Dharna against police inaction in assault case

Rich tributes paid to Rajiv Gandhi
Ludhiana, May 21
Glowing tributes were paid to Rajiv Gandhi, a former Prime Minister on his sixteenth death anniversary here today. The main function was organised by the District Congress Committee, Ludhiana (urban) at Guru Nanak Bhavan. It was attended by the Pradesh Congress Committee, president, Mr Shamsher Singh Dullo, Education Minister, Harnam Dass Johar, Rakesh Pandey, Surinder Dawer, Tej Parkash Singh, Milkiat Singh Dakha, Jagmohan Sharma and others.

Police fails to trace undertrial
Mandi Ahmedgarh, May 21
The police is till groping in the dark to trace Gurbaksh Singh, who escaped from police custody after drugging two cops on way to Ludhiana from Barnala on Friday.The police is still undecided on registering a case under Sections 223 and 223 of the IPC against the erring cops for dereliction in duty. It is also in a fix in which police station to register the case. Meanwhile, the Central Jail authorities pointed out that the police had been ignoring their warnings about possibilities of such incident. The Barnala police that was supposed to register a case on the basis of statements of constables Kulbir Singh and Ram Lal by the Sudhar police has returned the case, claiming that there buses plying between Barnala and Ludhiana do not stop at Sanghera village as stated by the erring cops.

CM’s intervention to be sought on bypass issue

Leaders of various local social and political organisations and of surrounding villages resolved to seek the intervention of Chief Minister Punjab to get the proposed bypass at Pohir village on the Ludhiana-Malerkotla road reviewed.

Govt adopting double standards, says Garcha
Mandi Ahmedgarh, May 21
Mr Jagdish Singh Garcha,a SAD leader and MLA from Kilaraipur has accused the state government of adopting undemocratic means to support Congress leaders who had been rejected by the voters of the constituency but were distributing grants supposed to be disbursed and utilised under the supervision of the elected representatives of the Assembly.

Attempt to burgle bank
Khamano, May 21
An attempt was made to burgle the branch of Cooperative Bank at Bhari near here. According to information, burglars broke the doors of the bank. They tried to break the safe with rods but could not succeed. They decamped with two calculators and one punching machine of the bank.

DEO seeks report in club employee case
Ludhiana, May 21
The District Education Officer (DEO) has sought a report from the section officer of the private-aided schools department in a case of a teacher who was allegedly working as an accountant in Sutluj Club in violation of service rules. The case against the teacher-cum-accountant, Davinder Tandon, has been taken up on the complaint of another Sutluj Club employee, Mr Chand Mohammad.

PAU to have centre of excellence
Ludhiana, May21
Punjab Agricultural University proposes to set up a centre of excellence under the special grant of Rs 100 crore provided by the Central Government in the Budget for 2006-07. These include centre of excellence in crop biotechnology and improvement centre of excellence in farm animal biotechnology, centre of excellence in food processing and value addition, centre of excellence in natural resource management, centre of excellence in bioenergy and centre of excellence in farm power and machinery/precision farming.

Khalsa college students shine in BBA exam

Ludhiana, May 21
BBA final year students of the Khalsa College of Women, Civil lines, have secured first, fourth and seventh position in Panjab University, Chandigarh. Sakshi Malhotra topped the university with 80 per cent marks. Sarika Khurana (78.32 per cent) got the fourth position, while Megha Jain (76.97 percent ) secured the seventh position.

Students to boycott exams
Ludhiana, May 21
At a meeting held by representatives of student unions of 47 engineering colleges under Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar, it was decided that all students of B.Tech would boycott examinations beginning from May 25.

Gaurav Rathi rules the pool

Gaurav Rathi of DPS, Mathura road, New Delhi, ruled the pool, bagging 50m breaststroke, 200m individual medley relay and 100m breaststroke in the All-India Inter Delhi Public Schools Swimming Championship, which conluded on the school campus in Jhammat village, Ayali Kalan, near here, on Saturday night.
