Three cops suspended for torture, death of junk dealers
Greater Noida, March 8 The police had tortured the three and killed them later. The cops then destroyed their bodies, the relatives have alleged. A case has been filed in Kasna police station against Aloke Sharma and 10 other policemen. SSP Piyush Mordia said three junk dealers, Asif, son of Abdul Rashid, Meherban, son of Jaffer and Arshad, son of Jamir, had come from Dadri to Gama Sector of Greater Noida on September 24, 2004. They were all between 18 and 24 years. When they did not return home for five days, their relatives filed a missing report in Kasna police station about the three on October 10, 2004. But the police did not take any step to locate them. On March 1, 2005, the families of the missing junk dealers complained to the SSP Mordia that their sons had gone missing during the days when the police had launched a campaign against the junk dealers. The police had tortured the three. They were later killed and the cops then destroyed their bodies, the relatives have alleged. It is suspected that one of the junk dealers had died during police torture and the other two were killed so that the incident remained under wraps. Police Circle Officer, Greater Noida, Sarvanand Yadav was asked to probe the whole matter. The CO in his report has stated that security guard Chander Pal of Gate No. 1 of Gama-II sector had handed over the three junk dealers to the Kasna police on the fateful day for having entered the forbidden area. An SI, Attar Singh Meena, then posted in the Kasna police station, has stated that the then SO Aloke Sharma and 10 other policemen had mercilessly beaten up the three men. Later, the detained men had disappeared. Now that for five months, three young men have not returned home, their families suspect that they have been killed by the police and the evidence has been destroyed. After the CO Sarvanand Yadava’s report, an FIR under IPC 364, 330, 342, 201 and 120 has been filed against SO Aloke Sharma, Hd Constable R Sanchi Mishra, policemen Ravi Dutt, Tyagi, Kumar Pal Singh, Sanjay Singh, Safdar Khan, Parminder Singh, Karamveer Sing, Sat Prakash and Netra Pal Singh. All these cops are currently posted in different police stations of the district while Aloke Sharma is in the police lines. The SSP Mordia has constituted a committee comprising SP (rural), MP Singh, CO-I SR Yadav and CO Javer Dev Kalan Ken. DIG RK Vishwakarma had also visited Kasna police station on Monday to inquire about the crime. |

Haryana has low percentage of birth, death registration
Faridabad, March 8 He said the states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and
Maharashtra had been doing well and were nearing the cent per cent target. He said even in the neighbouring state of Punjab, it was 89.3 and 87.8 per cent respectively. In Haryana, the rate of birth and death registration was just 75.7 and 72.6 per cent respectively. The situation in the rural areas of the state was well below average and only few people could produce the birth certificate of their children at the time of admission in the school. He said as part of the measures, the authorities concerned had distributed 37 lakh certificates in the state to be given to the children at the time of their birth in the past about two years. In Faridabad district, 1.30 lakh and 2.05 lakh certificates had been given in the rural and urban areas respectively during this period. He stated that the government had made compulsory the birth certificates at the time of admission to the schools in every government and private school. The Census Commissioner also announced that the Union government would soon be providing ‘multi-purpose identity cards’ to the residents and for getting such a card, one would need a birth certificate. He said from January 1, 2005, the government had authorised the primary health centres to register the birth and death, which had earlier been done by the police stations of the area concerned. He said now all such incidents could be recorded by the authorised persons, including the Anganwadi worker, village chowkidar, multi-purpose health workers and the sarpanch of a village. He said the applicant would be required to fill up a form and submit at the health centre. He asked the district officials to create an awareness among the people, especially in the rural areas about the need and importance of the registration of births and deaths. |
HC for laws to regulate installation of colony gates
New Delhi, March 8 Rejecting the MCD’s status report in this regard, Justice S. Ravindra Bhat directed the civic body to involve all the parties concerned, preferably after seeking the opinion of RWAs, which were likely to be affected by any such decision. “It would be in the interest of transparency
that public comment is elicited, in some manner, through public notice, advertisement or notice
on the MCD website,” Justice Bhat said. The petitioner’s counsel, Ms Rekha Palli, pointed out that the status report was not in tune with the court’s August 20, 2004, order, which required the MCD to frame a policy to regulate and check “haphazard erection of entry gates” after due consultation with the Police Commissioner. The matter was adjourned to May 2 after the MCD counsel, Mr Ashok Bhasin, sought time to obtain instructions and file an appropriate response or take action on the court’s advice. The court is dealing with a PIL filed by Sarita Vihar RWA seeking direction to the MCD to frame proper guidelines for installation and manning of security gates in areas under its jurisdiction in consultation with the police and the RWAs. The PIL also sought a direction to restrain the MCD from removing the duly manned security gates in Sarita Vihar. Under Section 317 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, projections upon streets are prohibited unless the same was
done with the written permission of the MCD Commissioner. Palli submitted that security of residents should be one of the prime considerations while framing the policy. |
Expressions of freedom through films
New Delhi, March 8 A three-day film festival titled, ‘Expressions of Freedom’, is an attempt to define freedom and feminism. It shatters the myths about the bra burning aspects of feminism as it draws out and frames the hopes and aspirations of women, who are supposed to hold up half the sky and puts forth their everyday trials and travails. Through the works of women filmmakers from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Palestine, the ideas of liberation and a woman’s quest for freedom of expression are displayed and examined. If Paromita Vohra’s ‘Unlimited Girls’ asks questions about feminism in our lives and why women must lead double lives, her counterpart from Sri Lanka, Sharmini Boyle and Siyangka Nawaz, through ‘Rajeshwari’, a television series, explore situations of conflict and their impact in the lives of people. It is a story of the experiences of a woman, who was affected by the conflict in Sri Lanka. These films draw attention to issues of gender, sexuality, violence, conflict and human rights. In ‘India Cabaret’, Mira Nair focusses on the hopes and fears of female strippers in a Mumbai nightclub while respecting their pride and resilience. Striking a similarity between the lives of women separated by the boundaries of land, the film from Palestine, ‘Until When …’ by Dahn Abourahme, depicts the lives of Palestinians today. Films on socially relevant issues like the declining sex ratio, relationships, economic freedom and the different roles of women will be screened at the event, being organised at the India International Centre till March 10. |
Women’s safety still given the go-by
Faridabad, March 8 The law and order machinery was unable to provide security to them and had been taking the pending cases of crime against women rather lightly. This was observed in a special meeting organised here today to observe the day by the Sarva Karamchari Sangh, Haryana. Speaking on the occasion, Mrs Asha Sharma, a leader of the Sangh, expressed concern over the rising crime graph against women in the state and the district. She said the police had been unable to arrest even one person in connection with the alleged abduction and murder of Puja Grover, a young fashion designer, whose body was found hanging from a tree in December 2003. The police administration took the matter lightly and the case was closed, she regretted. Mrs Sharma said the incident would remain a ‘blot’ on the functioning of the police administration and it would remind the people, especially the women of the district, how safe they were in this developed society. Meena Kumari, another speaker on the occasion, said that there was no use of observing such days, unless we did not educate and make the women aware of their rights and responsibilities. She said the women would have to make efforts to meet the challenge, as the number of educated and independent women had been still few, especially in the rural areas. She said the majority of the women in the villages and towns of the state did not even know if there was anything like ‘women’s day’, as their daily routine begins and ends with the usual grind. The speakers asked the government to take measures to provide an easy justice to the women in the various spheres of life and ensure that they were not discriminated against in any matter. The participants decided to set up a district unit of the ‘Janwadi Mahila Samiti,’ here, to take up the matters of ‘injustice’ to the women. |
