The trials of admission begin...
New Delhi, May 25 The admission process for the undergraduate courses of Delhi University that begins on June 1, will be no less than a battle for seats. Over one lakh students have cleared the exams from Delhi alone and what’s more, over 1,000 of them have scored well over 90 per cent. The sheer number of students applying to the university has prompted the officials to clarify that while there may not be enough seats, there will be no dearth of application forms. Assuaging the fears that like last year, there might be a shortfall. “There will be plenty of forms, we will give only one form per person, but in special cases a single students will be allowed two forms. One ICR form allows them to apply to eight colleges and 10 courses of their choice,” said Dean Students Welfare, Prof S. K. Vig. Listing out the details of the admission process, acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof C R Babu said applications for admission to various courses in the 79 colleges of the university would be accepted from June 1 to 15. Students can either fill up separate forms brought out by the colleges or apply through the Common Pre-Admission Form (ICR) which would be available at 16 Information Centres spread across the North and South Campus of the university, he said. Forms for some colleges can also be submitted through the Internet. However, students can fill additional forms if he/she intended to have a still wider choice. Prof Babu pointed out that applications forms can be purchased and submitted at any of the 16 Information Centres. The university will, however, not entertain forms sent through post, private agencies or middlemen. The first admission list will be put up on June 25 and eligible candidates can take admission between June 27 and 29. The second and the third list will, thereafter, be displayed on June 30 and July 5, respectively. A fourth list in case of any vacancy will be notified on July 9, just days before the session starts on July 16. For those wishing to enrol themselves for the non-formal stream of education, applications for the correspondence courses offered by the University can be submitted from June 27 to October 31. It was also pointed out that the ICR forms have been made student friendly following the feedback received last year. Changes have also been made in the forms for the reserved sections and the special categories and instead of digital numbers they will have to be filled using normal numbers. |

Govt schools: Time to turn over a new leaf
New Delhi, May 25 This year the dip in the overall percentage may have been a marginal 1.38 per cent, but stakeholders are concerned about the increasing disparity between the public and the government schools. “Each year, the results of the public schools have been improving. The results of the government schools, on the other hand, have not shown much improvement. This, when millions are being spent on them each year,” complained the president of the Delhi Abhibhavak Mahasangh, Vijendra Kumar Gupta. Blaming the government for not doing enough to bring the education in their schools at par with that of the public schools, he said, “There were tall claims of computerisation that would change things. There were workshops and training sessions, but all promises and assurances have come to naught.” Mr Gupta adds, “It is not just the pass percentage that we have to consider, we have to understand that there is a very small number of students who are scoring well. A majority of those who have passed have scored a third division, which is hardly anything to feel pleased about.” However, former Deputy Director of Education P C Bose cautions against putting the blame on the administration alone. “One has to remember at all times that most of the students who come to the government-run schools are either first-generation learners or from really impoverished backgrounds. You cannot expect miracle of them.” Mr Bose adds, “One has to show patience…things improve with time. There has been a considerable improvement and there is scope for more.” |

Stolen NCR cars sold in Nepal
Noida, May 25 As a matter of fact, luxury cars stolen from different parts of the country are also being sent to Nepal “on demand”, according to reports. Some 47 stolen cars in 2003, 154 in 2004 and 201 in 2005 (till May 1, 05) are reported to have found their way into the Himalayan Kingdom. In Noida, Sector-20 police station tops with 57 stolen cars followed by Sectotr-39 police station with 33, Sector-24 police station with 29 vehicles and Sector-58 police station with 26 cars. The whole business of sending stolen cars to Nepal is being handled in very organised manner by gangs of high profile vehicle thieves in both the countries. The gangs are reportedly patronised by some smuggling dons, Maoists organizations etc. Most of these vehicles ply with red or blue lights atop. These stolen cars, according to the UP police, allowed into Nepal with a Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000 “Line” per vehicle at the border check post. The cars are allowed to cross the border “after receipt of the line” only. Payment of line is the usual system for smuggling of goods from one country into the other and vice-versa, it is learnt. The gangs, which are operating in cities near border like Kanpur, Gorakhpur, have their links on the other side of the border. These gangs usually prefer costly cars like Balero, Mahindra, Maruti Zen, Lancer, Honda City, which are normally stolen from Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and nearby NCR towns. Once these are transported to border towns, the operations are taken over by agents on the border, who ensure that vehicles cross over to Nepal. Some vehicle thieves, who were held recently from different parts of the state, have given details of these gangs and their operations. The joint teams of Delhi and Noida police are now leant to have finalised a strategy to nab the kingpins of these gangs, the police said. |

Monsoon may hit S Andaman Sea in 48 hours
New Delhi, May 25 According to the Met office, conditions have become favourable for the onset of monsoon over South Andaman Sea during the next 48 hours. The new statistical model prepared by the Meteorological Department suggests that the South West monsoon is likely to arrive in Kerala on June 7. The model, based on six parameters, has a forecast error of three days. The delay in arrival is not expected to impact the monsoon which is predicted to be near-normal with rainfall expected to be 98 per cent of the long period average. Mr B P Yadav, Director, IMD, said cross equatorial flow of winds had been observed near the South Andaman Sea with the area showing signs of cloudiness. He said there was no relation between the date of arrival of monsoon in Kerala and its subsequent performance. The monsoon could pick up speed and make up for the delay or become slower. He said the majority of statistical models suggest that El Nino (warming of equatorial Pacific waters) will be neutral in most of the monsoon period between June and August. He said last year the monsoon was 87 per cent of the normal in the country though states like Punjab and Haryana had less than normal rainfall. In Punjab, last year’s monsoon rainfall was 278 mm, which is 45 per cent less than the normal. In Haryana, it was 356 mm, which is 23 per cent less than the normal. Chandigarh, however, had 9 per cent more rainfall last year while Delhi had a deficiency of 42 per cent. Mr Yadav said monsoon normally reaches Calcutta by June 7, Bhopal by June 13, Ahmedabad by June 15, Dehradun by June 20, Ludhiana by June 26, Delhi by June 29 and Hisar by June 30. In its normal course, the monsoon hits all parts of country except West Rajasthan by July 1. It reaches West Rajasthan by July 15. The withdrawal phase starts normally from Western Rajasthan on September 1. |

The Lieutenant-Governor stressed the need of developing infrastructure to boost tourism, which he said was both a revenue-generator and job-provider for the country. ‘’The development of infrastructure is still a challenge for us,’’ he pointed out and added that the construction of budget hotels should be encouraged in the Capital and the National Capital Region so as to provide affordable accommodation to the foreign as well as domestic travellers. |
