Commuters inconvenienced as strike enters second day
Hisar, May 5 A
Volvo bus left for Chandigarh amidst tight security. A large number of
local residents and commuters were inconvenienced and many of them were
forced to travel in private commercial vehicles, operators of which had
yet another field day. Efforts were on to defuse the situation, but no
breakthrough was achieved. CITU national secretary and Rajya Sabha
member Tapan Sen visited the employees who were injured in the lathi
charge yesterday. He said the issue would be raised in Parliament. He
demanded that the plying of Volvo buses be stopped and the agreement in
this regard be examined. He said 23,000 roadways employees were on
strike. Members of various unions continued their protest at the local
bus stand and the atmosphere was tense. Depot General Manager Bhal
Singh Bishnoi said efforts were on to convince employees to resume
service. The police booked 22 employees who were protesting against the
plying of Volvo buses yesterday. Three of them were undergoing
treatment at the local Civil Hospital and 19 others were sent to
judicial custody for 14 days. Bhiwani MP Kuldeep Bishnoi demanded
action against those responsible for the lathi charge. Jhajjar: With
the strike by Haryana Roadways employees entering the second day,
hundreds of commuters had a harrowing time reaching their destinations
on Friday. All bus services remained suspended for the second
day. Members of the Haryana Roadways Workers Union, led by its district
president Virender Dhankar, observed a complete strike and raised
anti-government slogans. Chandigarh: The strike by employees of Haryana
Roadways has only partially affected the services of the Transport
Department in the state, claimed an official release issued here on
Friday. Six depots, Chandigarh, Ambala, Sonepat, Jind, Rewari and
Narnaul, had normal operations, the release said and added that the
Panipat, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jhajjar, Yamunanagar and Gurgaon
depots were affected by the strike. The state exchequer had suffered a
loss of Rs 1.5 crore since the beginning of the strike, the release said
and added that even the West Bengal government had started Volvo buses
under the franchise scheme. The release asked why the same unions, which
were protesting against running of the Volvo buses in Haryana, were
silent about West Bengal. He said over 50,000 passengers had already
travelled by the Volvo service on the Chandigarh-Delhi route. The effort
is to extend the services to the interior of the state and cover the
districts such as Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Rohtak and
Jhajjar. While the unions had no objection to the running of the
service on the GT Road, why they were objecting to the extension of this
service to the interiors of Haryana, the release said. REWARI: The
“chakka jam” agitation by employees of Haryana Roadways continued
for the second day here today. The protesting employees staged
demonstration and dharna and raised slogans against the Transport
Minister as well as the state government. Meanwhile, justifying the
agitation, the employees’ unions of the Excise and Taxation
Department, the Rewari unit of the DHBVN and the Public Health
Department here extended their support to them today. Mr Vinod Yadav,
president of the Haryana Roadways Workers Union said the strike would
continue until the arrested employees were released, cases against them
withdrawn unconditionally and the plying of Volvo buses was stopped
permanently. |

‘CBI raids on Chautalas: Cong settling political
scores’
Panipat, May 5 This
noon, Mr Kadiyan rubbished media reports that the CBI raided residence
of an INLD supporter at Panipat on Thursday. He charged the Congress
party leadership with settling political scores with Chautalas. Mr
Kadiyan termed CBI raids as a deep-rooted conspiracy to malign Chautalas.
He said the Hooda government at the behest of the Centre was implicating
the former CM and his family in fabricated cases. Criticising the role
of the CBI, he said the agency was playing into the hands of the
Congress. On the CBI’s claim about the seizure of records of the
property worth over Rs 1400 crore, he said the figures were
exaggerated. Questioning the valuation of the property, he said prices
had multiplied over the years when the Chautala and his family purchased
the property. He said the party would launch a statewide agitation after
a meeting to be held at Sirsa. The ex-Speaker said Mr Chautala would be
back from the USA within two months after recovery from operation. |
