Ancient bricks found

Kurukshetra, May 14
Big-sized bricks, dating back 2000 years to 4500 years, have been found at Brahamsar Teeratha, 40 km from this city in Haryana.

The bricks one of them measuring 70x47x10 cm, were discovered during de-silting the Brahamsar Teeratha in Thana village, Dr Chander Pal Singh Tanwar of the Haryana Archaeology Department said.

Claiming these to be the ‘’biggest old bricks’’ ever found in India, Dr Tanwar said these might have been used for the ghats of the Brahamsar tank spread in 115 acres even today.

Two other bricks, excavated during de-silting, measured 32x21x10 cm and 28x22x7 cm.

These bricks, he said, were estimated to be as old as 2000 years to 4500 years.

He said the bricks belonged to the Kushan age and ranged up to the Rajput period going by their size. Such bricks had not been found in any part of the country, so far.

These bricks might have been used in the construction of the Prachi Ghat of the Brahamsar Teeratha which must be having as big and wide ghats as were in Kashi (Varanasi), he added.

The Thana village is situated on a mound, measuring 20 feet, with Brahamsar Teeratha on its Western-Southern side. The Teeratha has a temple belonging to later medieval period on the eastern side and has Ghats both for men and women.

At present, 12 tractors and other machinery are at work in the tank to desilt the sand and it was during this process that the villagers found the bricks. — UNI

Prisoners encouraged to reform themselves
Our Correspondent

Ambala, May 14
The Haryana Legal Service Authority is working on the possibility of granting concession in imprisonment to the prisoners who are willing to join the mainstream by changing their criminal behaviour.

A Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Mr Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel, while inaugurating a religious programme at Ambala Central Jail today, said if there was a provision in law to punish the persons involved in illegal activities, there were ways where the accused could work for the welfare of the society by reforming themselves.

He said sufficient provisions were available in the law to protect the rights of the prisoners. They could even take legal assistance against any exploitations in the jail.

He asked the prisoners to forget their past and make every possible attempt to be a good citizen in future.

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr J.P. Kaushik, said nobody was born criminal. The polluted and corrupt atmosphere of our society forced the innocent to indulge in antisocial activities.

He said social and religious programmes should be organised on the jail premises so that the prisoners could learn the moral values of the life.

Swami Giyananand Ji Maharaj and the Superintendent, Jail, Mr S.P.S. Chauhan, also spoke on the occasion.

The District and Sessions Judge, Mr R.C. Gupta, and the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ms Kanchan Mahee, were also present.
