Pusph Vihar robbery case worked out, 5 held
New Delhi, May 27 The police also claimed to have recovered three sophisticated firearms, one knife, 20 live cartridges, Rs 15,000 and other articles from their possession. The accused were identified as Subhash, alias Gohi (29), Madan (28), Pankaj, alias Santu (20), Jitender (21) and Shambhu (24), all hailing from Bihar and staying in Shakurpur area. On February 14, four persons entered the house of Anil Gupta, an insurance agent and decamped with Rs 10 lakh kept in a suitcase after tying the hands and legs of victim’s wife and two children. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Praveer Ranjan said that during investigation, the police came to know that some labourers working at the newly constructed house of Anil Gupta at Chhatarpur were missing. Immediately a team was sent to Bihar, but the suspects were not found at the raided places. The police also found out that a dacoity took place in the house of prime suspect Subhash and he went absconding after sustaining some pellet injuries. It was later revealed that the dacoity was a handiwork of some local goons who had information that Subhash had brought huge cash from Delhi. Mr Ranjan said that meanwhile the police received a secret information that Subhash and his associates would commit dacoity in A block, Vasant Kunj, and would assemble in Chattarpur Enclave. Accordingly on May 26, the police found five persons near Kishan Ghat at Mehrauli, Badarpur Road and managed to nab them after a brief exchange of fire. During interrogation, Subhash told the police that he along with his associates Afjal, Neeraj, Manoj and Rajesh had committed several robberies in Gurgaon and Okhla areas. The police have now launched a massive manhunt to trace the whereabouts of Afjal, Manoj and Ganga Ram. Mr Ranjan said that the brother-in-law of Subhash, Shambhu Singh was also arrested on charges of harbouring the criminals in Shakarpur area. |

SHO’s anticipatory bail rejected A
Delhi court today refused to entertain an anticipatory bail application by Lajpat Nagar SHO V K Malhotra for allegedly accepting a bribe. Refusing to hear the plea, Special CBI Judge Dinesh Dayal said that he did not have the jurisdiction to entertain such a petition. Citing a Delhi High Court judgement, Mr Dayal said that a special judge could not hear an application for anticipatory bail. The police had registered a case against Malhotra for allegedly conniving with Singh in the transaction. The raid was conducted on a complaint that the accused had demanded Rs 50,000 for extending official favour in a case. The complainant submitted that the amount was reduced to Rs 30,000 after

DU admission for the disabled simplified
New Delhi, May 27 Physically disabled Arjun found it hard to make it to college every day. Consequently, he could manage 50 per cent attendance only. “It is difficult for me financially and otherwise to commute to college every day,” he said. Arjun’s story might be an oft-repeated one, but this year Delhi University is trying hard to iron out such inconveniences. The university has developed special software that will help it identify colleges, more accessible to the disabled students. “This software will tell us which colleges will be more suitable to a particular student. It will calculate the distance between the place of their residence and the colleges and accordingly allocate seats,” said Joint Dean Students Welfare, Amit Bardhan. The software will also consider the student’s choice of college and course before allotting admission. “We are trying to help the disabled students as much as we can. Instead of going to various colleges for admissions, they have to submit their forms at a central point and we in turn send those to the colleges,” Mr Bardhan said. The university like the previous year will also have its own medical board to examine the candidates seeking admission in the disability quota. “While we have not had people coming with fake disability certificates, we have had people exaggerating the extent of their disability,” said a university official. He said, “Last year the medical board found that there were some students with disabilities who had claimed a greater degree of disability than they actually had. To rule out that someone with 30 per cent disability does not claim to have 60 per cent disability and thereby affect the chances of others, we conduct our own examination.” As for the colleges that are disabled-friendly, while most do not meet the required criteria including ramps, it was pointed out that disabled students find colleges on the main campus more suitable to their needs. “There are many features that a college must have for assisting the disabled like ramps and barrier-free spaces, but most colleges do not have them,” said Arjun, who was pulled up for not having the compulsory 66 per cent attendance as per the university rules. |
Hooda assures industrialists on EDC charge
