Lizard found in midday meal, four taken ill
New Delhi, February 4 Sonia (class II), Khushboo, Rakhi (both of class I) and Chandni (class III) were taken to the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Nangloi after they complained of giddiness and stomachache. While three of the four were said to be in stable condition, one was complaining of drowsiness till the time of filing this report. “The doctor has confirmed food poisoning and all the four children have been kept under observation,” said Advocate Ashok Aggarwal, of the Social Jurists. He said that the rice had been brought in two barrels to the school and distributed to the children. “The headmaster and one of the teachers were absent, the rest of the teachers went their way once the meal was distributed and no one checked the meal, which comprised no vegetable or lentils but just plain rice”. This is the umpteenth incident of negligence on the part of the authorities responsible for providing mid day meals to students and a violation of the law, Aggarwal said.
Resolution to close down govt offices in schools
Disclosing that the students of Municipal Primary School, Prashant Vihar, have been facing unnecessary hardships after a hall of the school had been handed over to the Rationing Department, the Leader of Opposition, Standing Committee, MCD, Mr Vijender Gupta, demanded that all the offices being run from municipal primary school buildings should be closed immediately. He moved a resolution in the meeting of the Rohini Zone Ward Committee that the Rationing Office be closed down immediately as the children and teachers were facing unnecessary disturbance.
The Chairman of the Ward
Committee, Mr Laxman Das Ahuja, seconded the resolution. Later, the Ward Committee passed the resolution unanimously with the direction that the Education Department be directed to evict the Rationing Department. Mr Gupta disclosed that a hall of Municipal Primary School, Prashant Vihar, had been taken over by the Delhi Government temporarily for making identity cards of voters. After this work was over, the hall was handed over to Rationing Department. With the functioning of Rationing Department, a large number of people visit the office and park their vehicles in the premises of the school. It all causes harassment to the students and the teachers besides causing disturbance in studies. The Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) of the area had been requested to vacate the said hall but no action had been taken so far. Therefore, the Ward Committee today passed the resolution for the vacation of this hall. Mr Gupta further informed that using buildings of municipal primary schools for office purposes is contempt of the directions of the Delhi High Court. These directions were given in 1998. |
Bull runs amok, kills 2 before being shot dead
New Delhi, February 4 The bull attacked Chand Ram and Rani near their Baldev Park houses and gored them to death, Additional DCP (East District) Ajay Chaudhary said. It also damaged some vehicles parked in the area, he said. The incident occurred in the morning when a large number of people were out of their homes for their daily chores or for going to office. The bull apparently strayed into the area and after having a free run of the roads, it lumbered into the Baldev Park area of Preet Vihar. Suddenly, it started attacking people and damaging parked cars. There was total panic in the area after the bull attacked two persons just outside their respective homes. All attempts to shoo him away by the residents failed and the bull prevented the residents from even retrieving the body of the woman by attacking anyone who even tried to get near the body. The police were informed and several teams reached the spot immediately. The area was cordoned off to check the bull from escaping or stop the residents from inadvertently straying on the scene of the rampage. The police said that after cordoning off the area, they informed the Wildlife Department and the area deputy commissioner’s office. But there was no response for over an hour even as they kept a watch on the rampaging bull. Hundreds of residents of the area came to their terraces as the bull continued to run amok. It was only when the sub-divisional magistrate reached the spot that a decision was taken to shoot down the bull. The body of the woman was subsequently retrieved. The residents of the area alleged that the menace of stray cattle had compounded recently and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was doing little to curb it. The police said that a case had been registered and further investigations were on. It was not clear what provoked the animal to go on the rampage. |

Land scam worth
Rs 75 cr in Ghaziabad
Ghaziabad, February 4 An FIR pertaining to fifth scam by land mafioso Moti Goel was registered at Sihani Gate police station in Ghaziabad on Thursday. Moti Goel is accused of having got 29 bigha land worth Rs 74.87 crore transferred to the names of his family members and relations by fraud and tampering with the government records and documents. Three other persons have also been named in the FIR besides Moti Goel. The fictitious entry in land records has since been cancelled by SDM Sadar, Rajesh Prakash. Till now, Moti Goel’s scam worth Rs 1,125 crore has come to light. In spite of colossal frauds on public land, the police have taken the cases rather casually and do not seem to be serious in arresting Moti Goel or any of the accused. SDM Sadar Rajesh Prakash said, “Moti Goel had tampered with the government record and got government land transferred to him or in the name of his relatives in Hasanpur, Bhorapur, Arthla, Prahlad Garhi, Kanawani and Makanpur villages. After these scams came to light, some people complained that Moti Goel had annexed the land in Dundaheda also. When this complaint was investigated through naib tehsildar and revenue inspector, it was found that Moti Goel had indeed got 29 bigha and 12 biswa land transferred to him and his relatives, including Ved Prakash and Kasturi Devi. The market value of this land is Rs 74.87 crore. SDM Rajesh Prakash said that he is keeping tabs on lands in all the Mahanagar villages which have a high market value.

