54 Shiv Sainiks arrested on way to Mohali
Ludhiana, March 8
The police today succeeded in preventing Shiv Sainiks from reaching Mohali for protesting against the first cricket Test match between India and Pakistan by arresting 54 activist of the Shiv Sena (Bal Thackeray) near Ramgarh on the Ludhiana-Chandigarh road.

Poor response to distance education programme
Ludhiana, March 8
If the data procured by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) is any indication, then the Distance Education Programme (DEP) seems to have failed to evoke response of the public. The programme aimed at a particular section, has failed to generate response and popularity.

Fraud in Khatra Cooperative Society unearthed, 2 held 
Ludhiana, March 8
The Ludhiana Vigilance Bureau today claimed to have unearthed a fraud of Rs 1.46 lakh in the Khatra Co-operative Society Ltd. near Samrala and arrested its president and a salesman on the charges of fraudulently selling fertilisers and non-depositing of a loan amount returned by a farmer in the society account.

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Anurag Verma, today asked Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, to take necessary steps to ensure that clean and potable drinking water was made available in the Kila Mohalla area.

Broken canal bridge leads to traffic chaos

The ex-servicemen cell of the BJP has flayed the state government and the civic administration for their indifference over the broken canal bridge on Gill Road here. The bridge had caved in more than 6 months ago. As a result, the entire load of vehicular traffic had to be shifted to the adjoining single-lane bridge.

Teachers to hold protest rally
Doraha, March 8
Members of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union will participate in a protest rally in Delhi on March 10. Prof Kuldip Singh, executive committee member and Prof Parminder Singh, area secretary, Panjab University in a press release here said that the protest rally was being organised at the regional office of the UGC. The union leaders asked the unit members to reach the venue to press for their genuine and long-pending demands.

200 students examined at camp
Ludhiana, March 8
A team of doctors from Preet Hospital, led by Dr Darshan Singh, organised a free medical check up camp at New Green Valley Model School in Karnail Singh Nagar, Phase III, here today. Over 200 schoolchildren and a large number of other persons were examined for medical, orthopaedic and eye ailments. The patients were also given free medicines, besides providing them the facility of free clinical tests.

Prayers, bhajans mark Shivratri
Ludhiana, March 8
Shivratri was celebrated with religious fervour at Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women here today. The chief guest on this occasion was Mr Surjit Singh Ahluwalia, Director Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC), Patiala. The president of the managing committee of the college. Mr Swaran Singh, also took part in the celebrations. A cultural programme was presented by the students.

Khanna, March 8
The 27th annual athletics meet of the A.S. College for Women, Khanna, was held on the college campus yesterday. The chief guest Mr Jaspal Mittal, SDM Khanna, declared the meet open.
