BJP lists govt ‘failure’ in memo to Governor

Shimla, March 5
The state BJP chief, Mr Suresh Bhardwaj and other senior party leaders today submitted a memorandum to the Governor, Mr V.S. Kokje, seeking his intervention to check rampant corruption and non-performance of the Virbhadra regime.

They pointed out that there was rampant corruption and the government was shielding the ‘land mafia’ active in the state. They said several scams involving departments like Forest, PWD, IPH, Transport and urban banks had rocked the state.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister, Mr Virbhadra Singh, today said investigation in most of the corruption charges, including those against ministers in the Dhumal regime, was at the culmination stage and soon the government would take a decision on the future course of action.

Addressing a press conference here today on the completion of two years of the Congress regime, Mr Virbhadra Singh reiterated his government’s resolve to weed out corruption.”

He said some former BJP ministers were also under the scanner, but refused to divulge details.

Schoolgirl crushed under truck

Mandi, March 5
One school girl was killed and two others were seriously injured by a speeding truck at Khotinala, about 25 km from here on the Mandi-Manali national highway-21 yesterday.

According to the police, three girls were on their way back home from government school Sarti, when the speeding truck hit them and sped away towards Pandoh.

One of the girls, identified as Mamta (13), succumbed to her injuries at the zonal hospital, Mandi, while the other two —Promila and Krishna —were still reported to be serious said the doctors.

The Aut Police has registered a case under Section 279, 337 and 304 under the IPC aginst the driver of the truck (PB-10-9681) and has impounded the vehicle. “The driver fled from the spot after hitting the girls, but he was caught by the police and was arrested”, said the police.

The girls were students of class 7 at Government Middle School, Sarti, and belonged to Bhabas Devri village.

10-yr jail for possessing charas

Mr P.D. Goel, Sessions Judge, has convicted Vinod Kumar, alias Ghugi resident of Jalandhar, under Section 20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act for possessing 2 kg of charas.

Vinod Kumar has been sentenced to (10) years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
