Timber market building owner under scanner
New Delhi, January 25 The committee will prepare the report within a given time frame and place it before the Chief Secretary, the Municipal Commissioner, Mr. Rakesh Mehta said. The building, he disclosed, was constructed in 1952; the then owner had approached the corporation for securing its approval. The officer concerned at that time refused to approve the plan but the owner managed to obtain the trade license from the MCD. It is now being ascertained which officers were responsible for issuing the license. In fact, after a preliminary inquiry, two officers have been suspended. The Municipal Commissioner also disclosed that there were four water tanks in the market, but at that ill-fated hour three of them were empty. He also admitted that because of encroachments en route the Delhi Fire Service vehicles had difficulty reaching the market. The corporation is planning to install smoke detection equipment at important sites in the national Capital to avoid such deadly incidents. Steps are being taken to dislocate the markets of hazardous goods from the congested areas. The Leader of Opposition in the Standing Committee, Mr Vijender Gupta, said that the MCD had no arrangements to meet such contingencies. The corporation had once decided to establish a disaster management department but nothing had been done so far. A number of such incidents had taken place in congested areas of Delhi, but nothing had been done to remove the encroachments. The corporation should use the NCR Planning Boards Decongestion Formula, he demanded. The Chief of Delhi Fire Service (DFS), Mr. R. C. Sharma, said that the trading license was issued by the MCD. The DFS gives fire clearance but building owners generally avoid coming to it. In the case of Kirti Nagar incident, the building owners had not taken fire clearance from the fire service, he said. |
Jal Board promises comfortable summer
New Delhi, January 25 He expects requisite supply from the Tehri Dam in April to end the potable water shortage in the national Capital. ‘’The UP government has already released 80 cusecs of raw water. Test and trial runs of pipelines as well as different components of the Sonia Vihar Treatment Plant are on and are likely to continue till March 2005,’’ the DJB Chief Executive Officer said. While addressing newsmen, he said that the plant was being built with capacities to substantially lower water losses in the treatment process. Its compact design, according to DJB officials, ensures 45 per cent saving on land, facilitates lower consumption of chemicals, faster filtration and easy maintenance. Uttar Pradesh has agreed to reserve 300 cusecs in Tehri storage to meet drinking water requirements of Delhi. In 1989, the Delhi Government had agreed to share the proportionate cost of the Tehri Dam and its subsequent maintenance. Mr Mohan said the DJB had been told that the balance 220 cusecs of the promised quantity of water would be pumped into the Sonia Vihar Plant in April. ‘’The supply from Tehri will ensure a comfortable summer, although it wont be 24-hour running tap water in Delhi homes’’ a DJB official said. ‘’But the supply will be more than sufficient.’’ The DJB has already begun a ‘’Pilot 24X7 Project’’ aimed at facilitating non-stop water supply in parts of South Delhi. ‘’It has been quite successful. But its implementation across the Capital requires a change in the entire system. A new system will have to be evolved in which residents do not store water. You do not have excessive water that can be stored both in overhead tanks and pipelines,’’ she remarked. Also, the Centre has approved a DJB request for a $ 100-million loan from the World Bank. |
GNIDA staff suspended for rigging draw
Greater Noida, January 25 A week later after the draw, Shyam Sunder and his brother Shiv Kumar of the property department have been suspended by the GNIDA Chairman Rakesh Bahadur. Defaulters held for assault on UPPC officials
Noida, January 25 Charan Singh and his brother Roop Singh of Chhalera village owe Rs 2,51,689 and Rs 1,01,466 respectively to the UP Power Corporation. The brothers had not paid up the amount in spite of recovery challans issued to them a number of times. Naib Tehsildar Sanjay Kumar said the administration decided to auction their houses as they had continued to defy the government RCs. The auction will take place on February 5. Whenever the revenue officials went to their houses to collect the dues, the brothers would threaten and insult the officials, Mr Kumar said. When Naib Tehsildar Sanjay Kumar along with Amins Mante Singh and Gyan Singh came to inspect the house of Charan Singh on Monday, the government team was assaulted. The Naib Tehsildar informed the Sector-39 police about it. A police team soon reached and arrested the duo and sent them to Tehsil jail for 14 days for assaulting the government officials on duty. |
SSI units to get ‘credit rating’ soon
Faridabad, January 25 A spokesperson of the Faridabad Small Industries Association (FSIA) announced this here. It is stated that the large industrial corporations obtain the credit rating from various bodies such as Crisil, Icra, etc. Based upon the ratings, they are able to draw fixed deposits, promote public issues and avail themselves of other finance benefits from several institutes. However, the SSIs do not get such facilities. According to the local entrepreneurs attached with the FSIA, the rating facility will not only help SSIs grow, it will also serve as the quality certification like the ISO or ISI, symbolising fiscal discipline in the units. It has been added that the NSIC will be subsidising up to 75 per cent of the costs associated with the rating services for the small units.

SSI getting a raw
deal: NEA
Noida, January 25 The Noida Authority and the UP Government do not bother about the problems and the state of industries in this town, especially the medium and small-scale industries, alleges the president of Noida Entrepreneurs Association (NEA), Mr Rakesh Katyal. The Noida Authority had been supportive of NEA in the initial years of the development of Noida. Mr Katyal said he had seen many phases of progress in Noida during the last three decades. As the interest of the authorities waned in the industries, some of the units had to relocate to other states, he added. At present, the Noida Authority is interested in developing the residential and commercial sectors. The disregard of facilities in the industrial sectors is indicative of an apathetic attitude of the officials, Mr Katyal alleged. The medium and SSI sector in Noida is being given a step-motherly treatment even though the national policy is to safeguard and promote this sector, Mr Katyal pointed out. As
far as the NEA is concerned, it has never faltered from its charted
course of protecting and promoting the small-scale industries and
espousing their cause with the government agencies. But a shift in the
government focus has increased our problems, Mr Katyal added. —

Noida land compensation
Noida, January 25 According to Additional CEO A.K. Chaturvedi, the authority will conduct a probe whether the land for which the employees had accepted compensation was hereditary or the employees had bought. If it was purchased, the employees will have to prove as to when it had been bought. The Additional CEO had sent a written communication to the Gautam Budh Nagar District Magistrate about a fortnight ago, but no reply has been received so far from the administration. Service in the authority is considered a godsend as it is a lucrative assignment and the majority of its employees are known to have made easy money. The authority, it is learnt, is trying to determine the number of its employees who have reaped rich benefits from their employment in the Noida Authority. |
