Meet on sustainable city development inaugurated
New Delhi, March 3 It was over 25 years ago that the Asiad Games in 1982 gave the first fillip. Now over the next five years, Delhi and its neighbouring satellite towns have to gear up for providing all the additional facilities needed for the Games and many such efforts were already under way in the direction, he said. He was inaugurating ‘Municipalika 2005’, an exhibition-cum-conference related to sustainable city development, at the India International Trade Fair complex. Delhi itself has been witnessing a major transformation in the last few years to deal with the increasing population and traffic. The related problems of pollution of land, air and water and its impact on habitation have posed a major challenge for the Delhi Government and its agencies, he added. ‘’Having grown in the city for decades, the first visible impact has been the reduced pollution levels as a result of a number of initiatives, such as switching to green CNG fuel for all commercial vehicles and public transport.’’ The initiatives for mass rapid transit systems through the Delhi Metro is also important. The phenomenal increase in the construction of flyovers, overbridges, underpasses and pedestrian subways during the last five years have contributed to the real signs of development and easing the bottlenecks and clogging of circulation paths, Mr Walia said. Equally important initiatives have been taken for expanding the water supply, sewerage and waste management facilities, he added. Over 300 delegates comprising mayors, municipal commissioners, city managers and technology providers were participating in the event, which was the fourth international conference on ‘City Development & Management Strategies-Problems and Prospects’. This was being held co-terminus with the National Convention of Mayors and an exhibition on Public Works, Municipal Services and Urban Development. The event was being organised by Good Governance India Foundation. Mr Walia stressed on the need for such an event, saying it would help take stock of the latest emerging technologies to deal with various infrastructure facilities and, more importantly, share the best practices of initiatives taken in some of the Indian cities and also the global practices. |
