Rajiv Gandhi a votary of clean politics: Hooda
Tribune News Service

Ambala, May 21
Paying tributes to the late Mr Rajiv Gandhi, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said here today that if in the coming few years India emerges as the second or third largest economic power in the world, only one person deserved the credit for it, Mr Rajiv Gandhi, who laid the foundation for taking the country to the 21st century.

Mr Hooda, who was addressing a largely-attended public meeting organised in New Grain Market of Ambala city, said Mr Gandhi was killed on this day 15 years ago by terrorists because he enjoyed the status of an international leader, who wanted peace in the region. He was a votary of clean politics and waged a relentless war against power brokers. It was his commitment to clean politics that resulted in the formation of an anti-defection law, putting breaks on misplaced ambitions of unscrupulous and unprincipled politicians.

It was due to his firm faith in the youth that Mr Gandhi was instrumental in lowering the voting age to 18 years. Today India had the largest population of youth voters in the world. Similarly, it was Mr Gandhi who first made provision of reservation for women in elected bodies by keeping one-third seats in Panchayati Raj institutions for them.

Claiming that Mr Gandhi had a soft corner for Haryana because the state came into existence when his mother was the Prime Minister, Mr Hooda said if Haryana was to get its due share in the river waters through the SYL canal, it was because the Supreme Court had based its judgement on the canal in favour of the state on the Rajiv-Longowal accord.

Amidst loud cheering, Mr Hooda announced several schemes for Ambala city, including a special economic zone (SEZ), a Rajiv Gandhi sports stadium, two sewerage schemes, drainage scheme and opening of a technical institution. He said the “biggest gift” for the people of Ambala were Power Minister Vinod Sharma and Union Minister Selja,” who were MLA and MP from here, respectively.

Recalling the contribution of Ambala in the freedom struggle, the working president of the Haryana Congress, Dr Ram Prakash, said the party would celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first war of independence of 1857 in Ambala in a big way. It would also install statues of Mr Gandhi at all those places visited by him in the state during his 1991 election campaign.

Mr Venod Sharma, who was primarily responsible for today’s show, said Mr Gandhi was a great visionary. He was the first to talk about India in the 21st century. Mr Nirmal Singh, MLA from Naggal, the neighbouring constituency, appreciated Mr Sharma for being able to mobilise people to attend the rally in such big numbers though Ambala city was an urban constituency.

Among others who spoke were Education Minister Phool Chand Mullana, Agriculture Minister H.S. Chatha, Health Minister Kartari Devi and Mr D.K. Bansal, MLA from Ambala cantonment.

Pak flags at school function, probe ordered
Tribune News Service

Kurukshetra, May 21
Putting up of identical Pakistan’s national flags at a school function here on Saturday that was attended by working President of the Haryana Congress Dr Ram Prakash has generated a controversy.

Though the district administration has marked an inquiry in the flag incident, Dr Ram Prakash, who was the chief guest, has held the school responsible for mismanagement if any. The police has registered no case.

According to reports, Janata School on the Jhansa Road, Kurukshetra organised a function on Saturday to honour the state Congress working president.

Sources said during the function the school management noticed identical flags of Pakistan and removed them. There were five similar flags in a row provided by the Municipal Council here.

DSP Ram Chander Rathi told The Tribune statements of school management’s officials and others had been recorded. On the identical Pak flags, he said probably the flags were made from cloth offered at the mazar of Naugaja Pir.

He hinted that role of the BDO would be probed for the alleged incident. The DSP added that the case seemed to be of mistaken identity as the colour scheme between the Pak flag and the flags in question varied from each other.

Deputy Commissioner, T.K. Sharma, said an inquiry had been marked in the case, which would be completed in two three days. He also confirmed that the flags were reportedly procured and supplied by the MC here.

However, he said there were no such directions to the MC to ensure if the flags or other welcome materials to be used in the functions were carefully checked to avoid any mischief.

Dr Ram Prakash said though he had attended the function but claimed that he was unaware of the incident till evening. The senior Congress leader said that he had contacted the school management and informed that the MC office provided the flags.

He clarified the Congress party had nothing to do with the organising of the function and it was the responsibility of the school management.

Tribune News Service

Karnal, May 21
Come summer vacation, theft incidents increase manifold as compared to other months. Thanks to residents who leave their houses unoccupied during vacation without taking necessary preventive measures.

Keeping in view the increased incidents of burglary and theft during vacations, the district police has asked the residents of Karnal to beware of thieves during this period and to take precautionary measures to prevent theft in their unoccupied houses.

The SP, Mr Sibash Kaviraj, says that the residents can play an important role in reducing theft incidents by taking a few steps. They should inform the police station concerned and the president of the respective Residents Welfare Society before leaving the house so that the beat staff of the police and the office-bearers of the society can keep a close watch on unoccupied houses.

Mr Kaviraj said the residents must ask the newspaper hawker to discontinue the supply of newspaper before going out for vacation.

If suspected persons found a heap of newspapers in the veranda, it would indicate that the family was out.

Patrolling in different localities of the city would be increased during vacation to minimise theft incidents, he added.
