History by ‘leftists’ makes BJP see red
New Delhi, June 3 Delhi BJP chief Harsh Vardhan today accused the UPA of trying to implement books that “have been written by the leftists” and “have maligned communities and sought to introduce prejudices in the minds of the young”. Addressing the media here today, Dr Harsh Vardhan said, “Bipin Chandra in his book on Modern India has tried to undermine the struggle of the Jats against the Mughals. They have been described as plunderers.” He went on to add, “Only a few lines have been devoted to Jat King Maharaja Surajmal. They have brought back books that generated social unrest for 35 years till the NDA Government withdrew them in 2002.” He further said that the “books are trying to project a generation of Indians who lack the capability of self-rule”. Dr Vardhan said that by diluting the glorious struggle of the Sikhs, they have insulted the community. “The story of Guru Gobind Singh’s martyrdom, Guru Teg Bahadur and Banda Bahadur should have been better represented and Romila Thapar in her book, has used the name Nanak, instead of Guru Nanak Devji. Besides, Guru Arjun Dev’s martyrdom has been overlooked,” he complained. He added, “She has glorified the Mughal era as the age of magnificence and in many places the Indian martial communities have been described as terrorists.” He also alleged that in R S Shrama’s Ancient India, disparaging remarks have been used for Jain tirthankaras. Dr Harsh Vardhan also expressed unease at the mention of beef-eating in Thapar’s book. Claiming that she has no authentic source for her remarks, he said even Netaji’s struggle has not been given the attention it deserves. |
DIG, SP among 12 in police recruitment scam
Ghaziabad, June 3 The Allahabad High Court has demanded explanations from all of them. The next hearing of the case will be held in July 2005. Along with its stay order issued on May 27, in an interim order, the HC has also directed all the police officers to submit their explanations personally in the court. The UP police headquarters are understood to be arranging for the counter affidavits of these officers. SP (City) Ram Chander Yadav has left for Allahabad on Sunday on receipt of the fax message from the SSP office. The police headquarters have made a list of 11 officers, Ram Chander Yadav, ASP Bharat Singh Yadav of Ferozabad and ASP Raja Babu Singh of Moradabad. Besides, the DIG concerned has also been asked by the HQ to submit his counter affidavit before the court. The main accused – Ram Chander Yadav, a member of selection committee, who was then posted in Jhansi–had allegedly selected 100 per cent candidates from a particular caste in the quota for the backward castes and classes. Even in normal quota, the allegation is that apart from a few exceptions, members of the same caste were selected as constables. The same was the position in Mainpuri, Devariya, Gonda, Farrukhabad, and Allahabad, it is alleged.
HC stays allotment of plots in Gt Noida
Greater Noida, June 3 The scheme had been subject of a dispute as three members of Scheduled Caste had, through a writ, challenged the scheme because no reservations had been made for the members of the SCs and STs among the applicants. The High Court has ordered GNIDA not to proceed with the allotment of plots till a final verdict is pronounced by the court on the writ. The GNIDA had announced a scheme for remaining 376 plots on Divali day. The draw for 100 plots of 1,000 sq mts was held in January 2005, when a property agent was caught while going near a draw box with a chit. After this, the applicants present on the spot had created a ruckus. Greater Noida had then cancelled the draw for 376 plots before the man was apprehended. Later, these people had gone to court. In another appeal, three members of Scheduled Castes told the court that a reservation was kept for the SC members in the earlier draws, but in this scheme, the SC-ST applicants were deprived of such reservations. According to an estimate, 70 plots were to be reserved for SCs, but Greater Noida Authority had failed to make reservation in the normal category of plots. The High Court has asked Authority to explain this lapse. It has been ordered not to hold a draw till the matter is disposed of by the court. |

Power load scheme extended to June 30
Faridabad, June 3 According to the authorities concerned, the scheme has been simplified this time and the consumers were neither required to submit the traditional ‘A’ form nor produce the revised test report of the disclosed load. The consumer is asked to submit a prescribed application form available at the offices of the Nigam. The form is claimed to be very simple and has details of the total fee applicable. The form could be obtained free from the offices, source said. The Deputy Commissioner, Mrs G. Anupana, said that about 5,000 consumer of tubewells had availed this benefit during May and stated that any type of consumer (domestic non-domestic or agriculture) could take the benefit of the scheme up to June 30 to declare the ‘unauthorised’ load up to 20 KW each, for which no penalty or additional charge will be applicable. She declared that raids and special checking campaign would be launched from July 1. |
Sector rates hiked
Ghaziabad, June 3 Sector rates of all the areas, which are considered good and suitable from the residential point of view, have been increased. The minimum rates will be Rs 10,000 a sq mt, which virtually means that these rates for residential plots have been doubled. The new rates have become effective from June 1, 2005. The rentals in these localities have, however, not gone up yet. Following the rise in the value of plots and houses in the areas, how could the government lag behind in hiking rates so that its kitty also swells! First, the rates were increased in Indirapuram, and then it was the turn of Vasundra. Now buying property in these localities has become a very costly proposition.

Teachers seek time to implement new courses
New Delhi, June 3 A faction of teachers at Delhi University has been seeking more time for the implementation of these courses, which are being introduced from the session beginning July 2005. Members of the Academics for Action and Development (AAD), who are in the Academic Council and the Executive Council, today met the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof C R Babu, and asked to defer the introduction of the courses. These members alleged, “The proposed courses have been approved by the AC in haste, without the assent of the Curriculum Development Committee and the committees of courses of the various departments as well as Faculty of Science.” It was also pointed out that besides the absence of infrastructure to implement these courses, the opinion of the teachers was not sought and no workshops or refresher courses were organised. “The B.Sc. General courses have, for instance, clubbed biology with mathematics. It has made reading of mathematics compulsory, which means students of biology who have not studied mathematics in class XI and XII will fare poorly,” said the AAD members. Lack of funds to start laboratories and pay salaries for teachers who will be required to teach subjects, which are not available in a college, have not been provided for, it was further alleged. |
