will be purchased through
HARTRON, are estimated to cost Rs 85,000 each. In addition, Rs 20,000 is estimated to be spent on activating each set. The recurring expenditure on the phones is also quite high. It is learnt that the satellite phones will be provided to the DGP, the ADGP (Crime and Law and Order), the ADGP (Headquarters), the ADGP (CID) and the IGPs of the four police ranges of Ambala, Rohtak, Hisar and Gurgaon. The telephone board also approved a proposal to provide mobile phones to police officers of the rank of IGP and above.
