Three arrested in surrogate womb case
The Kotwali police, Garh
Mukteshwar, have taken three persons into custody in the surrogate womb case of Brij Ghat orphanage. The arrested include the victim and two men for solemnising an illegal marriage. Organiser of women orphanage Nagesh Pandit, Sonia, the woman who had been hired, and the man who had married her for Rs 72,000, Mukesh Tyagi of Sonepat, Haryana, were arrested on Sunday evening. Further investigations are on. The police learnt that the main accused of the case Mukesh Tyagi of Agwanpur (Sonepat) had again come to the orphanage and was negotiating the matter with Sonia and the organisers of the orphanage to save him from the police action. Later, the Kotwali police raided the Ashram and nabbed both the accused. It may be recalled that The Tribune on February 17, had carried a report about a Sonepat trader marrying an orphan of an
Ashram for Rs 72,000 simply for bearing him a descendant. The Kotwali police had registered a case on February 19. Nagesh Pandit, knowing all the facts, had got them married illegally for Rs 72,000. This was an illegal marriage, which was against the religious traditions also, the police said. The police are examining the role of the wives of Nagesh Pandit and Mukesh Tyagi in the whole episode. After the marriage Sonia had come back to the Ashram 45 days later, ditching Mukesh Tyagi. The protestors put up a tableau at Palika Bazar on the theme of a trader
shackled with multiple chains symbolising different taxes. “This is a unique show of our protest. Such tableaux are displayed all over the country,” said Mr Khandelwal. The traders will observe a hunger strike on March 17 at the district level preceded by ‘Rath Yatras’ in five centres across the country in the first week of March, he said. JNU students on hunger strike
New Delhi, February 21 These students are seeking the removal of Prof. Naseer Ahmed Khan as the chairperson and are demanding action against him for harassing students. “He would victimise the students by giving them low grades. Recently when more than half of the class sought revaluation of the grades, he refused to sign the documents first and then he sent the grades back, which were lower than before. Finally, when another revaluation took place, the grades increased substantially,” said Shona, joint secretary of JNUSU, who is on hunger strike today. She said, “The students have been demanding action against him and until the authorities agree to our demands, we will continue the relay fasting.”
New Delhi, February 21 While the management of the university has been claiming to be on the “job of getting an accreditation”, the students are quite worried. The apex court in its ruling had directed the universities set up under the Chattisgarh Private University Act to seek accreditation from recognised state universities. The decision was made for the benefit of the students who are pursuing their higher studies in these universities. However, both the students and the management have shown reluctance to opt for affiliation with the state universities. “We do not want to be accredited to any university…we have paid a lot of money and the least we expect is a degree from a recognised university. We cannot do with distance learning degrees,” said a student. While there are some sections who are following the management’s assurances, others are not happy. “We have been asked to be patient, because the authorities will work out something. Talks are on with some universities and hopefully we will have no problems with our degrees,” said an MBA student Vamsee Dhar. Anxiety about the affiliation apart, students are also worried that affiliating to another university will mean having major changes in the curriculum. “If we are attached to some university, which does not follow the curriculum that we have, it will lead to problems, because then they will expect us to follow their curriculum,” said another student. He explained, “The curriculum we have is pretty innovative and in sync with what the markers demand. For example, we have specialisation in International Business for MBA students, which a particular university might not have, what will then happen to the students who have opted for it and are in the middle of studying it. Which is why we want the status of university restored to Rai.” Students also claim that with various campuses located in different parts of the country, they will have to seek affiliation from various state universities, which will lead to further confusion.

HSEB may implement grading system
Faridabad, February 21 According to the secretary of the Board, Mr Rakesh Gupta, IAS, the grading system has several advantages and it is one of the measures that the Board is considering to improve the overall pattern of education and evaluation thereof. This type of system is already in use in several developed nations and has proved its utility as it reduces the burden on both the teachers as well as the students. Stating that the state of Kerala has already gone for this system, he said Haryana is among other states and the Education Boards, including the CBSE, which has been studying and evolving a manner in which it could be properly implemented. He said that although he is not in a position to tell when it would come into force, it could be year 2006 or 2007. It may be recalled that the CBSE has also announced to start grading system from the next academic session for classes like Matric and Plus Two. According to Mr Gupta, the problem of mass copying and outside interference in the annual Board exams could be checked by the grading system. He also maintained that the system of grading could also go further in improving the performance of both the students and Board as the psychological pressure on the students, which is like a terror for many, would get reduced considerably, and the students could prepare easily for the periodic tests at regular intervals, instead of facing one annual exam and a full course at one time. |

The Rs 3-crore project was approved by the Delhi government a year ago.
