City cops go into overdrive for R-day
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 18
A week before the Republic Day celebrations, the Delhi Police has beefed up the security in and around the Capital to sanitize the area and ferret out undesirable elements.

As the threat perception is still strong, a thick blanket of security has been thrown around the city; the police has sought the assistance of para-military forces and other security personnel in protecting the Capital from terrorist infiltrators intending to disrupt the celebrations.

“We have made elaborate security arrangements and every thing is in place. We won’t take any chances as there is a serious threat from several militant organizations wanting to disrupt the parade,” said a security official.

The police have already obtained the list of VVIPs who are on the hit list of terrorists and round-the-clock security and surveillance is being provided to them. Besides, round-the-clock surveillance has been mounted at airports, railway stations and ISBTs to check the intrusion of unwanted elements.

All the district DCPs have been instructed to keep their staff alert and asked to sanitize the district for making the Republic Day parade a success. The district police have also asked their men to check guesthouses and market places and alert the public that they should inform the police if they come across any suspicious activity in their area. The Delhi Police have also alerted the police chiefs of neighbouring districts in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Punjab; the vehicles coming from across the borders would be subjected to intensive checking.

Pickets have been erected at several strategic locations inside the city and vehicles would be checked for illegal arms and ammunition.

The district police have also deployed sleuths in plainclothes to develop local intelligence and inform the police of any infringement of law and order.

The police has also sought assistance of spotters who specialize in anti-sabotage attacks. Over 100 policemen from various states would be part of the group.

One day before the Republic Day celebrations, the entire parade route would be sanitized to avoid any untoward incident.

No place to bury the dead in East Delhi
Nalini Ranjan

New Delhi, January 18
The Muslim community living in East and North-East Delhi is faced with a serious problem of finding a place for their dear ones for performing their last rites. There is no place left for new graves in the lone graveyard of this area at Welcome Colony.

According to the president of the Indian Cultural Society, Mr Ashraf Khan, the problem has become so serious that one comes across an older grave when one tries to dig for a new spot.

“Even as 10 to 12 bodies are brought here every day, there is no space for a single grave in the five acres of the graveyard. We have written to the authorities a number of times in this regard but nothing has been done so far,” he added.

The Delhi Government had earmarked a big ground at Shastri Park in the East Delhi area for the development of another graveyard to mitigate the problem about five years back.

Unfortunately, no further initiative has been taken so far, said the local MLA, Mr Mateen Ahmad.

The Welcome Colony graveyard was developed about 40 years back. Initially, it was being used jointly by the Muslim and the Hindu community for more than 15 years. Later, two separate cremation grounds have been developed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) for the Hindu community residing in this area.

However, the five lakh Muslim population residing at Seelampur, Welcome, Zafrabad, Wazirabad, Janata Colony, Brahampuri, Maujpur, Vinay Mohalla etc have no other option but to find a place for their dead at the Welcome Colony graveyard.

In many cases, the families have to trek a long distance to other graveyards, causing additional pain and discomfort to the already grieving family members.

Noida, January 18
More than a dozen people, who had procured industrial loans worth crores of rupees from the UP Finance Corporation by providing fictitious Khatauni numbers and wrong addresses, are learnt to have disappeared.

The frauds came to light when the loaners had failed to deposit instalments and the MD of UPFC, Mr Suninda Prasad, issued orders for the recovery of loans. Now the guarantors are being pressurised for recovering the loans.

Mobike medics to administer snap aid to sick
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 18
The Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals today launched a motorcycle ambulance service to provide advanced first-response care to the sick and the injured.

The service will give early medical access to victims of accidents, heart attacks, stroke, home accidents, drowning and gynecological and pediatric emergencies.

The mobility of bikes will provide for a safe and rapid response with advanced life support equipment, which will include oxygen cylinder, defibrillator, life-saving drugs and fluids.

The ability of the bikes to outmaneuver any vehicle in traffic snarls also ensures that first responder services provide the fastest response time possible to the sick or the injured.

It is designed to decrease response times for the delivery of advanced and basic level care in congested areas. These bikes will be staffed with a paramedic and an emergency medical technician.

The bike medic team will serve as an adjunct to the current ambulance system. As a first responder, the bike medic team will carry enough equipment to manage care for life-threatening emergencies while awaiting the response of a transporting ambulance. The team will be in constant communication with staff and on-site emergency personnel via two-way radios and cellular telephone. When a call for assistance is received, the bike medic team will respond and a fully staffed ambulance will be concurrently dispatched to the scene.

The Apollo Hospital will provide this free service to the citizens of Delhi staying within a radius of 10 kilometres of Apollo Hospital. The call number for this service is 1066.

The Managing Director of Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, Ms Anne Marie Moncure, said that the availability of globally recognised and recommended facility would greatly supplement the emergency healthcare infrastructure in the national Capital.

Happy days are here again for Indraprastha College
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 18
The Indraprastha College for Women is celebrating 80 years of excellence and achievement this year. A pioneer in women’s education, the college was established in 1924 at the initiative of Ms Annie Besant. To commemorate this occasion, the college is celebrating college day on January 24. The Indraprastha College for Women began in two rooms of Indraprastha School at Chhippiwara behind Jama Masjid. It shifted to its present home, which was the residence-cum-office of the then British commander-in-chief back in 1938. The Delhi Government has declared it as a Heritage building and given a grant of Rs one crore for its restoration. The restoration work, which is almost complete, has given the college a new and determined look.

The Indraprastha College for Women is the only college of Delhi University to offer a three-year honours course in mass media and mass communication. It is also the only women’s college to have a swimming pool. The history of Indraprastha is really the history of women’s higher education in north India. Quite befittingly, therefore, two of the very senior staff members have authored a book titled “Women’s Education and Politics : The women’s movement and Delhi’s Indraprastha College”.

Lieutenant Governor BL Joshi will be the chief guest on January 24. Ms Mitchell Marginson of the Australian High Commission will be the Guest of Honour. The founder principal of the college was an Australian. The college has accordingly signed a memorandum of understanding with Deakin University of Australia for an exchange of staff and students and collaborative research.

The additional director general of defence accounts, Ms Anjali Ahluwalia, will be the alumni guest. It has been a tradition of IP College to invite an old student guest on the college day function.

Industrialists getting raw deal in master plan: BJP
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 18
The BJP has said that industrialists have been given a raw deal in the draft master plan for Delhi. Its president, Dr Harsh Vardhan, said in a statement released to media today that the “fraud” on the one-odd lakh industrialists by the Union Government and the Delhi Government has become clear.

“After looking into the master plan lakhs of industrialists are angry because they do not find any future for them” Dr Harsh Vardhan said. He demanded that industrialists should be categorically told about the steps being taken by them to protect the industries from being finished.

He alleged that instead of making provision for regularising the industries running in nonconforming areas, the government has made provisions for removing lakhs of industries being run in Delhi in the new draft. “The government,” he said, “is cheating the industrialists … Where are the sites to which Delhi’s one lakh industries shall be shifted in the NCR?”

Meanwhile, the party today presented one more cheque of Rs 18 lakh to the BJP Calamity Relief Fund. The party had earlier contributed Rs 18 lakh and 80 tonnes of relief material for the victims of the tsunami disaster.