Gurgaon, May 27 The entrepreneurs of Udyog Vihar, one of the prominent industrial clusters of 1,500 units, including Maruti Udyog Limited and a five-star Trident hotel, informed that Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation (HSIDC) had demanded EDC in 2002 on the plea that HUDA had asked HSIDC for EDC. A case was filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in this regard. HSIDC did not file any reply but Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) in its reply submitted that the demand of EDC was pending since 1986 and since the same was not paid by HSIDC for long, the amount increased from Rs 1,66,200 per gross acre to Rs 14,15,000 per gross acre in 2002 due to interest factor. As for the allottees of industrial plots in Udyog Vihar are concerned, the amount had already been charged by the HSIDC as part of the allotment cost, revealed Col Raj Singla, general secretary of Chamber of Industries of Udyog Vihar. Col Singla informed that most of the plots of Udyog Vihar were allotted during the period of 1976-1990 at the rate of Rs 16 to Rs 175 per square metre. Subsequently, the costs were enhanced twice at the rate of Rs 70 and Rs 185 per square metre against the meagre compensation of at the rate of Rs 14 and 56 per square metre paid to the farmers for acquiring the land. Chamber further revealed that even after 15 years of allotment of plots and full payment towards cost of land, the execution deeds are not being carried out by the HSIDC. A large number of entrepreneurs are not able to expand their business of financial institutes and banks do not provide advance finance without conveyance deed of property. Col Singla alleged that documents and clearances like occupation certificate etc., which have no relevance to plot or land cost, are demanded and a long and impractical procedure of paper clearance are adopted by the HSIDC, which ensures the denial of conveyance deeds. The general secretary had also pointed out an impractical approach of HSIDC. He said that though the plots are allotted on freehold basis, the requirement of obtaining permission before renting out and payment of exorbitant fees for it contradicts the freehold property rights. And when the entrepreneurs apply permission for it, HSIDC takes months and in most cases permissions are never given or kept pending forever, causing diversion of prospective MNCs to other states, alleged Col Singla. |
‘Shiksha’ to educate poor kids
New Delhi, May 27 Residents of the Capital have supported education of 396 children so far. The announcement of this initial contribution was made at a unique painting event featuring children from CRY projects and actress Katrina Kaif who is supporting the cause. Mr Vivek Gupta, Head- Market Strategy & Planning (MS&P), P&G India, said: “It is gratifying to see that Shiksha has already supported a year’s education of 4,021 underprivileged children with citizens across India, simply buying a large pack of Tide, Ariel, Pantene, H&S, Rejoice, Vicks VapoRub or Pampers. Shiksha will continue till June 30, and we appeal to all consumers to change more lives by supporting Shiksha, as each P&G product bought will help support one day’s education of one child”. On the occasion, Katrina Kaif added, “Schooling is the most memorable part of childhood for most of us. I remember my days as a student and how proud it felt to be tucking my bag with notebooks, completing the day’s homework etc. and the learning, which help me to succeed. It’s very unfortunate that even though education is the basic right of every child in India, there is a large section of children in the country who do not have any access to quality education. Education is the first step to building one’s confidence and shaping one’s own mind. |
Dubious firm issuing smart cards: Mukhi
New Delhi, May 27 “How did the Delhi Government allot the important work of issuing optical smart cards to the private limited company, that too at more than double the prevailing rate? The company’s financial credentials are dubious and being investigated by various agencies,” Prof Mukhi told media persons. In an earlier news conference held sometime ago, Prof Mukhi had alleged that the private firm in question had been allowed to charge Rs 370 for issue of every smart optical card for registration of vehicles while in other states Rs 69 to Rs 125 was being charged. He had gone on to allege that the company had connived with the Delhi Government and managed to get the Central Motor vehicles Rules amended for this purpose. He urged the Lieutenant-Governor to refer the matter to the CBI for a thorough investigation and that issuing of optical smart cards should either be stopped or not made compulsory pending a report by the investigating agency. |
Chip contract given after tendering only: Mehta
New Delhi, May 27 Reacting to a story in these columns, Mr Mehta said that it was also incorrect to infer that public funds were being used for this purpose as the chips would be installed at the cost of the dairy owners who were being financed for the venture and would subsequently benefit by getting fodder at subsidised prices. A number of banks and insurance companies have agreed to advance loans to the cattle owners after proper identification of the cattle. The Municipal Commissioner denied that the dairy owners were agitated about this and claimed that a majority of them were coming forward for installing microchips because of the facilities of finance and insurance arranged for them by the civic body. |
