Stress on ‘peace literacy’
New Delhi, February 11 “Violence invades even the sanctuary of textbook writing through words, ideas, omissions and misrepresentations that legitimise prejudices. Peace needs to be the perspective from which every aspect of education is understood and transacted,” the group pointed out. Following a two-day meeting, the members of the group said, that education needs to integrate personal empowerment with national integration and social transformation. It was pointed out that “today there is an unprecedented need to impart a peace orientation to the educational formation of students. Children are exposed to greater stimulation for violence. The prevalence of violence is increasing locally, nationally and globally. The media assaults them with an avalanche of violent images routinely. Large numbers of children experience violence at home. They could imbibe “violence literacy” in the very process of growing up. This leaves us with no option but to launch an all-out campaign to propagate “peace literacy” to counter this alarming trend. Implementing peace education nation-wide involving all stakeholders in education needs to be seen as a key strategy in this respect”. The Focus Group is concerned, however, that unless curriculum load is scaled down sensibly and teachers are empowered to be peace educators the dream of turning India into a garden of peace cannot be addressed effectively. Also, the indefensible rural-urban divide in education through which education undermines, however unwittingly, national cohesion needs to be addressed upfront. |
Many anomalies cited in voters’ list
Faridabad, February 11 The residents have rued the ‘omission’ of a large number of voters and sought enlisting of the missing names. The Citizen Welfare Association of Palwal town has submitted a memorandum to the authorities at the sub-division to seek inclusion of all the names in the voter list, whose names had been omitted recently by the survey teams. In a statement here today, the president of the association, Mr Trilok Chand Gupta, claimed that the re-organisation of the wards of the Municipal Committee at Palwal had been done in a wrong manner and many residents of the existing wards had been left out in the fresh list of the voters. Citing the example of ward number 19 (old), which has been re-formed as ward number 26, he said a large number of voters of the old ward had been unable to find their names in the list of the new ward. He said the old ward had about 2,000 voters. The new ward has about 3,000 voters, but he said there was none who could tell us the reason behind the omission of the existing voters. He said a team of the affected persons had met the SDM and the officials of the Municipal Committee, but could not get any assurance for the correction of the list. It is reported that the last date for the inclusion of new voters had been February 10. The association has now decided to approach the district and the state election authorities in this regard. At Hodal another subdivisional town, about 2,500 residents have applied for the inclusion of their names in the new list. The residents have the option of representing to the Deputy Commissioner by tomorrow, if their claim had been rejected at the sub-divisional level. |

A copy of the letter has also been sent to the Delhi Chief Minister, Ms Sheila Dikshit, and the Finance Minister. The destiny of lakhs of people engaged in trading activities is being sought to be rewritten under the proposed VAT regime, he said. Dependent entirely upon distribution business, the traders of Delhi have a “genuine fear” that in event of the VAT implementation, when tax slabs of various goods will be at par, the trade from Delhi will be transferred to other states. Mr Khandelwal wanted the government to inform the traders about the preventive steps taken to deal with the VAT law. Further, it was pointed out that in the event of trade moving out of Delhi, the government will suffer huge revenue loses, as nearly 70 per cent of the revenue comes from Sales Tax itself. |
