Based on his information, three AIIMS staffers were arrested and during interrogation, the staffers disclosed that they were selling the medicines to the conduit since January 2004. Ramupal who worked in several private medicine stores near the AIIMS, came into contact with the staffers and later hatched a conspiracy to sell the hospital medicines. The conduit inturn used to sell the medicines at half the price in Uttar Pradesh and other states. The police said that the accused persons equally distribute the money earned from selling the medicines illegally in the market. The police said that further investigations were on and some more persons would be arrested in this racket.

Disabled groom held captive
Ghaziabad, January 19 A panchayat convened in the mohalla in Sahibabad decided that the bridegroom should compensate the bride family the expenses incurred during the whole ceremony. The wedding party would be allowed to go back only if a sum of Rs 3 lakh is paid by the groom family, the panchayat decided. Lokman Das’s son Mukesh Gupta had come from Nai Basti, Secunderabad in Bulandshahr, to marry the daughter of a resident of Shyma Park, Sahibabad. Instead of riding a horse, the groom had come in a horse-drawn carriage to cover up his disability. Even during the ‘garland ceremony’, the groom’s friends had supported him wholeheartedly. However, when he tripped and fell during the third phera around the fire, his legs were found to be weak, rather undeveloped. The bride family was up in arms against the fraud being committed by the family of the groom. The bride refused to accept a lame man her husband. The video film cassette covering the ceremony was snatched from the video camera man as proof by the girl’s family. Later, some senior residents of the locality decided that the wedding party be allowed to go, but the groom and his father be detained till the amount of Rs 3 lakh was paid as compensation of expenses. The groom was first shown to the bride family while he was sitting at the counter of his auto parts shop. During the engagement ceremony also, he was seated at the ceremonial dais, the girl’s family complained. |
Safdarjung mess: Notice to civic bodies
New Delhi, January 19 Hearing a Public Interest Petition (PIL), a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice B. C. Patel and Justice S. K. Kaul also issued notices to the New Delhi Municipal Committee (NDMC), Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training (DPOT) and Director General Health Services (DGHS) for not running the hospital properly. Amicus curiae Sanjeev Khanna said that various departments of the government had failed in disposing of their responsibilities in running the 1,500-bed hospital where more than 6,000 patients go for treatment everyday. The 47-acre sprawling campus was not being hygienically maintained by the CPWD, alleged Mr Khanna, who is assisting the court in the matter. He alleged that there were no sufficient doctors, nurses and para-medical staff to attend to the patients in the central government hospital. Despite repeated reminders, the government was not appointing sufficient staff, he charged. The government had allocated Rs three crore to the CPWD for its maintenance, but the department had failed to carry out its duty, he added. The government counsel, Mr Sidharth Mridul, argued that various departments were taking steps to improve the conditions in the hospital. The judges suggested whether a private agency or any other government organisation could be given the charges to upkeep the hospital. |

3-member team to probe GNIDA draw bungle
Greater Noida, January 19 The investigation in the fraud will also look at the TV recording of the event done by a local channel crew. It may be mentioned that a property dealer was nabbed with a slip containing the application number and name etc of an applicant at the venue of the draw. This had resulted in the whole exercise being dubbed as bogus. Some GNIDA officials were perceived to be in collusion with the property dealers of the area. On an average, a plot in the draw is said to carry a premium of Rs 50 lakh. No wonder, the officials and the property dealers are in the mad race to make money—by hook or by crook. Some property agents who were said to have already accepted money from the prospective buyers and also assured them of a plot, had played a key role in making the draw a farce. Some of the authority officials, eager to please their bosses sitting in Lucknow, are also suspected of having played a dubious role, making the whole exercise a mere facade. ACEO RCP Singh said since the draw on Monday had passed off in an orderly manner, the property goons and suspected officials had tried to undermine the systematic and legal process on Tuesday. This was the first time in Greater Noida’s 13 years history that the authority had to face such an embarrassing incident. A property dealer nabbed with a slip in his possession was arrested by SP (rural) MP Singh. The police had a tough job controlling the agitated plot seekers who had come to for the draw. Some people have, however, demanded that the Monday draw should also be cancelled and a computerised draw be held afresh. |
Cold spell to persist
New Delhi, January 19 The minimum temperature of 4.3 degrees celsius this morning as against the 8.6 degrees yesterday was 3 degrees celsius below normal, the weather office said. The forecast for tomorrow is mainly clear sky with mist in the morning. The minimum temperature is expected to be about 5 degrees celsius, the weather office said. The drop in the temperature this morning is attributed to heavy snowfall in Shimla and its adjoining areas yesterday. Several trains to and from the national Capital continue to run late due to foggy conditions prevailing elsewhere in the country. Flight operations were, however, smooth at the Indira Gandhi International
Airport. — TNS |