61.39% polling in Faridabad
Faridabad, February 4 Mewla Maharajpur, the largest constituency in the state with over 3.36 lakh voters, had the least turnout with 51.35 per cent of polling. The district has a total of about 12,13,981 voters. According to the statistics available, more than five lakh voters in the district used their voters’ ID to cast their votes. A total of about 7,12,473 voters came out to the polling stations to vote. About 42 per cent of them were women. For the Faridabad Assembly seat, the overall poll percentage was 52.10, of which about 82,774 persons used their I-cards, while the rest produced other documents to prove their identity. The percentage, however, was at 60.04, which included 73,044 male and 51,553 female voters. At
Hassanpur, about 65.45 per cent voters went for polling, while 68.39 per cent voters exercised their franchise at Palwal, an important constituency in the region. As only 43 per cent of the total voters in the district used the card issued by the Election Commission, it is reported that a large number of voters could not use their cards due to glaring mistakes in them. It is learnt that in many cards there was a mistake in the ‘sex’ column while in several others, age was wrong. At Prithla village in the district, a voter claimed that the I-cards issued to many voters in the village were faulty and as a result, they had to bring other means of identification, though some others claimed that the cards were hardly checked inside the booth. Reports of ‘bogus’ polling also surfaced at various places, when the voters found that someone had already cast their votes. The election authorities replaced the presiding officers at two booths in Palwal constituency after complaints of irregularities. Hundreds of residents in various Assembly segments could not cast their votes as they found their names missing from the voters’ list. They said it was unfortunate that they could not exercise their franchise. Meanwhile, the authorities kept all the Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) under a heavy and round-the-clock security at places where the counting of votes will begin on February 27. The counting centres have been identified as Lakhani Dharamshala for Faridabad segment, Daulat Ram Khan Dharamshala for Mewla Maharajpur, Aggarwal Dharamshala for Ballabhgarh, S.D College, Palwal, for Palwal, ITI campus at Hathin for Hathin and Community Centre at Hodal for Hodal constituency respectively. |

SC seeks action plan to ease parking mess
New Delhi, February 4 Appearing for the Delhi Government, Advocate S.W.A. Quadri stated before the court that it was the prerogative of the civic bodies–Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC)–and Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to sit together and evolve a parking policy. A Bench comprising Justice Y. K. Sabharwal, Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice S. H. Kapadia, which had acted on the suggestion of the Environment and Pollution Control Authority (EPCA), took strong exception and said it was the duty of the Delhi Government to consult these agencies expeditiously. The EPCA had said chaos in parking could not be sorted out unless an integrated approach was taken by various authorities in the mixed land-use policy prevailing in the city. The court directed the government to consult all concerned and file a report within four weeks stating its action plan with regard to parking policy.
Ghazipur abattoir
The ultra-modern abattoir at Ghazipur in east Delhi would be ready for operation four months before time in March 2006, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi informed the Supreme Court, but requested it to stay its order for the interim shifting of slaughter operations there. A Bench comprising Justice N. Santosh Hegde, Justice S. B. Sinha and Justice A. K. Mathur was shown the impressive model of the hi-tech slaughterhouse even as counsel for MCD informed it that the work would be completed four months before the July 2006 deadline fixed by the apex Court. Appearing for the civic body, senior advocate Mukul Rohtagi and advocate Sanjeev Sen requested the Court to put on hold its direction for shifting of all slaughter operations from the existing Idgah abattoir within six months as it would hamper the progress of work at the new site. The Court after noticing the model observed that the Air Force, which did not have any objection to hoardes of birds flying over the dump yard at present but had objected to the modern slaughterhouse with zero discharge capability. |
DMA for SLP against ban on chemist shops in residential areas
New Delhi, February 4 ‘’We plan to put in a Special Leave Petition within a day or two against this order, which actually goes against the Master Plan of the city. It is clearly stated in the plan that chemist shops, which are a ‘use’ activity, should be allowed in residential areas.” “If hospitals and nursing homes are allowed to function from residential areas after a certain procedure then why not the chemist shops? This law will only create more hardship for the poor patients as there are about 700 chemist shops, which function out of nursing homes and hospitals while 5000 are in various residential zones,’’ Dr K. K. Aggarwal, President of the DMA, said at a press conference today. According to Dr Aggarwal, the case filed by the DDA Chemists Association and defended by the Drugs Department has only confused matters. ‘’It is wrong to define a chemist shop as a purely commercial activity. It actually falls under the ‘Use’ category of the Delhi Master Plan and this is why we will appeal to the apex court for some relief,’’ he added. |
